Hi Mark, I saw Magic was going to be at New York Comic Con, do you know if it's a booth and/or panel?

I don’t know. I can probably get more info as we get closer.

GenCon and Set Announcements

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by hunter61 2 Comments

Hi Mark, are the sets for the upcoming year announced at GenCon? Will you be there?

I will not be at Gen Con. They have announced the events there, although I don’t know them off the top of my head.

It’s Bloomburrow related, but some stuff you don’t know.

Comic Con Panel Topic

Any sneak peek or hints you can offer about your panel at San Diego Comic Con?

I have a topic I’ve never done before, one that will give an interest look behind the scene.

Excitement for Duskmourn

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by livefromtheloam 21 Comments

Hi Mark! Guy who missed the Gen Con announcement here again. I just wanted to add to the chorus of people saying how excited they are for Duskmourn, specifically BECAUSE it's a more modern take on horror. I was worried I'd find it boring because Phyrexians, Eldrazi, and Innistrad have all done horror in MtG already. Instead we have neon lighting, puffy vests, static portals, possessed appliances, and a gang of plucky youngsters joining up with roving survivors. Neon Dynasty was the first setting to really prove that futuristic settings could be done and done well, while still feeling like it's in the multiverse we all know and love. I'm sure Duskmourn will adapt a more modern world just as well.

I can’t wait for you to see more of it.

Preview Panel Feedback

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by kylekpratt 8 Comments

"Absolute faith. The audience is *so* excited for Bloomburrow we didn’t feel a need to focus on it." I must admit that this was not my experience. I was extremely excited to tune into the preview panel to get a sense of the cards I'm next going to open, draft, and play with. The panel's virtual lack of Bloomburrow content dampened my enthusiasm and made it feel like the extremely fast sprint between magic sets is even faster than it currently is. We were getting AC spoilers a week ago.

The preview panel at Chicago Magic Con (which I was on) had the same effect. Yeah, we showed cards from Outlaws of Thunder Junction, the next set, but everyone wanted to talk about Bloomburrow. The unknown thing just pulls attention.

Duskmourn Theme and Enchantment Frames

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by livefromtheloam 7 Comments

Hi Mark! Two things. One, I guessed that Duskmourn would have an 80s horror movie theme and was thrilled that the preview cards look freaking sweet! Two, a huge THANK YOU to the folks responsible for giving enchantments the Nyx frame. I am very excited for Magic this year.

We did state at the Gen Con panel that announced Duskmourn that it had an 70’s and 80’s horror vibe, but I’m glad you like it. Giving enchantments the Nyx frame has been something we’ve been debating for a while. I’m glad we finally did it.I too am excited for this year. : )

Nalathni Dragon Rarity

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 39 Comments

Weird question. I've been collecting the card "Nalathni Dragon" for years now, and I've got several hundred of them. My friend jokingly said I must have a majority by now, and that made me wonder, how many Nalathni Dragons _are_ there? They were meant as a con promo, so presumably they were a fairly limited print. Is that information you have access to and could share, even vaguely?

Remember that there was so much backlash to it being solely a convention promo and it got put into a copy of The Duelist.I have no idea of the print numbers, but The Duelist inclusion raised it a bit.

Alternate Win Conditions

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by hfufuyffu 34 Comments

Hi Mark! As a big fan of alternative win conditions, I noticed today that I think it's been a while since we've gotten a new one. So I did some research and it seems that besides one or two in UB, there hasn't been a Standard Legal alternate win con since New Capenna. Is this an intentional move away from these effects or has it just been coincidence?

It’s not a conscious move away. We’ll make more.

OTJ Villain Themes

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by the0winter0soldier 19 Comments

Hey Mark. Are you able to tell us if we will see more new or old villains in OTJ?

In the preview panel at Magic Con, we said the set had a villains theme and had new and old villains.

Oko's Spark Uncertainty

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by egr220 35 Comments

Just want to say that I am super excited for both thunder junction and the death race set. Just thinking of all the possibilities for these sets has me ecstatic. With Thunder junction coming out in April and the first look at it being at magiccon next week (I will be there and hope to see you). The key art for the set shows characters lined up with Oko at the helm. It is safe to say that Oko will be seen. Are you at the liberty to say if Oko kept his spark or not?

(High fives to the people who came up for the idea for both thunder junction and the death race sets.)

I sadly can’t answer. On an unrelated that there is a preview panel (that I’m on) at Magic Con Chicago that you might want to come to.

Magic Con Etiquette

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 29 Comments

Hey Mark! I’m very excited to be going to Magic Con Chicago with a group of friends and looking forward to the panels. I’m sure you’ve said it before, but are there any best practices if we happen to see you around to say hi to be respectful of your time? As an aside, I’d love to have a copy of whatever you would consider to be your favorite red-white card you designed to get signed (whatever favorite card that might be when you read this).

You can just approach me if you see me, provided I’m not in the middle of doing something. I’m always happy to interact with players. My favorite red/white card is either Comet, Stellar Pup or Pietra, Crafter of Clowns, both from Unfinity.

Winning Card Preferences

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by anookee 28 Comments

Do you have any thoughts on the difference between cards that outright say "win the game" vs cards that effectively win the game (I.E. Felidar Sovereign vs Aetherflux Reservoir, Door to Nothingness vs Sawnspire of Ulamog, etc.). I've always been partial to the latter. Thanks : )

R&D, as a whole, also leans towards the latter.

Iconic Creature Commanders

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 60 Comments

It may be a weird question but Why weren't the iconic creatures of the colors never the main or subtheme of a commander pre con (except dragons maybe angels if counting secret lair)? Shouldn't there be at least one mono colored Iconic creature commander pre con in the mono color they are iconic for? It feels like Hydra, Sphinx and Demons get the short end of the stick.

I don’t think that is necessarily a thing iconic creatures need to do, but is it something you all want?

Writing Columns Interest

New 27 Sep 2023 Asked by asknationsmith 21 Comments

Missed you at Magic Con! Mark I wanted to ask you if you ever thought of writing columns outside of Magic. You have so many great articles which topically blend in with my favorite game, but your philosophy of being is really wholesome! I think you're a role model for so many...

Maybe one day when I have more spare time.

Magic Con Locations

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by doctortnt20xx 34 Comments

Hey Mark, if I can ask will there be magic con's in locations like Chicago? Would love to attend one but a lot of the magic cons are too far out for me to travel to.

Magic Con is coming to Chicago in February of 2024.

Returning to Tarkir

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by godkingjinping 53 Comments

Can we return to 2014 tarkir

Tarkir is the timeline with the Dragons, but at the Gen Con panel, I said our slogan for Ultimate was “the best of both worlds”.

Sheldon Menery Anecdotes

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 167 Comments

Do you happen to have any anecdotes about Sheldon Menery you could share?

I first met Sheldon when he and I were both judges on the Pro Tour. My memory of our first meeting is he was assigned to help me in the Feature Match area. He walks up and says, “I’m Sheldon. Tell me what you want me to do.”I last saw Sheldon at Magic Con Philadelphia. R&D (Aaron Forsythe, Dave Humpherys, Mike Turian) was doing a signing and Sheldon came to do a signing at the table next to us. I remember watching how much joy he got from interacting with the public. In between those two events, which were over twenty-five years apart, I interacted many, many times with Sheldon. He was a person of great passion, who cared a great deal about how what he did impacted those around him. Magic lost a giant ally today, and he will be greatly missed.
