Shadowborn Apostle Trivia

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by duckily 34 Comments

its my birthday! which means i get to ask for trivia on one of my favorite cards, shadowborn apostle?

Shadowborn Apostle started as a top-down design about a creature that summons a Demon. The idea to let you have as many in your deck as you wanted evolved out of the design. Happy Birthday!

Reception of ‘Limitless’ Creatures

New 16 Jul 2021 Asked by revenchism 39 Comments

What was the general reception of “limitless” creatures like Shadowborn Apostle and Relentless Rats?Where would you rank them on the Storm Scale?

I’d call them a 4. I’m pretty sure we’ll do more.

Basic Supertype for Creatures

New 02 Apr 2021 Asked by royalcrown5662 32 Comments

If or when: Basic supertype for creatures such as Relentless Rats and Shadowborn Apostle?

If. The Basic supertype is not what lets you play any number of a card.

Possibility of Noncreature Permanents

New 05 Aug 2020 Asked by swmystery27 40 Comments

Might we ever see a noncreature permanent with the Relentless Rats/Shadowborn Apostle text? Something like an artefact with a tiny effect?

It needs to be something where having a large number means something, but yes, it’s possible.

Silver-Border Commander Set

New 02 Feb 2020 Asked by khanshotfirst 19 Comments

re: all silver-border commander set: I support it.... as long as there's no card with the Shadowborn Apostle rule. And remember, basic lands are black-border ;^)

I’m highly skeptical a silver-border Commander deck would be all silver border. We have a lot less cards to work with.

Un-Card Possibility

Maybe. : )

Curious Killbot Oracle Text

New 19 Jan 2019 Asked by vriskerz-deactivated20190423 43 Comments

Would you ever be able to Oracle text curious killbot to have the shadowborn apostle ruling? (Any number in deck)

The reason we made four of them (Killbot variants with different names) was so you could essentially have sixteen in your deck. That’s not enough? : )

Naming a Mechanic Origin

New 11 Jan 2019 Asked by grandwarlordradha 66 Comments

Is there an internal R&D term for the Shadowborn Apostle any number ability? And do you remember who came up with the idea originally to have any number of certain cards make up your deck?

We tend to call it “Relentless” after Relentless Rats. I give credit to Richard Garfield for the mechanic as Plague Rats inspired the mechanic although it didn’t technically have it.

Deck Construction Uniqueness

New 17 Nov 2018 Asked by deatht200 52 Comments

Why is black the only color so far with "a deck can have any number of cards named". Both rats and shadowborn apostle are black, is that in the color pie of black or what?

Any color can do it, but we do it infrequently and because of Plague Rats we often do it on Rats which are black.

Deck Copy Mechanic

New 29 May 2018 Asked by rakdosfiesta 52 Comments

Is there a reason why all the creatures that allow you to have any number of copies of them in a deck are Black? Shadowborn Apostle, Relentless Rats, and now Rat Colony.

So far they have mostly been Rats which are black.

Basic Creature Limitations

New 19 Feb 2018 Asked by fan-from-the-basement 37 Comments

What design space, if any, is there in codifying cards like Shadowborn Apostle and Relentless Rats with the type line "Basic Creature"? Is that even something R&D would be willing to try?

I’ve been told by Rules Managers that it wouldn’t actually work.

Black's Color Pie

New 03 Feb 2018 Asked by thesharkupon 39 Comments

Is the Relentless Rats/Shadowborn Apostle ability in Black's color pie? it seems much more in-color for White or Green. Is it in any color's part of the pie?

It’s not limited to Black.

Will we ever see another creature/card like relentless rats or shadowborn apostle?

Probably.

Deck Construction Rules

New 01 Aug 2017 Asked by annorax 59 Comments

Why did Shadowborn Apostle and Relentless Rats get an ability that lets them dodge the deck construction rules? It seems like a more elegant solution would've been to give them the Basic supertype; there's already support for Basic cards in the deck construction rules, so they wouldn't need to be quite so wordy if that were used.

This probably needs to go into the FAQ. The Basic supertype does not let you play more than four of the card. The five basic land are called out specifically in the tournament rules.

No Limit Card Future

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by somethingtothatextent 34 Comments

Do you ever think you'll make another card like relentless rats or shadowborn apostle, that have no limit of how many you can run? And if you do, will it be in black again?

I think we one day will and I don’t feel it’s restricted to black.

EDH Deck Limits

New 10 Sep 2015 Asked by coffeeshops-and-flannels-deacti 17 Comments

Okay so I've gotten different answers on this question so I figured I'd come to you because you're a WotC VIP. Does Shadowborn Apostle's ability let you have as many as you want in an EDH deck or does it still have to follow the singleton rule?

I’m not an expert on Commander. My guess is you can only have one.

Basic Supertype Consideration

New 15 Aug 2015 Asked by jedipearce 23 Comments

Have y'all ever considered giving cards like Shadowborn Apostle the Basic supertype?

I’ve been told by Tabak that it isn’t how the supertype Basic works.

Relentless Rats Query

New 17 Mar 2015 Asked by meta-tality 34 Comments

Is there a reason Relentless Rats or Shadowborn Apostle cannot be Basic Creatures? It seems that basic is already a super-type meaning "can have as many as you want", so I'm curious if there is a mechanical reason prohibiting this. Alternatively, is it just because you don't want to risk confusing people?

This is a Matt question. There’s a reason we can’t (or don’t want to) do that but I don’t remember it.

Card-Specific Designs

New 20 Nov 2013 Asked by dts87-deactivated20140415 25 Comments

How do you feel about designs that specifically reference other cards by name? The Bogbrew witch gang from M14, and Shadowborn Apostle come to mind, among others. I have no idea if it's popular or not, and if it's good or not for the game.

I like them but feel they need to be small enough in number to feel special.
