C19 Art Choices

New 12 Aug 2019 Asked by thewonderdoc-deactivated2020013 37 Comments

Mark I very much look forward to playing with some of the cards from C19. But one thing stuck out to me: Gerrard has the Weatherlight crew in the background of his art. Greven has Crovax and Volrath behind him. Why wasn't Vhati il-Dal also depicted behind Greven? He's one of the more memorable characters connected to him.

The artist picked the images he thought made the art look the best.

Italics in Card Titles

New 29 Apr 2016 Asked by bladecassandra 41 Comments

Any chance to see another card with an italicized name, Like Sarpadian Empires, Vol. VII? Or was it a one-time stunt to use a flavor text as card title?

In Tempest block, we visited the plane of Rath. There were three kinds of creatures, the Kor, the Vec and the Dal. If you belonged to one of them and were accepted by the group you were “en-” that group (for example the Oracle en-Vec). If you were ostracized by then, you were “il-” that group (for example Vhati il-Dal). The “en-” and “il-” were always italicized, even in card titles.

Codename References

New 22 Nov 2015 Asked by commandtower-solring-go-deactiv 16 Comments

The code names that you give to sets before they are spoiled, do they tend to manifest themselves in the set? For example, Khans block was code named Huey, Dewey and Louie. Where those names references in the set?

We used to do that back in the day (Vhati il-Dal was a reference to Tempest’s codename Bogavhati) but we don’t do it any more.

Tempest Card Interaction

New 03 Oct 2015 Asked by turkeysloth 19 Comments

I'd have asked about Tempest's three card interaction between Greven and Vhati in the notes of the question because I haven't played that set, but I've only been using this account for a week or so (formerly firesportsman121). I know I won't have the full context, but what's the flavor text in question?

I kind person has linked to the three cards in Gatherer. (Vhati il-Dal, Repentance, Diabolical Edict, all the Tempest version).

Evolve Mechanic Explanation

New 24 Dec 2012 Asked by tnessfftto 12 Comments

Only one non-Gatecrash card uses the phrase "power or toughness" (Vhati il-Dal); usually you opt for one or the other. What motivated the slightly more complex version of evolve that looks at both?

Now’s the time to plug my column next week as Gatecrash previews begin. I will answer that question next Monday. Yeah, you all figured out I’m talking about Simic next Monday.
