Potent Red Creature Query

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by mrmoustachemm 32 Comments

Re: the Goblin Guide ask, I think the asker just wants a 2/2 Haste for R without any other text. So, if/when on that?

If. A 2/2 for R, with no drawback, is already over the line.

Hi Mark! If/when goblin guide with no downside?

Peeking at a card in the opponent’s hand isn’t particularly red.

Powerful Creatures' Types

New 22 May 2022 Asked by su92 35 Comments

How is it decided if a particularly powerful creature should have a relevant creature type? It seems you wouldn't want the best creatures to also be tribal compatible (for balance), but somehow Goblin Guide is a Goblin, Delver is a Human Wizard, etc.

Creature types, if they aren’t mechanically relevant within the set, are decided by the creative team usually through card concepting. We don’t avoid powerful cards being on creature types that have other powerful cards.

Goblin Guide Trivia

Hi Mark! My birthday was a few weeks ago, but I just made a tumblr account today, so I wanted to know if I could have some trivia about my favorite card, Goblin Guide! Thanks!

The person who designed Goblin Gane wasn’t sure we could go it in black border, but the Rules Manager said, “No problem”. Happy Belated Birthday!

Creature Downside Perception

New 04 Jun 2016 Asked by piogre 29 Comments

"Why do all of you not like downsides on creatures? (Note we still do make some.)" - I feel that's a bit disingenuous, given that some very popular creatures (like goblin guide and new-zurgo in red) are creatures-with-downsides

Here’s what we’ve learned over the years. Players like creatures with drawbacks only if they find them very flavorful. Otherwise, they tend to test poorly.

Reprint Strategy

New 10 Jan 2016 Asked by aazadan 36 Comments

When the core sets were removed, you said reprints would happen more aggressively. Yet with BFZ block now fully known we can see that the cards which most needed the reprints like IoK, and Goblin Guide couldn't be reprinted due to power level concerns. Is R&D going to reconsider the power level Standard is being maintained at so that reprints can actually happen?

We’re going to obviously talk about what to do with reprints, but Standard-legal sets is just one avenue for us to explore.

Goblin Trivia Birthday

New 29 Aug 2015 Asked by vabolo 40 Comments

Greetings Maro! I've been waiting nearly a year to get some Magic Birthday Trivia, so here goes: could I get some fresh, unheard info about either members of my favourite tribe, Goblin Guide or Goblin Piledriver? Many a thanks!

Goblin Guide is another in a long series of 2/2 red creatures (usually Goblins) for a single Red mana with a drawback. Goblin Guide’s drawback came from a land mechanic we had toyed around with and found not worth using as a keyword but felt cool on one card. Happy Birthday!

Goblin Guide Series Length

You didn't talk about Goblin Guide. Why didn't you talk about Goblin Guide?

There are a lot of cards and I’m trying to keep my series from being too long.

Do you happen to know who designed the ever-awesome Goblin Guide?

Unfortunately, I do not. I only know it wasn’t me.

Development Insights

New 12 Jun 2012 Asked by rivercrab 3 Comments

I'd really like an article on individual cards or strategies that were under-shot or over-shot by development, as well as individual cards that were experimenting with power-level like Tibalt or Restoration Angel (except part of older, more analysable sets). This is one of the most interesting aspects of the game to me. For example - how did Goblin Guide score as a card? Did it meet or exceed your expectations? That sort of thing.

I’ll pass along your topic to Zac who does the development column.
