New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by sienna-the-doe 11 Comments

Hey Mark! I was just curious about something very near and dear to my heart, as a Scion of the Ur-Dragon EDH player. will we see any major returns in the future for say, a Tarkir re-boot? also I HAVE to both Thank and Curse your team for the coin flip goblin archetype. it is so so silly and has been a strong archetype for so long

The set codenamed Ultimate is a return to Tarkir.

Beyond Sales Justification

New 16 Oct 2022 Asked by j-waffles 84 Comments

I think the fundamental thing about using sales as justification for UB, or secret lairs, or a new plane, is that it misses the primary factor in why things sell . Eldraine sold well not because of the flavor of the plane, but because of the power level of the cards; If that set came out and was mechanically the exact same, but it took place on Rabiah instead, I’d bet my life that sales of the set would not have been radically different. The original batch of secret lairs sold well not because people liked the concept of the product, but because they contained reprints of highly sought after cards, which is also why “OMG kitties” was one of the worst selling out of the original batch, its cards weren’t as sought after as something like the Ur-Dragon, a popular commander that had never been reprinted before that. The warhammer decks have new, powerful cards AND sought after reprints for the most popular format, so people are going to buy them. Saying “people love universes beyond! They keep selling so well!” is bothersome because it seems like you are intentionally manipulating and misinterpreting the data so that it leads to the very conclusion that you wanted from the beginning. Let me give you a hypothetical. If you made a new product with tournament legal reserved list reprints, but they had Furbies on them, that product would fly off the shelves. But to then go and say “SEE! People love Furbies!” Would be either extremely foolish or woefully disingenuous, because obviously the Furbies aren’t why it sold so well.

I apologize for shorthanding success as “there was an audience for them” which implies sales is the only metric. There is lots of other data beyond sales. Universes Beyond has proven successful in all the metrics we test. People say positive things on them in market research. They hit all the positive metrics we can observe online (things like Google trends). The various feedback we get from partners is positive. It’s not good business to make people buy something they don’t fundamentally want to buy. If we truly believe a product would be better using different flavor, we’d use different flavor. To use other people’s IP, we have to pay them, so if a Magic version would just sell better, why wouldn’t we do that? The whole reason I have a blog is to listen to what the players are saying. I want to make things you all want to buy, but different players want different things. Just because you personally don’t like an idea, doesn’t inherently mean it’s a bad idea. Often there’s an audience that does want it. Also, historically, Magic players as a whole, often take time to come around on new things. There are key parts of the game that players would scream bloody murder if we removed that players screamed bloody murder about when we added them. All this is a long way of saying, that we want players buying things because they want to buy it. Throne of Eldraine’s world tested very highly in market research. It having powerful cards didn’t hurt sales, but it doesn’t negate that players actually liked the world. It’s a big reason we’re going back next year.

Five-Color Card Trivia

New 12 Jul 2022 Asked by trifas 53 Comments

Hi, Mark! Another birthday around here. Could you share any trivia on my first commander, Scion of the Ur-Dragon, or any 5 color card?

The first five-color card, Sliver Queen, came about because we wanted a card that tied all the Slivers together, and they were all five colors, so it seemed fun and splashy to make the Sliver Queen five color. We made her legendary because Michael and I put her into the story. Happy Birthday!

Special Art for Ur-Dragon

New 08 Jan 2022 Asked by vaatiwithblue-deactivated202403 45 Comments

Today is my birthday! I was wondering if it was possible to get The Ur-Dragon and Scion of the Ur Dragon in a secret lair as full art borderless showcase cards (possibly in Foil)? Would it become a possibility if people asked for it?

I answered you on Twitter, but I’ll repeat the answer here. If enough people express desire, there’s all sorts of things Secret Lair can do.Happy Birthday!

Ur-Dragon's Nature

New 01 May 2019 Asked by jspencer93 71 Comments

No one's been able to answer this so maybe you can. How was the Ur-Dragon the source of all dragons? We know he dropped a brood on Dominaria and seems to have some type to Tarkir, and is the essence to all dragons in the multiverse. Does it travel between planes like the Eldrazi? Or is it a type of omnipresence?

I think it was just good PR. : )
I don’t know the actual answer.

Scion Type Explanation

Why don't Scion of Darkness and Scion of the Ur-Dragon have the Scion creature type?

Scion isn’t a creature type. It just means “descendant”.

Commander Damage Rules

If Scion of the Ur-Dragon transforms into another dragon such as Dragonlord Ojutai, does he deal commander damage as Scion or Ojutai?

I don’t know where to send people for Commander rules questions. Do any Question Marks know the answer?

Dragon Commander Trivia

New 24 Jul 2015 Asked by level12bard 52 Comments

Hello, MaRo! Yesterday was my birthday, could I get some belated trivia about my favorite Commander, Scion of the Ur-Dragon?

I have no idea what got us to make this card. It predates Commander being a thing (or at least a big thing) so that didn’t influence us. I guess we were just trying to make a Dragon lord that you can play with every Dragon from Magic’s past. The tutor a Dragon from your library to your graveyard and copy it sounds like the kind of thing I’d do although I have no memory of making this card. I was on the Time Spiral design team though.Happy Birthday!

Designed Dragons Query

Are there any popular dragons that you designed? I'm making Scion of the Ur-Dragon EDH and if one of the dragons I have was designed by you, I don't care what It's called, I'm renaming it Maro's Dragon

I have designed many dragons. List some of your favorites.

Dragon Lord Details

New 02 Jul 2012 Asked by themastah 7 Comments

I can't find the dragon lord. Are you sure there is one? Karrthus would probably count but he's legendary.

There’s a bunch: Bladewing the Risen, Crucible of Fire (okay, not a creature),  Dragonmaster Outcast, Dragonspeaker Shaman, Dragonstorm (okay, another noncreature), Imperial Hellkite, Kaalia of the Vast (lord to angels and demons as well), Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund, Scion of the Ur-Dragon and Zirlan of the Claw. I might have forgotten one or two.
