The Binding of the Titans

Green Cards' Symmetrical Milling Ability

New 26 Sep 2021 Asked by monstrumonium 56 Comments

Hey Mark, I was searching to see if any green cards milled the opponent, and I noticed that the only one yet is The Binding of the Titans saga from Theros Beyond Death. Do you know why it made it to print milling the opponent, and/or how much of a bend is symmetrical milling for green?

Green can self mill itself where it triggers based on what is milled. The Binding of the Titans extended that effect to all players. It’s a decent bend, but not a break. It’s not something I expect to see often in green, probably only in the occasional graveyard-focused set.

Saga Mechanic Utilization

In the today's Making Magic article, you mentioned that one of the reasons saga won't be evergreen is that they "require worlds with stories that the audience knows." While I am sure that makes sagas easier to design in a set, aren't sagas capable of depicting new stories as well? In TBD a few sagas depict stories that did not exist before the set released, such as The Binding of the Titans and Elspeth Conquers Death.

We can do a little works building with them, but they work best when playing into known stories.

Titan Count Query

Only two titans? Unless I'm mistaken, The Binding of the Titans depicts three. Is one of them gone for good? Or perhaps did it escape long ago...?

Two titans show up as cards. That’s not all the titans that exist.

Mythological Concerns

The thing I loved about Theros and Amonkhet was that they were sets with an obvious inspiration but twisted in such a way that none of the stories and tropes exaclty matched what we knew from the inspiration. What worries me about The Binding of the Titans is that we are literally about to delve right into greek mythology. Is my concern justified?

Just like we did our take on Gods, we’re doing our take on titans.

Green's Color Pie Expansion

Wow, all three chapters in The Binding of the Titans used to be in black's slice of the color pie, great to see green has acquired those tools as well.

Self milling is in green’s color pie. Having it effect everyone is a bend.Exiling card’s from graveyards is primary in black, but is secondary in green.Green is primary in regrowthing (getting any card back from the graveyard to their hand). Yes, black can get back creatures, but not land.
