Goad

Insta-gator Mechanic

"Insta-gator has to have Goad somehow, so it can be an instigator, right?" I think Provoke would be perfect

Fight has usurped provoke. Insta-gator could force a fight.

Poison in Commander

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 59 Comments

Re: PoisonIt has a problem in Commander (or any other free-for-all format) where normally only one player is using it, so the other players aren't contributing to their win condition (unlike damage.) So the best case scenario for the poison player tends to be eliminating one opponent quickly before gassing out/becoming the archenemy and getting eliminated. Are there any plans to address this in future Commander products, perhaps by introducing creatures with toxic and myriad, and/or cards that goad creatures and give them toxic?

I’m not sure there’s a great need to make poison better in Commander.

Siren Support

New 23 Jan 2023 Asked by nytel-blog 43 Comments

You asked what we would like to in a 'water plane'. I'd like to see more Siren support. There's a couple around a goad theme, but I'd like to see more sirens that force your opponents into doing things. Maybe force them play an instant or sorcery from their hand on another opponent. Drain them of resources, etc.

More Sirens, got it.

Colors for Goad Mechanic

What colors gets goad now?

It’s forced attack, so it’s primary in blue and red, the colors primary in that ability. Black is secondary.

Consideration for Goad Mechanic

Good day or night?Did you though in making goad deciduous or evergreen instead of the usual must attack if able?

Goad is now evergreen in multiplayer products.

Why 'Must Attack' Unfun

New 19 Apr 2022 Asked by supercoolswordfish 45 Comments

Why is "must attack" considered an unfun mechanic(or more specifically "but we've found the gameplay is not always great. So we've been doing less of this in red overall."). Most players in this community love effects like goad and giving opponents creatures "attacks this turn if able"?

Making opponents creatures attack is different than having creatures you play in your deck that must attack.

Muscle Sliver Art and Goad

New 06 Mar 2022 Asked by rwssr 28 Comments

Hi Mark, two questions. Can we ever get the Dual Masters art of Muscle Sliver released on a tournament legal card, and now that Goad is evergreen for Commander, can we at least see it as deciduous in premier sets?

I’m not sure the rules of reusing Duel Master art. We have no plans of using goad in non-multiplayer sets.

Possibility of Provoke in Red

New 18 May 2021 Asked by brom-stormcrow 29 Comments

To weigh in on the provoke conversation. Is there a chance we could see it return in red? Alongside goad effects provoke always struck me as more red than green. And then wouldn't overlap greens fight mechanics.

Fight is secondary in red.

Goading as an Evergreen Ability

Why doesn't R&D allow goading to be come a evergreen keyword so they can give red and blue a new ability to use?

Goad works much better in multiplayer games.

Goad Mechanic Usage

New 05 Apr 2018 Asked by anarchypete 32 Comments

Goad is a mechanic I really enjoy, but I thought it weird to be a keyword that only appears on 6 cards. Isn't that a keyword being on so few cards something you try to avoid?

It depends on where it’s used. We’re willing to dip a little lower in supplemental sets. Six is quite low though for a keyword.
