Memorable Birthday Story

New 25 May 2024 Asked by mattstheman972 15 Comments

Happy Birthday, Mark!I know you didn't ask, but in the spirit of Birthday Trivia, let me tell you about one of my favorite Magic moments.I was playing a group hug commander deck and cast the spell Wedding Ring, targeting my boyfriend to make a copy of it (my friends accuse us of being too adorable). But my chaotic friend cast Deflecting Swat redirecting it to himself, so instead it was us who got "married".He proceeded to call me "babe" and "honey" the entire game while my boyfriend turned redder and redder. My boyfriend and I got engaged last week.Thank you for your part in making Magic and giving us so many great memories.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. As is tradition, I love hearing your Magic stories (how Magic positively impacted you) on my birthday.

Hybrid Mana Rules

Re: "What does this have to do with hybrid mana?" Evelyn, the Covetous has hybrid mana cost that can be played with {2}{B}{B}{B} without loss of functionality by not having red or blue mana available. Once on the battlefield I can cast the cards with text 'If you control a commander, you may cast this spell without paying its mana cost.' including the non-black ones. I don't need to include blue mana at all in the deck to do this. Hybrid is allowing the blue and red cards to be included.

I think you missed my point. In Commander, even if they changed the rules about how hybrid and color identity worked, Deflecting Swat and Fierce Guardianship still wouldn’t be playable in a deck with a monoblack commander.

Commander Color Pie

New 17 Dec 2023 Asked by chetskolos 33 Comments

Question about commander, color pie, and hybrid mana. I have an Evelyn, the Covetous deck that is nearly mono-black. Since the mana cost of the commander can be played with only black mana the land base is nearly all basic swamps. In the deck I also include both Deflecting Swat and Fierce Guardianship. So I have a 'black' commander deck that has access to both spell-redirection and counter-magic from off color sources without the need for non-black mana. Is this a bend, break, or as designed?

What does this have to do with hybrid mana? In most formats (although not Commander), you can play cards in your deck that you can’t cast with the mana in your deck, so the cards you’re talking about are as designed. Note Fierce Guardianship is using Commander color identity, to ensure you have access to blue.

Zero Damage Spell Potential

If/When: Spell that does 0 damage but still works with damage enhancers (pyromancer's swath et al)?

If. 0 damage isn’t damage by how the rules work.

Stack Interaction Across Colors

New 16 Sep 2022 Asked by mtgedhiction 32 Comments

Do you think other colours should be able to interact with the stack at instant speed in some form (blue being the best with the counter spell mechanic)? I.e deflecting swat, silence?

I don’t think all colors necessarily need to do that.

Request for More Redirect Effects

May I request more redirecting effects a la Deflecting Palm, Deflecting Swat, Comeuppance, et al?

It’s something we purposefully chose to dial down.
