Addressing Green Power

New 28 Aug 2016 Asked by tinytim93-blog-blog 44 Comments

FYI, a previous ask claimed a dearth in green power, yet green has two incredible man lands (Hissing Quagmire and Lumbering Falls), mid range tokens (Ishkanah), a too powerful for standard spell (Collected Company), and arguably the best damn creature in standard which also synergizes with the aforementioned man lands (Sylvan Advocate) just to name a few things.

My point exactly. : )

Power vs Play

I am a little confused about your list. Mainly because some of your cards are technically spells, but the most played cards in standard are all creatures by a pretty big margin minus company and command. Foe example, Sylvan Advocate is in 50% of placing decks.

My list was “most powerful” not “most played”.

Meta Design Shift

Since the direction of design has seemingly changed to be significantly less focused on spells, we've seen blue and red die off as colors in standard. Do you think this design change is incorrect seeing what has happened, or do you plan to try and work blue and red into the new midrange metas?

Less focused on spells? Let’s check the Standard metagame. Here are the five current most powerful cards: (yes, I had some help compiling this list)Collected CompanyAvacynSylvan AdvocateLanguishDromoka’s CommandTwo of them are creatures.*Three* of them are spells.Yes, the pendulum swings making certain colors stronger and weaker in the metagame, but it’s not because we’re unwilling to make powerful spells.

Vigilance in Green

Is Vigilance now a green ability? Arline Kord and Sylvan Advocate both feature it prominently recently.

Vigilance is secondary in Green. It has been for a while.

Power Creep Concerns

You often talk about power creep as a long-term threat to the health of the game. But when you print a card like Sylvan Advocate-- a 2/3 vigilance with the potential to get even bigger assuming the game lasts beyond turn eight or so-- at the same cost as Grizzly Bears, I can't help but wonder what Wizards is thinking.

Grizzly Bears is far from a powerful card. It might actually be the card we’ve obsoleted the most times in the history of Magic.
