Akroma, Angel of Fury

Legendary Morph Challenges

Akroma, Angel of Fury is the only legendary card with a morph or disguise ability. Considering that morph/disguise is a way to make extra copies of legendary cards useful, is there a reason that the more recent sets have not included any with those abilities?

It allows players to accidentally turn a second one face up and destroy it, so we try not to make that happen too much.

In hindsight, would you still put Morph on Akroma, Angel of Fury?

Yes.

Akroma's Haste Trait

I don't know if I've asked this before, but it's something that's always bothered me. Why does Akroma, Angel of Wrath have haste and Akroma, Angel of Fury does not? My hypothesis is that Redkromas Morph ability is supposed to act as a psuedo-haste, but from a color pie standpoint it doesn't make much sense to me.

The original Akroma wanted a whole bunch of keywords. We decided at the time to make a special exception (which we do once in a blue moon with certain abilities) because Akroma was meant to be a very special card and the haste worked so well with the design. (For what is was worth, I wasn’t happy about it.) When we did the red Akroma we didn’t want to repeat any of the abilities (besides the flight and shifted protection) so we left haste off.

Akroma Ability Choices

Regarding Akroma, Angel of Fury, it seems a very common occurrence that players expect it to have haste and are disappointed to find out it doesn't. It's very unintuitive to most players that the white Akroma has haste while the red one does not. Why was red Akroma designed this way, and would you have changed it in hindsight?

The white version was designed first and we were trying not to copy the abilities on the red version to make it different. If we knew we were doing a white and red version, obviously we would have saved haste for red. That said, I’m not sure if I had a time machine, I’d mess with a card as well loved as Akroma.
