Elvish Visionary

Shift in Cantrip Creature Color

New 10 Feb 2022 Asked by wriggleman 39 Comments

I thought "2-mana 1/1 ETB Draw 1" creatures such as Baleful Strix, Dusk Legion Zealot, Elvish Visionary were Sultai color thing. And now we have Spirited Companion. I mean, there were some white "2-mana Draw 1" creatures like Wall of Omen, Orator of Ojutai, but those both had Defender and something else I can't remember as its disadvantage. What has changed and why is it an enchantment on top of it?

Part of our getting white more card drawing was moving small cantrip creatures from green to white. Green will still have larger cantrip creatures but the low drops will now be a primary white thing.

Comparing Card Drawing Abilities

Even White is getting better at Card Draw than Blue. Esper Sentinel? Blue can't even get a color-shifted Elvish Visionary, let alone a card that starts drawing cards from Turn 1, or get card draw engines like Green.

A color being better at a tiny sliver of something is not it being overall better. Blue is the best overall color at card drawing, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best at every different execution of it.

Elvish Visionary Potential in Black

Would Elvish Visionary be a bend or break in black? What is its fundamental weakness?

It would be okay as long as you lose 1 life. I think it would be fine in white though.

Creature cantrip determination

Is a creature with an enter the battlefield effect that draws a card (Elvish Visionary) a cantrip, or are they their own thing?

It’s considered a cantrip.

Is virtual vanilla something like elvish visionary?

A virtual vanilla creature is one who is basically a vanilla creature after its first turn. Elvish Visionary is a virtual vanilla.

Green Card Drawing

New 13 Mar 2017 Asked by gophilipbowles 35 Comments

"Green tends to have its card drawing tied to creatures more elaborately than just having the effect on a creature." Green has the largest number of cantrip creatures (Wall of Blossoms, Elvish Visionary etc.), which amounts to "just having the effect on a creature", so surely the Overbeing card draw is just an extension of that? Especially as green also has self-bounce to reuse these abilities.

Every color has access to cantrips. It’s drawing more than one card that’s the issue.

Could Elvish Visionary be a blue card? Why is it green?

Cantrip creatures are primary in green, secondary in blue.
