Magic Couples Red Connection

Hi Mark! My wife and I both play Magic and today is are our ninth wedding anniversary. That got me thinking... Is it any coincidence that the three creature cards that represent married couples (Tibor and Lumia, Anax and Cymede, and Pia and Kiran Nalaar) all have red in their color identities?

Red is the color of emotion which includes Love. : )

Dual Legends Future

There are 2 "dual legends" (correct me if I'm wrong) that have ever been printed: Anax and Cymede, Tibor and Lumia. Is there a reason there aren't more of those? Is there any chance we'll see more of those in the future?

It’s something the creative team likes to do sparingly. I’m pretty sure though we’ll see more in the future.

I think Anax and Cymede should be separate legendary creature cards. What's the reason you guys make the couple as a single legendary creature card?

Because we only had one slot for a red/white legendary creature and we thought having a couple would be a cool thing we could do.

Multi-Person Cards

How do you feel about cards like Anax and Cymede that depict multiple persons as one creature?

I think a little is okay but it should be the exception.

Star-Crossed Legends

Looking at Anax and Cymede, did you ever consider making them two separate legendaries that referenced each other? It seems like there would be some decent design space around the archetype of star-crossed lovers.

The set already has more legendary creatures than a normal set so I’m not sure we would want to up the number by one.

Heroic Mechanic Praise

I also picked up Humans vs Monsters, and I've been playing the humans deck. Anax and Cymede have closed out the game whenever they have shown up. Heroic plays awesomely!

Template Choices

Why did you make the wording for Anax and Cymede "Whenever you cast a spell that targets ~" instead of "Whenever ~ becomes the target of a spell you control"?

Asking me about templating choices is like asking me about banana recipes. You aren’t going to get a satisfying answer. : )

Color Pie Abilities

While I understand that red can have trample, but I dont think it matches RW creatures like Anax and Cymede. Do you think this is ok in color pie? For example trample should be in red or redgreen but not in redwhite. Same as doublestrike could be in RW but not RG.

As long as the color has the ability primary or secondary, it’s okay for it to be the color to bring it to a multicolor card.

Heroic versus Radiance

So is Heroic (eg, on Anax and Cymede from Heroes vs. Monsters) a fixed/improved version of Radiance?

No, radiance is about changing the number of targets. Heroic is about targetting as a trigger. Both involve targetting but that’s about it. Heroic is the new hero mechanic not the tweaked mechanic (which is connected to the gods not heroes by the way).
