Banning Cards Together

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by j-waffles 42 Comments

Has it ever been considered for cards to only be banned *together*? For example, felidar guardian is banned in pioneer because of how it combos with Saheeli Rai. Would it ever be considered to ban those cards being in the same deck, but still allowing them separately?

It’s a much more complicated message, and is significantly harder to track. If a card is banned and you see your opponent play it, you know they’re doing something they shouldn’t. But if it’s banned only under certain circumstances, now you don’t know, and there isn’t a good way for you to know. That’s a problem.

Fae and Saheeli Rai

Please don't ever have a Seelie or Unseelie fae in a world especially with Saheeli Rai in it the confusion of words would be obnoxious.

What if she became a fae? Unseelie Saheeli Rai Fae. : )

Trivia on Saheeli Rai

New 02 Jun 2020 Asked by lothcaramon 47 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my 31st birthday, and I would like some trivia on my favorite planeswalker, Saheeli Rai. Thank you very much in advance!

Saheeli was created because we wanted a Planeswalker to be the main fave for the set. We didn’t have what we needed, so we made one.Happy Birthday!

Hi Mark, today's my birthday! Do you have any trivia on some of my favorite planeswalkers, Saheeli Rai and Tamiyo? Thanks!

Tamiyo is a scientists that travels the multiverse studying moons. The reason she was on Innistrad is that it has a very odd moon made of silver. Happy Birthday!

Dack in C18 Consideration

New 27 Jul 2018 Asked by ned-of-the-net 41 Comments

Was Dack Fayden ever considered to take Saheeli Rai's place in C18?

Not that I know of. He’s a thief not an artificer.

U/R Artificer Commander

New 26 Apr 2018 Asked by yggdrasild49 31 Comments

MaRo, Re: Jhoira When did you realize that players wanted a U/R Artificer Commander? Was it when Saheeli Rai was printed, or before? Is Jhoira this Commander, or maybe there is some other Legendary waiting for us in the near future? TBH, I love the character, love the art, and it's a pretty efficient, straightforward card. But I can't help thinking that she could have been a bit more exciting than "play artifact, draw 1"?

The goal was to make her universally useful.

Last-Minute Card Adjustments

New 15 Jan 2018 Asked by paxaqua 32 Comments

Ian Duke mentioned in his article today that Rampaging Ferocidon was designed after Saheeli Rai- Felidar Guardian became a thing, but before the banning. This seems pretty recent. What’s the absolute latest that a card can get thrown in a set or reconfigured order to respond to the standard environment?

We can still make minor last minute changes to Spaghetti, the fall set.

Banning Criteria

New 28 Apr 2017 Asked by aurellharmonics 47 Comments

Was any thought given to banning Saheeli Rai instead of Felidar Guardian? Clearly neither card is ban-worthy alone, and at least for myself, Felidar Guardian+Cloudblazer is great standard whereas Saheeli is barely playable.

History has shown us that players are happier the lower the rarity of the card banned.

Emotional Impact of Saheeli

New 17 Dec 2016 Asked by captainjackharness 72 Comments

I for one was extremely hyped to see Saheeli Rai in Kaladesh. I totally didn't get how powerful an emotion it was until I saw that teaser with her in it. And then the stories, filled with tiny setting details like Chandra describing mango or Ajani smelling the spices in the market were like coming home again. Thanks guys! :)

Gatewatch Story Focus

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by lazcarno 63 Comments

"A while ago you were asking who our favorite members of the Gatewatch were. What do you say to people who don't like any of them?" "I ask that you give them a chance." My issue with the Gatewatch isn't that I particularly DISlike any of them, but rather that there are a lot of other PW characters that I like a lot MORE than them, and so I'm saddened by the idea of the story focusing on these five characters at the expense of Everyone Else. I'm very interested in what you have to say to that.

It’s not at the expense of everyone else. Ob Nixilis and Kiora (and to a lesser extent Ugin) were in Battle for Zendikar block. Sorin, Nahiri and Tamiyo were in Shadows over Innistrad block. Ajani and Tezzeret play major roles in Kaladesh block (not to mention the introduction of new planeswalkers Dovin Baan and Saheeli Rai). We are making a strong effort to involve other planeswalkers.

Planeswalkers as Commanders

New 15 Sep 2016 Asked by herkles1 88 Comments

Since Saheeli Rai took the U/R legendary slot of the Kaladesh block. It got me thinking. Next time you replace a legendary with a planeswalker. please include the line: THIS PLANESWALKER CAN BE YOUR COMMANDER. could you do that? :)

We don’t reference Commander outside of the Commander product. For what it’s worth, if it were up to me, you could chose Planeswalkers as your commanders.Note: It’s not up to me.

Kaladesh Multicolor Limits

New 14 Sep 2016 Asked by donated-warroir-9 234 Comments

I really hope that kaladesh doesn't become like innistrad and get everything pretty close to perfect except for forgetting the glaringly obvious card. Please don't let the R/U artifact matters legend become the new legendary werewolf.

Kaladesh is not a gold set which means there are limited slots for multicolor cards. We have a Blue/Red character who is focused on artifacts. That character is Saheeli Rai. So no, Kaladesh does not have a legendary Blue/Red creature that mechanically cares about artifacts.

Planeswalker Gender Balance

New 24 Jun 2016 Asked by kilconey 148 Comments

So with Narset, Arlinn and now Saheeli Rai all in quick succession, is there a new trend for "local female planeswalker, featured on her native plane, ancillary story role" or is that just coincidence?

The planeswalker gender balance was skewed towards male and we’re trying help create balance.

Saheeli Rai's Colors

New 08 Jun 2016 Asked by mr-catastr0phe 66 Comments

If it's not super confidential at the moment, what colors are Saheeli Rai?

I’m willing to call colors of cards in a set not yet published as “super confidential”. : )

Excitement for Saheeli Rai

New 19 May 2016 Asked by captainjackharness 112 Comments

Can I just say I'm super, super hyped to have Saheeli Rai? I'm getting real Indian vibes so far, and I'm so happy to have someone of my culture in the game~!

That’s exactly why diversity is so important. We want every player to be able to see someone like them in the game.
