Squirrels in Sets

New 23 May 2015 Asked by nobthehobbit 25 Comments

"I’ve tried for years and years to get Squirrels back into normal expansions with no luck." Acorn Catapult was in the original Commander decks, so maybe you'd have better luck if you worked on a supplemental product?

That’s why I said normal. Supplemental sets are where Squirrels are most likely.

Mishra's Toy Factory Mechanics

So even though Acorn Catapult doesn't immediately generate tokens upon coming into play, Mishra's Toy Factory can still be used to cast it? And can Mishra's Toy Factory be used to cast Myr Battlesphere (or, say, an Equipment with Living weapon) if there's a Torpor Orb or Hushwing Gryff in play? Can Mishra's Toy Factory be used to cast any creature if Genesis Chamber is in play?

Oops. I confused two cards. You can use Mishra’s Factory to activate Acorn Catapult or to cast Acorn Harvest. You may not use it to cast Acorn Catapult as it does not directly create tokens when cast.

Mishra's Toy Factory Query

Oh Silver-Bordered Rules Master, inquiring minds want to know about Mishra's Toy Factory (Tap: Add 3 to your mana pool. Spend this mana only on spells or abilities that put tokens onto the battlefield). Does it cast Myr Battlesphere? What about Acorn Catapult?

Yes and yes. If the spell’s casting results in tokens, you’re good to go.

Joy for Acorn Catapult

How happy were you to see Acorn Catapult get printed? First squirrel card in years.

I am always happy to see a squirrel card.

Nods to Squirrels

Is Swarmyard the most recent nod to squirrels in an actual expansion? (I realize that Acorn Catapult came later, but it was in a standalone product.)

I believe it’s the most recent.

Squirrel Set Possibility

New 09 Nov 2013 Asked by spacejawa 18 Comments

How much player demand would be required for Squirrels to 'pull a merfolk' and return to the game, if even for only a single set?

Squirrels occasionally poke their head in a supplemental set (for example Acorn Catapult), but I do not expect to see them in a normal set anytime soon.

Squirrels in Cards

Wait a minute, if creative has so much problems with Squirrels, how did Acorn Catapult end up as it did?

The Creative Team’s squirrel compromise is that they allow a few squirrel cards in supplemental products.

Squirrel Cards Explanation

If Creative is so opposed to seeing Squirrels in the game, how did Acorn Catapult get by them?

The creative team understands there’s a demand for squirrel cards and found a place for them in a supplemental product.  In all this squirrel talk I feel I might have portrayed the creative team in the wrong light. They are a group of dedicated, talented and passionate people. They have been doing wonderful work for years and a lot of what has made Magic shine these last few years has been their hard work. While I might disagree with them on squirrels, I am wholeheartedly a fan of what they do and Magic is a much better game for that work.

Squirrel Card Chances

Since creative seems dead set against mass producing squirrels, what is the Storm Scale chance of seeing even just one new squirrel card?

Our best chances for squirrels are supplemental products. That’s where Acorn Catapult ended up.

Acorn Catapult Creation

Who did Acorn Catapult and did it ever get past the creative department?

Because it was in a supplementary product and that’s where creative allows us a little more leeway. They did sign off on Acorn Catapult.
