Time Spiral

Design of Norin and Saltskitter

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by fencepostmagpie 10 Comments

Norin the Wary from Time Spiral and Saltskitter from Future Sight have incredibly similar designs that we haven't seen anywhere else in Magic. Do you know if those designs being in the same block was a coincidence, or is there a story there? Thanks Mark!

I designed both, so there’s a chance they’re subconsciously connected. Norin the Wary was a top-down design to match the character. Saltskitter was just me making something that felt weird.

Potential Return of Future Sight Frame

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by jaqeax 6 Comments

I've seen you asked about this a lot, but do you project us ever seeing the Future Sight frame ever again? I love how unique it was and is, and I am honestly surprised MH3 didn't have a frame treatment for it, given that Modern Horizons as a concept was inspired by Time Spiral block.

I get asked about it often. We would have to find the right place to use it, but I won’t say it couldn’t happen.

Comparing Fun in Draft Sets

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 1 Comments

This is one of those questions that might be impossible to answer. Other than power level, why is one set's draft environment more fun than another set's? Take MH3, which I've enjoyed more than OTJ, which I liked more than MKM (although I enjoyed both). I think this is a common sentiment. Did MH3 get more time or resources than the other two? Is it just luck of the draw in a "sometimes they hit, sometimes, they don't" way? When an MKM is going out the door, do y'all know it's not quite as fun?

Modern Horizon sets are of a higher complexity, and have a strong nostalgia element, so appeal strongly to players that enjoy that. We learned from Time Spiral block that it’s a minority, so it’s not something we do in premier sets, but a great choice for a supplemental one.We ship every set with the goal of it being as fun as possible, knowing that different sets will appeal more to different players. We just try to mix it up, so everyone gets sets that maximize their enjoyment.

Relentless Text Effects

New 27 May 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 9 Comments

if/when: a legendary creature that gives another card the relentless text (i.e. you can have any number of storm crows in your deck)?

If. We explored cards that alter deck restrictions back in Time Spiral and organized play begged us not to do them as they cause all types of chaos in tournaments. Players in tournaments need to be able to monitor if their opponent has an illegal deck, and the only way to double check with cards such as you suggested is to have constant judge checks during play.

Complexity in Design

New 23 May 2024 Asked by princevogelfrei 5 Comments

"The rise of Commander and the importance of larger formats has shifted how we think about complexity."Is this explained in more detail anywhere? MtG as a whole seems much more complex now. Timespiral is one of my favorite sets, but the complaint about it was that it was too complex, had too many mechanics. Now we have mechanics that are so complex they can't be explained on a card (ring tempts, initiative), more things to track (poison,energy,day/night) and new cards with varying format legality

There were more mechanics in Time Spiral block than existed in Magic before Time Spiral block. Another way to look at it is the difference between the complexity of a Modern Horizons set and a premier set. Yes, the average premier set is higher than they once were, but nowhere close to Time Spiral block.

Sales vs. Happiness

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by sobek16 40 Comments

Curious you said sales almost always go along with consumer happiness can you think of an example of when they did not?

I add the word “almost”, so if the exception comes up I didn’t misspeak. I don’t know of a set where sales did poorly, but market research showed players were overall happy. The closest are sets where the enfranchised players really liked it, but the rest of the playbase did not. Time Spiral block is an example of this.

No Mana Cost Cards

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by theverdantchef 29 Comments

In Hindsight, do you think printing the "no mana cost" cards from Time Spiral were a mistake? Why were these not simply given expensive mana costs instead?

I do not consider it a mistake.

Special Rarity Cards

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 22 Comments

Are the Prismatic Piper and the Time shifted cards from Time Spiral the only cards from packs with a special rarity?

It depends how you define “special rarity”? Under most definitions, no, there are others.

Product Rarity Concern

New 26 Jan 2024 Asked by toppart 27 Comments

Follow up on another question-marks topic. Could non randomized products that have exclusive cards (like commander pre-cons) get their own rarity? Like maybe the purple used on the time-shifted reprints got in Time Spiral.

Being that there are cards and formats that care, we want cards to have actual rarities.

Sliver Mechanic Evolution

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by rwssr 27 Comments

Fear was still being used when the Time Spiral sets were being printed, why wasn’t fear used in Slivers?! Intimidate was still in use in M15, why wasn’t there a intimidate Sliver?

