The Slayer

Comparing Card Types

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by tybonel13 30 Comments

Would saying that Baldur's Gate Wilderness is the same sort of "card" as Garruk the Slayer and the ones made for Theros block's Hero's Path be an accurate statement?

Yes.

Legendary Names Similarity

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by szwanger 64 Comments

What are your thoughts on having legendary characters named Rashka the Slayer and Raksha Golden Cub?

Or Kondo and Konda. When you make over 25,000 cards, it gets hard not to have names end up similar to one another.

Future Set Challenges

Will we see any more set challenges like Hero's Path or Garruk the Slayer in the future?

What did you all, that played any of them, think of them?

Green's Pop-Culture Examples

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by dienekes101 53 Comments

Mark, many of times when watching films or shows, I start thinking what MTG colors they represent. So many times I can easily attribute a character as Red, Blue, White, and/or Black, but Green is toughest for me and I attribute few to it. Does Green require (only?) association with Wisdom, Nature and the Mystical? Could you provide a pop-culture to help me? Thank you sir

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a great green-centric character. She didn’t choose to be the Slayer. For much of the show, she didn’t want to be the Slayer, but she came to embrace it as her destiny.

Buffy's Nature

New 05 Dec 2015 Asked by ajolipa 34 Comments

"Jessica's powers aren't natural. She isn't pushing for the status quo. She has no affinity for the natural order." Replace "Jessica" with "Buffy" and this remains true. (Buffy's slayer powers are not natural in origin -- the slayer line is the result of a group of powerful people deciding to infuse a young girl with demon energy to make use of her as a tool in a fight against what they think is evil, which is white, not green.) You finally made a case for Buffy not being green -- thanks!

You’re wrong. The Slayer is a role that you don’t choose but are born into. When one dies, the next is triggered. It’s a natural system. And when you’re triggered you get the natural skills to be a hunter. It’s about as Green as it gets.

Appreciating Magic Evolution

New 05 Nov 2014 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 42 Comments

I have really enjoyed the direction of magic. I started in Worldwake, and have watched the story become more integrated into the cards and have watched the game learn to manage a complex environment within NWO constraints. You have also incorporated side activities (challenge decks, Garruk the Slayer) to increase storyline engagement. Thank you and the whole WotC team!

You’re welcome. I’m glad you appreciate all our hard work.

Buffy's Color Identity

New 14 Jul 2014 Asked by one-true-chungus 17 Comments

I remember reading that you said Buffy was green, but I think that she should be red/white. She is a protector of good and doing what's right, fighting of evil. I see her as more of a protector than a hunter, And of course she often works of emotion ignoring Giles/willow/common sense.

She’s a hunter who was born into her role. She didn’t choose to become the Slayer, it was just part of who she is. Most of the show is about Buffy learning to accept her role.

Buffy's Color Identity

Buffy is green? I'd say she's more white than green, or white and red; what is it about her that makes her green?

Buffy is a hunter, not one that chose her position or powers but because she was destined to be the slayer. She’s very instinctual and actually rebels against authority. Most of Buffy’s character arc through the show was her coming to accept who she was and what her role in life was.

Character Destiny Debate

New 11 May 2013 Asked by envoyofghosts 5 Comments

You have Buffy down as a quintessential green character, but (initially at least) she tries to avoid her destiny to become the Slayer. Shouldn't a green hero(ine) accept their destiny?

She ultimately did. The conflict though was always a green one.

Favorite Buffy Episode

New 06 Mar 2012 Asked by hotfurrystuds-deactivated201812 4 Comments

What is your favorite episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Also, any chance we could see another Slayer in Magic someday? (Raksha the Slayer is a bit outdated).

I’m a big fan of “Once More With Feeling” (the musical episode) although I think Sixth Season is the worst one. “Innocence” from Season Two is also one of my favorites.
