Muraganda Petroglyphs

Adventure and Petroglyphs

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by exclusionmage 34 Comments

Okay, so having an adventure keeps Besotted Knight from being "vanilla", but does that keep it from working with Muraganda petroglyphs?

I believe he does work with Muraganda Petroglyphs.

Besotted Knight Query

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by stormcrow13 31 Comments

Even though Besotted Knight is not a vanilla creature because of the adventure, does Besotted Knight count as having no abilities for effects like Muraganda Petroglyphs?

I think so. Not 100% sure though.

Muraganda, Vanilla Matters

New 10 May 2023 Asked by missmoo77 53 Comments

I think the main reason everyone's asking about vanilla matters with Muraganda is that they're worried about how Muraganda would feel without something to make it stand out and not just feel like another Ixalan/Ikoria. I have faith that if we ever visited Muraganda it would be fleshed out to include more and feel unique but between vanilla creatures (and I think relatedly Core Sets) being cycled out and Muraganda Petroglyphs I think it's a yearning for a nostalgia hit of simpler magic.

If we ever make Muraganda, we’ll give it a mechanical identity. It’s what we do. I don’t think the current “vanilla matters” theme on this blog is caused by a desire for premier sets to have more vanilla creatures. I think it’s more about this unattainable idea that’s exciting in concept.

Design Struggles with Muraganda

New 09 Apr 2022 Asked by onebuckchuck 67 Comments

Does the fact that Muraganda Petroglyphs and Imperiosaur represent set themes that are very challenging to design around and still remain deep/fun make a Muraganda set less likely? Essentially, could you make Muraganda without having to consider those cards when doing so?

My guess is if we did Muraganda, we’d make a few cards to support a casual constructed “vanilla matters” theme, but it wouldn’t be part of limited nor tournament constructed.

'Vanilla' Interacts with Abilities

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by tybonel13 52 Comments

"No text can make it vanilla." Couldn't "____ loses all abilities" make a creature 'vanilla' (at least for the purposes of cards like Ruxa and Muraganda Petroglyphs)?

Yes, for purposes of those cards, it works.

Vanilla-Matters Theme Colors

New 24 Aug 2021 Asked by corhydraeuniverse-blog 19 Comments

If a potential visit to Muraganda (or some other set) had a vanilla-matters theme, which colors would it most likely be centered in? Green is a given, looking at Muraganda Petroglyphs and Ruxa. I think both white and blue could fit the flavor? White as in "seeing the value in even the lowliest soldier" and Blue in "realizing the full potential of even the most unassuming creature".

I don’t think the theme would be big enough to be in two colors.

Vanilla Theme Complexity

New 16 Feb 2020 Asked by zanmor 27 Comments

One more try: in your podcast about vanilla matters issues, one you mention is wordiness. But Muraganda Petroglyphs is all of "Creatures with no abilities get +2/+2." I'm just curious if wordiness ("creature with no abilities") is actually an issue or if you were just misremembering the card there?

Wordiness is way down on the list of concerns. My point was caring about vanilla creatures can get complicated when it’s a whole theme. Muraganda Peteoglyphs has the luxury of being the only card that cares about this thing in the set it’s in and thus gets to be less wordy.

Howdy Mark! Are there cards which favor vanilla creatures?

Muraganda Visitation Odds

New 07 Oct 2019 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 172 Comments

It's not fair to have one card be the cause of Muraganda being unlikely to visit, is it? Especially since that card was printed in a set that was showing off unusual, & in some cases intentionally unvisitable, future iterations of MtG? Steamflogger Boss was intended as nothing more than a joke, why can't that be true for Muraganda Petroglyphs? You would cater to enfranchised players a lot more by putting a personality behind a cool Planechase card rather than adhering to a forgettable jank rare.

Let’s try this. For people who want to see Muraganda, what are your expectations for it?

Muraganda Design Philosophy

New 07 Oct 2019 Asked by automaticwastelandpost 35 Comments

The way I get it, Imperiosaur and Muraganda Petroglyphs do not contradict each other. One rewards playing with basic lands, the other with simple creatures, that is to say, normal, non-convoluted gameplay. I thought Muraganda was conceived as a "return to basics" plane.

“Return to basics” is more of a core set thing.

Vanilla Matters Feasibility

New 17 Mar 2019 Asked by cursedereaper 42 Comments

Follow up to the Vanilla Matters. I listened to the Podcast and first of all very insightful especially the part about A & B Design or the problem with granting abilities like trample. But I tought that the A & B statement feels deprecated now that you made Nullhide Ferox that actually becomes affected by Muraganda Petroglyphs. So would Vanilla Matters be possible if you make more card that can make themself lose all abilities until end of turn? Or would that solve to little problems?

There’s a big difference between: “can you find a way to make it work?” and “is it fun gameplay?”

Podcast on Vanilla Matters

Following Muraganda Petroglyphs example, more cards that interact specifically with vanillas?? I imagine a Lord of vanillas, personally...

I did a whole podcast why “Vanilla matters” is hard to do as a major theme.

Vanilla Creatures Support

New 02 Feb 2019 Asked by greateggsstudentdonkey-deactiva 41 Comments

Vanilla creatures are great ways of pushing power on cards. However, all but the toughest, like Gigantosaurus, usually don’t see play. Are there any plans for vanilla-specific support, like Muraganda Petroglyphs?

A deck filled with vanilla creatures that doesn’t go anything unless you draw and cast your vanilla helping card doesn’t seem like particularly fun Magic.

Muraganda Design Philosophy

New 02 Jan 2019 Asked by emracoolio 45 Comments

Muraganda Petroglyphs wouldn't necessarily have to define a Muraganda set, would it? Mimeoplasm is also from Muraganda. Couldn't you just reprint Petroglyphs, maybe make vanilla matters a subtheme of the set alá knights in Dominaria, and then move on to other design and creative space that goes with a prehistoric plane?

It can’t be a big theme, so if we did it, that’s how it would have to be.

Ah, that’s what the 4/4 was referencing. Got it.

Not sure.

Complex Ability Effects

New 03 Jun 2018 Asked by centurosplaneswalker 37 Comments

Would you potentially make a Muraganda Petroglyphs-style effect that cares about "creatures with no activated or triggered abilities", or would that prove too confusing?

I’m not sure the majority of players can separate a static effect from a triggered effect.

Muraganda Petroglyphs Reprint Potential

New 30 Apr 2017 Asked by voxpvoxd 47 Comments

Do you think it would be possible to reprint Muraganda Petroglyphs in a Muraganda block without trying to shoehorn an entire set theme around it?

A fine idea.

Troublesome Ideas

New 30 Apr 2017 Asked by neotrup 59 Comments

Dryad Arbor wasn't a vanilla creature when it was first printed, but is now thanks to color indicators. It still doesn't benefit from Muraganda Petroglyphs because not having abilities is different from not having rules text. I don't know if my point is that creature lands are a bad idea or vanilla matters is a bad idea.

They’re both bad ideas. Well, troublesome ideas.

No Abilities Theme

New 27 Apr 2017 Asked by shroudtailor 36 Comments

Would you ever build a theme around creatures with no abilities? Muraganda Petroglyphs was one of my favorite future-shifted cards. :)

It’s a much shallower theme than people think.