Because we were souring on the mechanics.

Holy Nimbus Cycle

New 05 Jan 2024 Asked by kallixti 30 Comments

Will you ever finish the Holy Nimbus vertical cycle? We got the common in Legends and the uncommon in Time Spiral, but are still waiting for the rare/mythic.

It might be a while as the cards can cause the game to draw.

Time Spiral-like Sets

New 29 Dec 2023 Asked by misenaive-blog 28 Comments

Time Spiral block is one of my favorite things to ever happen in MTG, is it possible we could get something similar in a Standard set at some point in the distant future?

Modern Horizons was specifically created to have a place for Time Spiral-like sets. It’s too much for premier sets.

Modern Cards Frame Update

New 28 Dec 2023 Asked by baurpower 48 Comments

Everyone is out here talking about old frame printings of modern cards, but as someone with no particular affinity for the old frames, I'd like to point out that there are still a bunch of Modern-legal cards with no modern frame printing (i.e., cards on the Time Spiral bonus sheet with no subsequent reprintings). Is this list ever looked at by Wizards as something to clean up?

It is. The vast majority of the cards that see play in Modern should eventually get reprinted in a modern frame.

Favorite Card Insights

New 14 Dec 2023 Asked by shadowkinggray 42 Comments

Hello Mark. I redeemed my coveted birthday rite several days ago, but it seems to have gotten caught up in the shuffle. I figured I wouldn't submit it on my birthday, which was the 6th, because a lot was going on then in Magic. My query was for any interesting tidbit about my favorite card in the game, Malefic Scythe from M21, and, provided you had nothing about it, instead the card that got me into the game, Errant Ephemeron from Time Spiral. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

When we first designed suspend creatures, we started with familiar vanilla and French vanilla ones. Errant Ephemeron was Air Elemental, and one of the first ones we designed. Happy Belated Birthday!

Time Spiral Lands Info

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by archfiend487-blog 25 Comments

Hi Mark,Cashing in my Birthday Trivia to find out more about my favourite cycle of lands; The Time Spiral Storage Lands. What can you tell me about them?

The Time Spiral storage lands were an attempt to give players access to colored mana, but at a rate that was slower than traditional dual land. That allows us to let it enter the battlefield untapped. We did try vanishing lands before that (aka dual lands that enter the battlefield untapped but only stick around for three turns), but they didn’t play well.Happy Birthday!

Future of Spellshapers

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by thewonko 37 Comments

If or When: More Spellshapers? We got a throwback reference on the back side of Invasion of Mercadia, but there've been so many new spells to shape since Time Spiral block that surely there's room for more

As a larger mechanic in a premier set? If.As a one-of card in a supplemental set? When.

Special Sheet Legality

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by fencerkid 32 Comments

So I adored the time spiral bonus sheet adding cards into that standard environment (and therefore other formats, like Lord of Atlantis). How likely can we get a special sheet and have the cards legal in the format again?

Unlikely, as we like to use the bonus sheet to get desired reprints into the set. A required Standard legality would significantly limit our reprint options.

Norin the Wary Trivia

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by kreetn 46 Comments

It’s my birthday! Can I have some trivia on Norin the Wary, the best creature ever printed?
Also please let the arena team know that I’d love to see him there ❤️

In Time Spiral, I liked the idea that we made some legendary creatures that had only been referenced in flavor text. The two I knew we had to do was Saffi Eriksdotter and Norin the Wary. The key to Norin’s design was figuring out how to capture running away.Happy Birthday!

Time Spiral Preference

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by danflapjax 19 Comments

If you hadn't been using the 3-set block structure at the time, which set of the Time Spiral block would you choose to have been made instead of all three?

Probably Time Spiral. It stands the most alone.

Magic's Evolution

New 24 Sep 2023 Asked by yuleooze 31 Comments

What happens if Time Spiral block was not looked at as a mistake laden mess? Do you think that the Magic made in the first 15 years would be sustainable (not more successful, just able to tread water) without the design and goal changes that have happened in the latter 15? I miss pre audience fragmentation Magic.

The second half of Magic’s 30 years has made a lot of important changes. Stopping innovation at fifteen years doesn’t feel like it would be good for a game whose key identity is constant evolution. Also, Magic has always had distinct audiences. Them being more invisible doesn’t mean they weren’t there.
