Suggestion for Universes Beyond

New 28 Jul 2024 Asked by tumblacct 6 Comments

Just FYI my wife (the one who once called you "the Taylor Swift of game design") is requesting a "Court of Thorns and Roses" Universes Beyond. She says lots of women would play. I'm just the messenger!

I’ll pass it along. It’s the first time I’ve been compared to Taylor Swift. : )

Supplemental Sets and Popularity

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by davidemsa 9 Comments

Does the popularity of Universes Beyond and Horizons sets raising the bar for supplemental sets make you less likely to try new kinds of supplemental sets?

Yes. That said, I do think we’re exploring new means to get out experimental types of play experiences.

Set Progress Timeline

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by neverusingthisaccount7 3 Comments

Out of all the sets you’re working on right now, which is the farthest along in the timeline? Alternatively, what’s the distance between vision design and release date?

Cairo is the in-universe Magic set that is the farthest out. It’s in vision design. I start exploratory design on a Universes Beyond set in August. The end of vision design to print is two to three years. In-universe Magic sets are closer to release than Universe Beyond ones when they come out of vision design.

Rangers as Universes Beyond

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by consequencenotwithstanding 13 Comments

Hey Mark! My partner had asked me if MMPR would be capable of becoming a Universes Beyond set, and given that I know nothing about how or why you can/can't work with certain properties to make products, I thought I'd ask you.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are capable of becoming a Universes Beyond.

In-Universe Commander Deck Chances

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 3 Comments

What are the chances of getting some (i wouldn't want it to be all of them by any means, but some) in-universe commander precons that go all-in on theme and flavor like Universes Beyond precons do, where everything has an appropriate name and gets new art if it doesn't already fit? Something like that for, say, the guilds seems really fun

I won’t say it won’t or can’t happen, but I don ’t expect it to be something we do often with in-universe Commander decks.

Future of Universes Beyond Franchise

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by silverhawkpx45 0 Comments

Hey Mark, I've been wondering: Looking at the success of Universes Beyond, how likely are returns to the same franchises? Warhammer 40k only featured a subset of factions, for instance, so there's potential for more cards. I'm curious if this is something that's been explicitly considered by market research and how heavily recurring IP collaborations are weighed vs new IP collaborations?

Basically, looking back, how do you decide if the well has run dry when UB seems to set sales records every time?

Going back to popular properties is not out of bounds. We did a second D&D set, for example.

Raising Bar for Supplemental Sets

New 20 Jul 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 12 Comments

"Why has the bar for supplemental sets gotten higher? Is it universes beyond?Universes Beyond and Modern Horizons are the biggest two causes." That really sucks, a lot of us really looked forward to the summer supplemental sets because of how fun they were, 2 headed giant draft and conspiracy immediately come to mind.

The bar gets raised because new products do well. More players play them, more players buy them, and more players rank them higher in market research. It’s not some diabolical plot. It’s the game evolving towards what the players are most enjoying.

Supplemental Sets Bar Rising Cause

Universes Beyond and Modern Horizons are the biggest two causes.

Universes Beyond Cube Development

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by rockon101000 5 Comments

To the Mark asking about cubes - I am working on my first cube, a Universes Beyond cube. I like how many of these cards that were not designed to be drafted are recontextualized by the draft environment. Currently, the pool of cards to select archetypes from is somewhat small, which is the largest drawback.

Sounds like fun. The Universes Beyond cube will get stronger, and easier to do, with time.

Lord of The Rings Feedback

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by thecurioustale 8 Comments

I have some Lord of the Rings feedback: I mostly stopped playing Magic in recent years when the official story let me down one too many times (a "lapsed" player I think you call them?), but I was really excited by the LotR set. Great execution! And the reason I thought I'd share my opinion is because I really dislike the Universes Beyond concept. I felt like Wizards was moving in a direction that I couldn't follow. But when I saw the LotR set it finally clicked for me why Wizards is doing it.

It’s not until you see a property that you really love done as Magic cards do you truly get the draw of Universes Beyond.

Sales Trend and Future Strategy

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by dissociativehusky 7 Comments

I have a sales question. LOTR, I believe, is the best selling set of all time, right? And if I recall, the best selling commander set of all time is Fallout, behind that being Warhammer. Goes to imply the Marvel sets will likely be the next highest selling sets of all time, if not just behind LOTR. My question is, doesn't this show WOTC should mostly just pivot to UB as the new 'standard' with old planes as the less visited product?

