Wrexial, the Risen Deep

Opinions on Copy Effects

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by clevibert 63 Comments

To contrast the opinion that a previous asker had about magic making too many doppelgangers, I really like the effect and don't feel it to be over powered.
When I started playing magic, around M13, I was in college and didn't have much disposable income. It seemed like the "cheap" cards I could afford were all clone type cards and cards that could cast my opponents instants and sorceries. I ended up getting so many cards I made a Wrexial, the risen deep EDH deck. I would commonly get asked "How good is your deck?" My reply was always, "I don't know, how good is YOUR deck?" It carried me a good long time and provided lots of fun for myself as I was trying to figure out how to essentially win with their deck and a fun challenge for my friends as they had to play around their own cards.
TLDR: please don't change how many doppelganger/copy style cards you're creating.

How do others feel about cards that copy the opponent’s cards?

Worldwake Card Grouping Trivia

New 26 Oct 2021 Asked by aoliitis 33 Comments

Regarding Whales vs. Krackens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents. The first card to group them was Quest for Ula's Temple in Worldwake - which only had one kracken: Wrexial, the Risen Deep. Zendikar had 1 Krakens, 1 Octopus and 1 Serpent, but still no Leviathans. However, at the time of Worldwake's printing no whales had been printed since Great Whale in Urza's Saga nearly 12 years prior whereas Alara block had 3 Leviathans (and another was coming in M11).

Legendary Status Explained

New 11 Jul 2015 Asked by hattsoff 27 Comments

Obviously, many creatures are made legendary due to their importance in the story. But what about those who we know close to nothing about lore-wise (some recent-ish examples that come to mind are Hythonia the Cruel; King Macar, the Gold-Cursed; Thada Adel, Acquisitor; Wrexial, the Risen Deep, etc.). Are those cards made legendary just because of the "coolness factor?"

They’re made legendary because they’re unique characters.

Personal Agenda Designs

New 12 Aug 2012 Asked by adamrinsky 8 Comments

I saw Ken Nagel speaking at a panel about designing Wrexial, the Risen Deep because he was sick of people using Time Stretch in EDH and wanted to make himself a commander that would punish people for doing that. Stories like that make me smile. Have you ever designed a card to fulfill such a specific personal agenda?

Of course. I printed Donate so my “give my opponent’s things that will kill them” deck could get better. Okay, that one didn’t work out so well.
