Comparing Mechanics to Kicker

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 32 Comments

So we all know the running joke of "Everything is kicker", but is there a mechanic you admit is indeed just kicker with a different name in retrospect? Personally I think Cleave is one of the ones that does feel like just a slightly more complicated Kicker.

Many mechanics could be done (a few with a little tweaking) with kicker.

Cleave and Name Change

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 59 Comments

If/when a card with cleave named something like “pl[aceh]o[lder ]c[ard n]o[. 1]” Meaning using cleave changes the name.

If. That’s acorn/silver border territory.

Untapped Mechanic Potential

What mechanic do you think has the most untapped design space? For me I think it's cleave.

I’ll say kicker. : )

Cleave Cards Complexity

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by riptidecrab 42 Comments

I don't enjoy cleave cards as much as I think I would. I just realized why. They always make me take an extra beat to comprehend, even when I've seen them over and over. It's because the higher cost results in fewer words. This structure works opposite to a player's instinctive sense that spending more mana has a bigger effect and that more words does more. What do you think?

They definitely proved hard for players to grok. I think them being subtractive is a piece of that.

Mechanic Reception

New 08 Jul 2023 Asked by blind42-blog 42 Comments

Are there any mechanics that were not well recieved that may have only been that way due to not being pushed enough rather than a core issue with the mechanic itself? E.g. if the real problem with cleave is that cleaving costed too much or did not do enough? Is this usually taken into consideration when evaluating whether to bring it back?

The classic example is chroma. It was poorly received. We revamped it as devotion and it was a huge hit.

Cleave Mechanic Origins

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by jimreviewsthickshakes-blog 33 Comments

On your podcast today you mentioned that cleave was originally intended as the family mechanic for Obscura. Are you sure it wasn’t the brokers? I think it would have been great for the lawyers!

The lawyers weren’t lawyers yet in vision design.

Mechanic Design Swaps

New 24 Feb 2023 Asked by cyrusthevirus1117 67 Comments

You mentioned earlier in a post that Cleave was designed originally for the Obscura Family, Are there any other mechanics that were designed for other sets but were swapped? And how far into the design process does that happen?

It happens somewhat frequently. Energy was designed for original Mirrodin, for example.

New Capenna Trivia

New 21 Feb 2023 Asked by salems-city 45 Comments

Hi Mark, I'd like to use sacred law of birthday trivia. My name is Oskar, so can you share something about Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer? Or alternatively, some trivia about New Capenna (my fav new plane from recent years)?

The Cleave mechanic used in Crimson Vow was originally created for the Obscura family.Happy Birthday!

Localization Challenges

New 04 Jan 2023 Asked by escapingburger 38 Comments

When creating a mechanic like Overload or Cleave that changes the card text, do you work with your localization team in advance to understand its impact on different languages? I did a little research and found that Overload cards in Japanese actually spell out the new effect in the reminder text, for example.

Of course.

Unexpected Feedback on Cleave

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by doopboopdoop 54 Comments

What mechanic this year had the most surprisingly negative response?

I think the mechanic I got the most negative feedback on, in the last year, was cleave. It has its fans though.

Drawing for Creatures

New 06 Aug 2022 Asked by questionm4ster 27 Comments

For those asking about "draw = number of creatures", Winged Portent from Crimson Vow has draw for each flyer you control or if you cleave for 4GU, you draw instead for each creature you control. Does this not mean drawing for each creature you control is UG space?

I think green/blue is the second best combination to do it, so it might get it on occasion.

Cleave Original's Family

New 27 Jun 2022 Asked by narnalubat 30 Comments

Hey Mark, sorry if this has been asked before, but I was curious which New Capenna family Cleave original was the mechanic for

It was either the Obscura or the Maestros.

Cleave and Overload Pairing

New 02 Jun 2022 Asked by bergdg 45 Comments

Conceivably, could we see cleave and overload on the same card?

Such a thing is possible. The trick is finding a good design.

Gatherer Errors Reporting

New 19 May 2022 Asked by radiant-galvanisation 33 Comments

Maro, I'm not sure who to contact regarding Gatherer errors, but currently the Oracle text for cards with Cleave does not display the square brackets. Is there a specific email address I should send an error report to regarding this?

I’ll pass along the note.

Cleave's Fit With Brokers

New 11 Apr 2022 Asked by shm128iii 38 Comments

"[Cleave] didn't fit nearly with any of the families." I could see it fitting the Brokers pretty well, since messing with the wording/rulings of cards seems pretty in-character for the lawyer-focused Family. Admittedly, though, that's mostly from a flavor perspective - it might not have been a good fit for the set mechanically.

It was not. Faction sets need the faction keywords to be mechanically synergize.

Cleave Mechanic In New Capenna

New 11 Apr 2022 Asked by invisiblejackwagon-deactivated2 24 Comments

Now that all the mechanics were revealed for the families in New Capenna. Why was it that cleave was used for Innistrad instead of New Capenna?

It didn’t fit nearly with any of the families.

Clarifying Innistrad Spoilers

New 27 Mar 2022 Asked by unknown-destination 72 Comments

In your spoilers for the new Innistrad sets, you mentioned removal for something that hadn't been able to be removed before, a lot of players speculated this meant emblem removal, but now looking back at them there doesn't seem to be any unique removal. Did it get cut from final production? I'm very confused.

You removed rules text with the cleave mechanic.

Mechanics During Set Vision

New 10 Mar 2022 Asked by armeizh 33 Comments

Hi Mark, how many mechanics get thrown out during set vision/design because they look fitting, but upon filling the set the team realises there just isn't enough design space within it? Do mechanics sometimes get "downgraded" from a main one to something closer to Cleave in VOW in terms of volume becasue of that?

The mechanics that make it to print are usually a small percentage of the ones that get explored in exploratory design and the beginning of vision design. Mechanics can get downgraded in size if there’s not enough room and there’s a way to downgrade them. I use “downgrade” to mean less in size, not in power or pop.

Cleave on Storm Scale

New 12 Feb 2022 Asked by gteeg 38 Comments

Now that VOW has run it’s course, where is cleave on the storm scale? I personally wouldn’t mind if it was a one and done mechanic.

I think it could make sense thematically in the right set. It’s probably currently a 7.

Cleave Rule Misprint

New 28 Nov 2021 Asked by lgosvse 57 Comments

Have the rules managers (Matt, Eli, Jess, etc.) been informed of the extra "f" that was placed in the Comprehensive Rules for cleave?

I think the Rules manager are, very slowly, revealing a secret message in the Comprehensive Rules.
