Creature Type Specificity

New 30 Aug 2023 Asked by gramplot 41 Comments

What do you think about making specific jobs like blacksmith, farmer, fisherman, butcher and innkeeper creature types instead of keeping them all as peasants?

I don’t think we’re going into that much detail. I can see things like Doctor occasionally happening.

Unique Creature Types

New 20 Jul 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 32 Comments

"Why were child and guest made creature types? They aren't really classes or occupations the way most other creature types are. Not all creature types have to be classes or occupations. They’re categories you can apply to creatures." Neither is Peasant, but we have lots of those. There's Cowards too.

Also Elder (in least in how we use it, to mean very old).

Creature Type Update

New 24 Jun 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 27 Comments

If The Grand Creature Update was being done today, would Shu Farmer get updated to Human Peasant? If not, is it because you think it wouldn’t be intuitive with the elements of the card (such as name, art, printed type line, and flavor text). If so, why wasn’t it updated when peasant was introduced as a creature type?

We are much more cautious when introducing class creature types as they aren’t as intuitive. Usually, you have to have the word in your name or have a clear-cut, compelling flavor argument.

Survivors Creature Support

New 24 May 2022 Asked by blazinjsin 34 Comments

Survivors are a unique creature type made as a token for a card in Alliances twenty-six years ago. I wouldn’t call it supported in the way that Wizard or Rogue, or even Peasant, are. You forgot that Varchild takes survivors, making it a relevant creature type

I’m not saying the token creatures shouldn’t be Survivors. I was saying them existing doesn’t mean Survivor has to be treated on par with the creature types I mentioned.

Eltruel Survivors Typeline

New 23 May 2022 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 40 Comments

How come Eltruel Survivors are Peasants, not Survivors? I thought eponymous creature types were always included in the typeline?

Survivors are a unique creature type made as a token for a card in Alliances twenty-six years ago. I wouldn’t call it supported in the way that Wizard or Rogue, or even Peasant, are.

Suggested Creature Type Batches

New 15 Apr 2022 Asked by anonleoleo 39 Comments

Hi Mark, your blog has inspired a new suggestion for creature type batches in the future: a batch for Citizens and Townsfolk (and maybe Peasants too?)!

I’m happy to hear batching suggestions (provided they are only of existing things).

Choosing Between Peasant and Citizen

Peasant and Citizen seem to serve the same purpose. How do you decide which creature type to use?

It depends on the environment.

Tribal Changes Explanation

New 08 Nov 2021 Asked by penguinius 28 Comments

"Whenever we make a new set on an old world (at least ones that explore the same mechanical themes), we think about cross set pollination. Changing Human tribal to Peasant tribal would keep the cards from different Innistrad sets from working together." Isn't this what happened to Werewolves in terms of transform triggers or is that a bit too granular as werewolves can still be played with werewolves regardless?

New Werewolves do work in conjunction with Old Werewolves the vast majority of the time. Human and Peasant tribal only work on cards that are both, which is a tiny portion of Humans.

Changing Human to Peasant Tribal

New 07 Nov 2021 Asked by cairnwanderer 39 Comments

Can we change Human Tribal to Peasant Tribal in Innistrad?

Whenever we make a new set on an old world (at least ones that explore the same mechanical themes), we think about cross set pollination. Changing Human tribal to Peasant tribal would keep the cards from different Innistrad sets from working together.

Those are not the same thing.

Dragon Consumption Query

New 23 Nov 2019 Asked by heshotmeagain 62 Comments

Charlie do you eat dragons

No! I don’t eat dragon ‘cause, uh, it’s-it’s not a meal for peasants, it’s a meal for kings, and I’m sort of a common man.

Townsfolk vs Peasant Type

New 06 Oct 2019 Asked by waxingnostalgicforthe90s 36 Comments

In ELD, was there talk of bringing back the Townsfolk creature type instead of using Peasant?

There was talk. Not every world has towns though.

Token Creature Type Changes

New 24 Sep 2019 Asked by doortonothingness 33 Comments

Does creature type updating only apply to creature cards? Could Thatcher Revolt, say, get errata'd to produce Human Peasant tokens?

I don’t know if we’ve ever errataed token creature types. Anyone aware of an example?

More Peasant Creatures

New 24 Sep 2019 Asked by sableargyle 46 Comments

Can we have more peasants? I want to make peasant tribal now.

It’s a creature type now - that’s how it begins.

Peasant Type Omission

New 17 Sep 2019 Asked by lavaanddiamond-blog 61 Comments

Your article today mentioned 3 of the new creature types but didn't say anything about Peasant! Just an oversight?

Just an oversight. Sorry, Peasant.

Flavor Text Importance

New 20 Jun 2018 Asked by crippylicious 60 Comments

Actually, flavor text peasants have a very similar role to that of the Nurse or Tutor.

The idea that lower economic class people can’t matter in stories or environments is just close-mindedness.

Flavor Text Impact

New 20 Jun 2018 Asked by hgghy123 188 Comments

Re: FLAVOR TEXT 'A hard-working farmer adds just as much depth to a world as a king.' Not at all. We can infer the existence of a hundred thousand peasants, but they will never affect the story. A Leader will. The only time peasants really matter (from a storytelling perspective) is when they interact with a Leader (Merry or Pippin from the Lord of the Rings), or when we are looking at events from their perspective (The nurse or the tutor from Medea).

Luke Skywalker was a moisture farmer. : )
