Dread Warlock

Creature Type Errata Rules

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by tomwpost 29 Comments

I thought the general rule was that if an old card had a new creature type in the name, it got that creature type added to the card. See: Dread Warlock, and the abundance of Ranger cards. It makes sense not to do functional errata on things like Jacob or Eloise but I guess I'm not seeing why Dogged Detective doesn't fit that rule

The rule is *if* we choose to errata a creature type, we usually do creatures with that creature type in its name.

Errata and Creature Types

When you errata creature types, you just add a new type. For example, "Dread Warlock" changed from "Human Wizard" to "Human Wizard Warlock". Does it follow that "Norin the Wary", if errated, would be "Human Warrior Coward"?

We try to be careful when we add words to cards that aren’t printed on them.

Will the creature card Dread Warlock be updated to be a Warlock?

I assume so.

Warlock Type Reclassification

Now that warlock is a creature type, will we see some cards reclassified to that type of reprints? Similar to the way dinosaurs were.

We might redo Dread Warlock as it has the word Warlock in its name. I think most of the changes will be going forward.

Creature Type Errata

With Warlock and Noble new creatures types, will we see older cards get errata? Like Dread Warlock from 2010, or Faerie Noble from Homelands?

I know they’re going to errata a bunch of old cards with Noble. I’m not sure about Warlock as that’s harder to understand what gets it without the words to guide you.
