Map Tokens

Explore and Map Tokens Future

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by dwarf-scum 5 Comments

The next time we see explore and/or map tokens, do you think it’s more likely to be a set mechanic or could we start to see it used here and there on individual cards where it makes sense?

It has a nested mechanic (explore), so I only think it will exist in a set with explore.

Artifact Tokens Design

On the subject of artifact tokens (Junk seems great and flavorful and I'm also hoping to see it used again in the future), do you think Map tokens could have been allowed instant speed activations? I understand there's some play design reluctance when it comes to "on-board tricks", but how much different is it from knowing a revealed card in hand or any other activatable ability on board? Plus there are already some cards that allow Explore at instant speed and players are used to clues/food/treasure at this point...

They did explore it in design, and didn’t like how it played. It forces you to always play as if it is a +1/+1 counter.

Combat Trick Restrictions

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by grandehipopotamo 36 Comments

Magic has been refraining from printing on-board combat tricks, so stuff like the Map token can only be used at sorcery speed. Why's that? Is it because of a feelsbad "Oh, I should have known this!" that happens with this type of effect?

Yeah, walking into a clear on-board trick is frustrating and adds more mental load to board states.

Play Boosters Token Slot

Howdy Mark! I just finished reading your article about Play boosters, and a combination of that plus what has been said about WOE and token accessibility recently, I really think Play Boosters should have a dedicated token slot included, separate from the ad/aide/art card slot (which should all remain in the current slot). Not only would this allow more ad/aide/art cards to exist (as they would have their own slot to exist in), but it makes sure that tokens are prolific and relatively easy to find.I know it's not always seen this way, but I really do think that tokens are essential game pieces. With how many are made now that have predefined characteristics (we now have Map tokens, and WOE had 6 roles in the main set), they are in fact something that is required to make gameplay easier.I can remember all the roles cause MtG is my hyperfocus and I'm crazy, but people like my spouse who play a LOT less than me don't have that luxury. My spouse was very turned off by roles because we didn't open the right roles for our prerelease event that matched our cards we opened, and the idea is already a little complicated even assuming you have all the correct tokens. How do you feel about Play Boosters having a dedicated token slot? If you agree, can you pass along the note that more tokens will create a happier world?

There are a lot of discussions happening about the need for play boosters to provide the proper number of token cards.

Token Power Differential

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by followingthemagic 41 Comments

I find the balance of two very similar ideas but particularly powerful tokens revealed recently odd. Junk tokens are free “card advantage” at sorcery speed, while map tokens are pay 1 and not guaranteed card advantage also at sorcery speed. Is there a reason/ thoughts as to the power differential here, one costing mana and seemingly less powerful vs no mana and more? Commander focused design or does the potential +1/+1 counter play a lot into it?

They are in different sets with different goals and needs.

Map Tokens Restriction

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by thebeardedsir 42 Comments

I’ve been trying to figure out why Map tokens are restricted to sorcery speed when none of the other predefined tokens are. The best I could come up with is it could lead to feel-bads if a player is hoping that the “onboard trick” of the +1/+1 counter will save their creature when they make combat decisions only to have them reveal a land. I know you’re not responsible for balance, but do you have thoughts about why this might have been decided this way?

We don’t like “on board tricks” (aka things that are public knowledge, so it also includes activated abilities on cards in the graveyard) that can cause players to unexpectedly lose creatures mid-combat, so we usually use “sorcery speed” for them.

Map Tokens Mechanic

I'm a little disappointed that map tokens require you to have a creature to activate. Were they ever just look at the top card of your library and leave it, mill it, or put it in your hand if its a land?

We wanted the to just be explore, so that required a creature.
