Quality and Purpose of Decks

New 29 Sep 2021 Asked by charitycharicola 74 Comments

Products like Commander decks, Event Decks, Unsanctioned etc still have bad cards in them and are designed with essentially zero limited in mind. The people who assume that no limited equals no bad cards can look to those for an example.

Here’s another important point. Take a card like Grizzly Bears (2/2 for 1G). That card sees a lot of play outside of limited. Why? It’s strictly worse than a whole bunch of cards. Two main reasons:1) The majority of Magic players aren’t making high-end tournament decks. They play with what they own. 2) There are many decisions people play cards beyond the power level of the card. Maybe they like the art. Maybe they like Bears. Maybe it was a gift from a friend and it emotionally means something to them. We’re still making Grizzly Bear even if we stop caring about limited (which again we’re not doing because it’s highly popular).

At this point in time, not very likely.

Is there any hope of Event Decks coming back?

Not a high one. They didn’t sell well.

Pro Tour Decks Revival

New 12 Mar 2017 Asked by ritchsimpkin 28 Comments

Is there any chance wizards would release gold bordered pro tour decks ever again? They fit a gap mm17 doesn't while giving new players access to more complex strategies. The event decks were close but I still love my Brian seldon deck from the 90s as I could never have afforded the cards. Seeing as net decking is at an all time high casual players just can't easily afford these decks any other way

We stopped printing the decks because they sold poorly. There just wasn’t a large audience for it.

Not any time soon.

Event Decks Cancellation

Hi Mark, if I may, why were Event Decks discontinued? Not enough of us were buying them?

Usually things are discontinued because they aren’t selling well enough.

DFCs Impact

New 24 Apr 2016 Asked by jaxxisr 16 Comments

Did the existence of DFCs and their difficult logistics have anything to do with the decision to not make Clash Packs and Event Decks? Will they ever come back?

They are unconnected. There are no current plans for their return.

Product Line Changes

New 09 Feb 2016 Asked by serpens 59 Comments

OGW didn't have an Event Deck or Clash Pack, and now the announcements for *both* Shadows Over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon don't mention them either - have these products been officially discontinued?

Yes, they’ve officially been discontinued. We are constantly evaluating our product line to make the best series of products we can which means from time to time discontinuing some them.

Product Release Concerns

New 28 Jan 2015 Asked by jayarbuthnot 39 Comments

Hi Mark, there was an article release back on June 2nd 2008 which announced the changes in the Shards of Alara block (Mythic Rares). In the article it stated that WoTC were receiving feedback that too many cards were be released. We now have 5 sets, 5 Commander decks, FTV, Clash decks, Intro decks, 2 Duel Decks, 2 event decks. I lived through the crash of sports cards and then with comics. I'm hoping that there are plans to curtail the amount of product seeing print.

The issue was the number of cards in Standard which is down significantly since then. We make a lot of products but not every product is intended for every player.

DFC Printing Costs

New 06 Jun 2014 Asked by sanmarco82 14 Comments

if DFC are too expensive to print for a supplemental product, why does the modern event deck have double sided tokens?

Tokens are printed with a different printing process (& different card stock) and there is not a one-to-one corollary. Any token can go with any ad card. Double-faced cards ave to have A always go with B.

More stories: I come from a background of bullying and being an outcast, so going to high school felt scary to me. I met some people that I felt I could relax around and be myself, and before long we found magic to really seal the deal on our friendship. We've been getting more serious with the game since then but we're still going strong and we're still the best of friends. Also, shoutout to the people who made the Innistrad human event deck. My first deck and I loved it to death.

Event Decks Production

New 18 Jan 2014 Asked by omegaplatinum 4 Comments

Hey Maro, when event decks are printed, are they printed in a separate line than the rest of the set, or do you take the cards out of the set printing?

Products are almost always done on their own sheet. Only things like promos are done on set sheets.

Website Navigation Issue

New 09 Jan 2014 Asked by peppermintlarry-s 6 Comments

Your probably not the right person but I know you forward this stuff to the right people. Is it possible to have the Magic Arcana articles listed under the "Most Recent Headlines" tab in the front page of DailyMTG? I always miss them and have to go out of my way to find them, mostly being alerted to them by third party magic sites. It just seems odd that every article is listed under Headlines except the Arcana articles. Also, now that I found the article, Woot Modern Event Decks!!!

The daily content isn’t listed there, but there is an archive specifically for Magic Arcana listed in the bottom of the Arcana box on the front page.

Designing for Pre-packaged Products

New 14 Feb 2013 Asked by knittins-blog 3 Comments

During design, is there any consideration for the pre-packaged products like Intro Decks or Event Decks?

Yes, especially when those products have certain needs from the product such as the card on the front of the Intro Deck box.
