Ultimate Price and Devoid

Would ultimate price hit devoid?

No, because Devoid cards are not monocolored. They have no color.

Enchantment Block Strategy

New 11 Jun 2013 Asked by gehirnsturm 13 Comments

Would you tone down targeted removal in an Enchantments-matter block to make the main drawback of Auras be of less impact? Would you consider doing something like "destroy target creature that's not enchanted" similar to how Ultimate Price / Victim of Night / Go for the Throat worked in their respective blocks?

I agree that enchantment blocks have the job of figuring out how to make auras more relevant than normal. Your solution is one possibility but there are others that would also work.

Black Removal Evolution

New 04 Mar 2013 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 3 Comments

You said: "Black creature removal has shifted away from having to have restrictions. “Just let black kill” seems to be the current motto." That doesn't seem to be the case, since of the four main black kill spells in Standard, Tragic Slip is conditional, Ultimate Price and Victim of Night are target-restricted, and only Murder just kills. What's up with that?

I didn’t say we dropped all restrictions, I just said we are pushing towards more letting black kill than we used to.

Rapid Hybridization Critique

New 05 Jan 2013 Asked by djunknown0 27 Comments

I understand that Polymorphing is in Blue's share of the pie, but I strongly disagree that Rapid Hybridization qualifies as polymorphing. This spell destroys, then creates something new; a polymorph changes the original. I could understand if it was an enchantment that turned a creature into a vanilla beast. Dreadbore is at sorcery speed and requires 2 colors of mana, but mono blue can kill Council or Lazav at instant speed for U? Mono black in RTR can't even target leaders with Ultimate Price

There is no way in current Magic rules to actually change one creature into another (well, unless the are on opposite sides of a double-faced card, then they get to transform). The language used is what has to get the job done within the rules, but the flavor is not of destruction and creation but of changing from one into the other.

Card Naming Philosophy

New 14 Sep 2012 Asked by houstofcards 11 Comments

You often talk about card names as a shrinking resource. Why are a great deal of the cards in return to ravnica eating up this space? Martial Law and Ultimate Price particularly seem to be digging into this space unnecessarily, whereas Stealer of Secrets and Fencing ace hit the nail on the head.

Note if we believe we are making a card we can reprint in the future, we don’t consider giving it a good name eating up a resource.
