About Richard Garfield, Silver-bordered Cards

New 06 Jul 2021 Asked by theblocknessmonster 36 Comments

Question about Richard Garfield, PhD: Silver-bordered cards care about the physical card itself, not the card as a rules object (they can, for example, care about art). If I play a Sol Ring as a copy of Aether Vial, does the card on the battlefield have the art of Sol Ring or Vial, and if it's Vial, do I choose the specific printing whose characteristics it copies? And if it keeps the same art, does it also retain its collector number and other un-important characteristics?

You need to pick a particular printing of the card and it copies all aspects of that card.

Understanding Rarity Shifts

The rarity questions were ones that a lot of people missed so it seems like a great chance for you to explain the thought processes behind rarity shifting cards, as it would mean even WOTC got the rarity wrong the first time. Could you go into detail on the rarity shifts for some cards, such as Chalice of the Void or Aether Vial, so future potential designers know how to correctly apply rarities to cards?

In two weeks, I have a column all about rarities where I go into the topic in detail.

Angus McKenzie Trivia

Today is my birthday (May 12). Could I get some trivia on Angus McKenzie or Aether Vial?

Angus McKenzie is a great example of the inconsistency of templates in the early days. He basically Fogs yet the text is nothing like Fog which preexisting it.Happy Birthday!

AE Ligature Errata

New 19 Oct 2016 Asked by tomblelog 11 Comments

The AE ligature was errata'd to the individual letters, and this is reflected in the card text on Gatherer. However, the card NAMES, aside from new cards and recent reprints like Aether Vial, all still use the ligature in Gatherer even though their card text doesn't anymore. Is there a reason for this?

It just hasn’t been updated yet.

Æther Vial Spelling

New 15 Sep 2016 Asked by gujamin 42 Comments

Why in MASTERPIECE SERIES: KALADESH INVENTIONS is Æther Vial spelled Aether Vial? Is that technically the same card since it's a different spelling?

The ligature Æ has been errataed on all cards to Ae.

Here’s a trivia question. What Weatherlight crew member interacts in the story with the Sliver Queen?Karn. She’s guarding the Legacy artifacts. Karn convinces her that the Legacy artifacts are to him what the slivers are to her and she lets him take them.Happy Birthday!

Poison's Return

New 22 Jun 2013 Asked by willardhwright 16 Comments

I loved poison please don't let it be another 14 before it comes back. Also I drafted MM yesterday some of the best times I had. (Doubling season Aether vial ftw)

Poison did do well in all our metrics to not come back for fourteen years. (And yes, a smaller percentage hates it, I know.) NOTE: When I said “poison” I meant “infect”.

Aether Vial Hypothetical

New 29 Mar 2012 Asked by readincomics 9 Comments

If each player started each game with an Aether Vial in play, would that make the game better or worse? A lot of people feel that the common occurrence of land flood/short is a major game design flaw.

I will say this until I’m blue in the face and history has shown that few will listen. The mana system including the mana flooding and mana screw is one of the three most important parts of Magic as a game (along with the concept of the trading card game and the color wheel). I call the three the Golden Trifecta - as those were the three great advances Richard Garfield created when he made Magic.
