Battle of Wits

Large Library Card Plays

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 9 Comments

Do you think there will ever be more cards that play in Battle of Wits space i.e. very large library? Its a big penalty for possibly cool effects, and digital would handle it amazingly.

I think it’s something we want to do exceedingly sparingly.I will say that average deck size in tabeltop is up almost 150% from twenty years ago. : )

Reskins and Character Accuracy

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by bassimelwakil 109 Comments

As someone who loves Universes Beyond and the Princess Bride, I can’t emphasise enough how little I want the Secret Lair drop. If you make a UB card, I want something mechanically representative, not a skin of a card that was designed for something else. I love that Battle of Wits is in there; but the rest of the lair… Vizzini has nothing to do with the character. Maybe I could get on board if he was a reskin of Atris since he makes you pick between two piles, one face up and the other face down but… Inigo is Samut?I don’t want these cards because they don’t feel like the characters they represent. I understand that people don’t want “mechanically unique universes beyond cards” but those people don’t want universes beyond cards. They want MtG canon equivalents. So doesn’t it make sense to make them unique and then make mtg versions of ones in demand?I know you’re trying to appeal to two diametrically opposed groups but for me, I’m sorry to say this is a big miss.

How do others feel about “reskins”, aka existing Magic cards reskinned for elements of another property?

Princess Bride Cards

New 27 Sep 2023 Asked by penndragon 56 Comments

Could you kindly pass a high five to the folks who worked on the Princess Bride cards? As someone who adores that movie, they did a fantastic job capturing the feel of the movie and the art is impeccable. Big fan of using Battle of Wits for Vizzini and Wesley's showdown.

Glad you enjoyed it. Here’s a link to a video of me and Nathan Holt recreating the “Battle of Wits” scene from “Princess Bride”. The scene is at the end of the video.

Evolving Brand Image

New 20 Oct 2022 Asked by eeeee-eeeeeeee 106 Comments

I was reading an old Daily MTG article ("The Magic Style Guide Part 1) and I found a quote from a 2005 style guide that I think you'll find interesting: "Magic is a head-to-head battle of wits in which two spellcasting warriors fight to the death with magic and armies of bad-ass creatures. Every card illustration should work in that context: active, aggressive, cool, wicked, “edgy.” The word “magepunk” works for us. Remember, your audience is BOYS 14 and up." Goes to show how MTG has evolved.

I remember those days. The brand team was worried Squirrels weren’t “bad-ass” enough, so I made this art description:

Likelihood of Size-of-Library-Matters Cards

Hi Mark, how likely are future cards with "size-of-library-matters" effects like battle of wits?

It’s not something I expect us to do often.

Hi Mark! My birthday question got lost in the many asks you received yesterday. What is your favorite alternative win condition card?

Probably Battle of Wits if I had to pick a single card. Poison is probably my favorite alt-win condition.

Battle of Wits Insight

New 01 May 2019 Asked by jamnikon-blog 43 Comments

Hi, can you shed some light on Battle of Wits? Why was it created, what format was it planned to see play, and how can I win with it in Commander? Thanks for all you do with the game we all love to play.

It was part of a block-long alternative win cycle (from Odyssey block). The card is one of a few alternate win cards to do well in tournaments.

Favorite Win Condition Trivia

Battle of Wits was originally part of an alternate win condition cycle that ran through Odyssey block.Happy Birthday!

Chronomancy and Zhalfir

New 12 May 2018 Asked by elemist-blog1 25 Comments

So chronomancy isn’t exile, it’s bounce, potentially into the library. Did Zhalfir get shuffled into a Battle of Wits deck?

It matters how far down in the library you put the card. Shuffled in is too far.

Birthday Trivia Gift

Yesterday (Today in your time) is my birthday. Can I get a trivia for Approach of the Second Sun or alto-wincon in general?

Odyssey block had a cycle of alternative win conditions that ran through the entire block. Battle of Wits was the blue part of the cycle. Happy Birthday!

Mill Strategy Efficiency

New 20 Apr 2017 Asked by combatdonut 38 Comments

I would argue that mill is pretty good against a battle of wits deck because it can reduce the library to below 200 cards, preventing them from winning.

Good point. The deck can still beat you conventionally though and usually a mill deck wins by milling.

Deck Size Rule Query

New 20 Apr 2017 Asked by lapalme-blog1 83 Comments

Can we please have the official rule that constructed decks must be exactly 60/15 cards total? As a humble Mill planeswalker I find it very unfair that every other "resource" is clearly defined alongside thousands of other rules... except how big your deck can be?! R&D play-testing is done with 60 right? And if a player attempts to mill a card from an empty library it should be a loss immediately. Burn doesn't give you an extra upkeep to try and regain some life, and mill is hard enough as is!

That’s just something you have to deal with as a mill player. Just hope you never face a Battle of Wits deck. : )

Amusement Park Set Idea

New 11 Oct 2016 Asked by yeecheung 30 Comments

Any plans for say an Amusement Park style set with alot of alternate win condition cards in the set?

Odyssey had a cycle run through the block (what R&D calls a mega-cycle) of alternate win conditions. Battle of Wits is part of that mega-cycle.

Most people don’t realize that Battle of Wits is part of a cycle. The five cards were spread across the entire Odyssey block.

Alternate Win Conditions

Birthday Trivia! Anything you could give me on either my favorite card, Mage's Contest, or, if not, something on alternate win conditions. Thanks!

Not a lot of players know that we made a cycle of alt win cards in Odyssey block spread out over the three sets. Battle of Wits was the blue card in the cycle. Happy Birthday!

Deck Size Design Space

New 27 Oct 2015 Asked by abloatedtoad 42 Comments

Is there design space in "deck size matters?"

Not a lot. I am proud of the design of Battle of Wits.
