Lightning Bolt's Chance in Standard

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by megaquestionsformark 27 Comments

With the caveat that you're not a power level guy, what's your gut feel on Lightning Bolt having another chance in Standard now the format has more sets and more power generally?

I’m skeptical. It really warps the environment.

Elspeth Tirel Appreciation

New 20 Dec 2022 Asked by petruscaex 43 Comments

Just wanted to say that I started playing Magic in 2012 with a monoWhite deck, and one year later I got to know the character that would become my favorite: Elspeth Tirel, at that time The Sun's Champion. I was amazed with her story and mourned her death, but seeing her getting another chance to shine and becoming such a central character in this story makes me really happy. I don't know if she'll live or die, but I'm sure she will give Phyrexia a hell of a fight and I'm totally on board for that!

Kamigawa Return Expectations

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by wolfthebard 97 Comments

Hey Mark, I've been seeing you get a lot of "passionate responses" to the Kamigawa reveal. Ehile the OG Kamigawa sets came out before I started playing MtG, they were the driving force as to why I started playing. Knowing that the set wasn't the best selling/ received well at the time. I didn't think we'd return. Tuesdays announcement brought me joy. I understand that some of the things that made me love Kamigawa, might not return, and while that will upset me. I understand. I cannot wait for that spoiler season to start. Thank you for giving Kamigawa another chance!
Also, can we get a hint if a certain "Good boy" will be referenced?

We don’t return to worlds without trying to make fans of the world happy. I’m not saying we always succeed on every vector, but a lot of Kamigawa love was put into Neon Dynasty.

Unused Mechanic Fate

New 20 Sep 2018 Asked by asthner-blog 33 Comments

Hi! There’s something that’s been bugging me for some time. Does the fact that an unused mechanic been revealed mean that it will never be used? In other words – is the fact that the public knows about an unused ability (like Disguise) factor in ANY way in the decision whether to give that mechanic another chance in design?

If I’m very confident we’ll use a mechanic, I’m less likely to reveal it. Me revealing it doesn’t prevent it from ever getting used though.

Planeswalker Fates

Maro, how come Teferi is gaining another chance to use his spark, and my favourite plenswalker of all times Venser is dead for good? I'm just sad now :(

Terferi lost his spark. Venser died. One is easier to undo.

Jund Werewolves Concept

New 23 Oct 2017 Asked by furnacelayer 23 Comments

Could Jund werewolves also be an option? I could see G/B werewolves being an issue for people who want to play them together with the Innistrad ones, and a Jund colored werewolf would give you another chance to make a werewolf tribal commander that people expect in more inclusive colors.

It’s tricky without a bunch of extra work to do tri-color tribes.

Ludevic Design Issue

New 27 Oct 2016 Asked by thornthallid 216 Comments

Whilst not all legends should be a top-down design, would you agree that not making Ludevic top-down was a mistake?

Here’s the problem. We made the Partner mechanic which required a lot of mechanical structure. That meant the cards were designed bottom up and not top down. The cards had to be legendary because of the requirement to be commanders, so we had two options: Make up completely new characters or try to see if we could find existing characters that hadn’t yet gotten a card that made some sense with the existing designs.Previous Commander products told us players really like when we reference existing characters, so we set out to try and match characters to the designed cards. This is tricky as you don’t have the fine control you have with top down designs.Should we have saved any characters until we could have done them as top down designs? Maybe. There’s a strong case that Ludevic might have been one in that category. But I imagine a parallel world where we chose to do less existing characters so we could save them for a future top down design, and people are complaining that we didn’t have enough “known” legendary characters.“Why haven’t you done __________ ?” Is a very common question here. If we had saved Ludevic for a future time, that might be many years from now.Designing Magic is hard because so many people want different things and trying to juggle them all so you make as many people as happy as you can is difficult. I hear that many of you Imagined Ludevic as being a top down design and maybe with 20/20 hindsight, that would have been the correct call, but we didn’t have that hindsight when we’re making things.Players had said they wanted a Ludevic card and we had an opportunity to make one, and we knew another chance was most likely years away, so we took the opportunity. The reason I constantly seek feedback is so we can learn. If we did something differently than you wanted us to, tell me, so I can get a sense when we made a mistake (or did something correct) and can adjust accordingly in the future.

Cuisine Preferences Joke

If you'd like to give leeks another chance, I have a great recipe for stir fried pork and leeks in a chili garlic sauce.

I’m not sure mixing my dislike of fruits and vegetables with my dislike of spicy foods is going to work out. : )

YMTC Results Analysis

New 28 May 2013 Asked by skyrider19 4 Comments

So what are your thoughts about the YMTC results so far?

I’m always interested to see what the public chooses when given decisions. I’m using YMTC as another chance to learn about our audience. I’m not sure quite what we’ve learned yet as I haven’t had the time to examine the results more closely.

Impact of Bad Set

New 28 May 2012 Asked by semiautomagic 3 Comments

Do you think that one bad set could spell the end of MtG?

Not that I believe our current systems would allow a truly bad set, but no. Magic has enough inertia and players that many players would give us another chance before checking out. That doesn’t mean, by the way, that we should ever make a bad set. While I don’t think it would kill the game, it is the first step in the series of events that could kill it.