While will continue to do Universes Beyond as there is an obvious audience, but the Magic in-universe sets (which we call “MIP sets”) also serve an important function. There are a lot of fans who love Magic’s IP, and having sets that we have don’t have to interface with outside partners has a lot of advantages.

Spiderman's Colors and Marvel Partnership

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by winteristhebestship 8 Comments

What colors would Spiderman be? I'm curious. (Also please convince Disney to do a Marvel UB 🙏)

I think base Spider-Man is green/white with some blue. Also, I have some good news for you. We’ve already announced a multi-set Universes Beyond partnership with Marvel.

Sharing Appreciation For Genre Mashup

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by thesnackist 9 Comments

I feel like a lot of established MtG players underestimate how much the genre mashup and Universes Beyond sets expand to new demographics. A friend and I 100% started playing Magic because of Outlaws of Thunder Junction. We are now SUPER EXCITED for Bloomburrow and Duskmourne too. (I was exposed to Magic in college but that was a decade+ ago.)
It's not an exaggeration to say that without the cowboys set, I would not be playing Magic right now.
Anyway just wanted to share that positive message.

Thanks for the message.

Color Coding in UB Cards

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by theadonalsium 12 Comments

How much does in-universe coloring affect design of UB cards? For example, someone like Green Lantern is likely red or white due to their determination and willpower. However, their in-universe theme is very green, for obvious reasons. How do you reconcile these differences?

Green Lantern is a bad example. The character *is* green/white. (Willpower is green, not red, plus the ring chooses you.) Spider-man is a better example. He’s not blue/red. Characters in Universes Beyond don’t have to match the color of their outfit.

Marvel Card Design Query

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 4 Comments

Is marvel going to do the thing where you out the name of the attack on the card? What do you call that and is it popular? I liked its use in universes beyond properties as flavor.

They’re called flavor words. I can’t comment yet if the Marvel sets will use them.

Influence on Universes Beyond Concept

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by dusqofrakdos 8 Comments

As someone who enjoys universes beyond (though I wish more series I'm interested in have been involved) do you think regular discussion of color philosophy regarding non-mtg characters helped push the idea of doing it?

I think the constant interest in how Magic would do characters from other properties demonstrated a general interest in what Universes Beyond became.

Dibs on Marvel and Other Media

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 5 Comments

You mentioned a while back that, when Universes Beyond began, you called dibs on any hypothetical Marvel set before it had even begun. Are you allowed to tell us other media you called dibs on? (Obviously, you can't tell us whether they *are* going to happen, but ones you'd be leading if they do)

I basically called dibs on most comic book-inspired properties. : )

Universes Beyond-free Format Possibility

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by joekabox 60 Comments

Is there any possibility that wotc could make universes beyond-free format variants to formats that currently allow them, such as commander and such? My friends and I do not wish to take part in games that ruin our immersion in such a way, when it was the mild role play and "you are a planeswalker" theming that got us into the game, and it's becoming increasingly harder to avoid universes beyond cards. As it stands there isn't a way we can really avoid them at our local gaming stores, and we're getting frustrated only being able to play amongst ourselves in a game that we used to be able to play with others. Can you please give us some hope?

We did some market research to see if there was an audience for Universe Beyond-less formats. Only 7% of respondents were interested. That’s too small a group for a format we’d officially create, but many formats (Commander being the most famous) have begun as things created by the players. Something having a groundswell of support will eventually get noticed.

Feedback on Universes Beyond and Block Structure

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by wingedkidruins 30 Comments

Hi markDo you think that some of the criticisms about Universes Beyond (that dilutes to much of the flavor of the original game) and the one block structure oposed to the old 3 blocks per plane (which I heard people say that it does not give enough room to explore and get the feel of the plane) are valid? Do you think that this modern configuration is just a new way for the game to appeal to younger audiences that are more inclined to get excited about something for a short amount of time and need constant new things to keep the attention going?

The audience, through their buying habits, have expressed a strong preference for the current system over blocks. I don’t know how much of that has to do with the make-up of the playerbase.

Upcoming Universes Beyond Sets

New 05 Jul 2024 Asked by surnblack-blog 0 Comments

Besides Final Fantasy and Marvel, any date or hint for new information about new Universes Beyond sets? I'm loving every UB set so far, even if sometimes they are not for me, but there are a few games that I would love to see a partnership with Wizards, so I'm always excited to see new informations about new UB!

There are things we’re working on that haven’t been announced yet.
