No. Mutate is referring to a keyword mechanic named “mutate”.

Six-y Beast Clarification

If Six-y Beast enters the battlefield with an additional number of counters on it(say, from a master biomancer) is the opponent guessing the number of counters that I choose, or the total number of counters?

You just have to clarify what you mean when guessing.

Master Biomancer Trivia

Hey, MaRo, it is my birthday - could I have some trivia on my favorite card, Master Biomancer?

The Simic have an experimentation theme that we often represent with +1/+1 counters. For extra flavor points we added in the addition of the creature being a Mutant.Happy Birthday!

So I just noticed that Master Biomancer's name is a reference to Biomantic Mastery from Dissension. You guys sure are sneaky with your references!

We are sneaky.

Mutants and Flavor

New 28 Jan 2013 Asked by moone513 13 Comments

Why does Master Biomancer make creatures mutants? I get that it's flavorful, but all the other cards in the set that add +1/+1 counters don't do that, and there's nothing in the set that cares about Mutants.

Sometimes doing things for flavor is enough.

Ooze Flux Design

New 22 Jan 2013 Asked by suliscrew 9 Comments

Did you make Ooze Flux? It seems like a very Johnny-ish card to me especially when paired with Master Biomancer. Also Ooze Flux is VERY Simic but why doesn't it have the Simic watermark too? It works best with the evolve mechanic.

Ooze Flux is all me. I also helped keep it alive through the development process. Johnny cards never poll well in the internal rare poll so I always have to go protect them. In order to get a watermark you have to match the criteria. Playing well with Simic isn’t enough. But yes, the card was clearly designed with Simic (and one other guild) in mind.

Vorthos Ninja Turtles

I just realized that if you play Master Biomancer, then play Sakashima's Student as a copy of Horned Turtle, then Sakashima's Student becomes a Mutant Ninja Turtle. Thank you. I suppose if there needs to be a question here, is that the kind of thing Vorthos enjoys?

It is. If only I had made Magical Hacker (from Unhinged) a Human Teenage Gamer. It was that way for much of design.
