Issues with Unexilable Template

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by aalgot 11 Comments

There’s no clean way to template [unexilable], and it doesn’t happen enough that we need a whole keyword. Why can’t you just write “can’t be exiled”

We can, but I believe there are effects you would expect it to stop that it doesn’t.

Gotcha Mechanic Miss

New 15 Sep 2023 Asked by tmdoublezero 27 Comments

Has a non-verbal gotcha (like "stop that!") style card been in the files of unstable or unfinity at some point? or did gotcha result in such a failure that you all stayed clear of anything similar?

We’ve done no work to recreate gotcha. It was a big miss.

Accessibility in Un Sets

New 31 Jul 2023 Asked by transbrady1 33 Comments

Hey Mark! I have asked this once or twice before (over a longish time), but I don't think it's been answered before, so I'll try asking it differently. I know accessibility is a fact when designing main set mechanics, but how does that apply to Un sets? I have tourrettes syndrome, and nothing feels worse than playing against the card "stop that" or I remember there was a card that tapped a creature when you said a phrase, but at the prerelease for that unset one of my opponents was deaf. And past that, how does accessibility factor into card design?

I did answer your question in a rather long post. If you scroll back to the last time you asked it, you can see my response. I’m waiting at the airport for my flight, so I don’t have the ability to rewrite it. Sorry.

Accessibility in Un Sets

New 14 Jul 2023 Asked by fedorastorm 67 Comments

Hey Mark! I was wondering, even in Un sets, how is accessibility taken into account? I personally have Tourette's and we were playing a cube with a ton of Un Cards, and the card "Stop That" has lead to probably the worst feels bad I have ever had in a game of magic, so much so that I had to leave the building. And the phrase "your game mechanic doesn't work because I happen to have a disability" also isn't an especially good feeling from either end of the table.

We have 28,000+ cards with a giant swath of different kinds of designs. It’s a virtual impossibility to making every card accessible to everyone. Some players have physical limitations. Others mental limitations. Others have struggles with processing certain types of information. Still others have negatives associations with certain flavor aspects. If we stopped making every card that any player had problems with, we wouldn’t have any cards. The issue is working with your play group to accommodate whatever your personal issues are. For example, if I were running a tournament with you as a participant, I would just rule you immune to the effects of Stop That.

Force of Will Name

Howdy Mark! Could you tell the Force of Will play test name story?

At different times, “Gorilla, Gorilla, Gorilla, Gorilla, Stop That” and “Stop Spell”.

Non-verbal Gotcha Triggers

New 15 Jul 2022 Asked by whispytings 30 Comments

If/when: non-verbal Gotcha triggers. Stuff mainly in the vein of Stop That

If. Gotcha was a huge mistake, and it wasn’t just because the triggers were mainly verbal.

Complexity Creep Management

New 05 Sep 2019 Asked by frozentoday 21 Comments

As the game ages and new sets come out, more and more mechanics are added to the game, causing the overall complexity of older formats to rise over time. Do you ever invision a time where to cut back on complexity creep, you need to start designing sets with exclusively returning mechanics?

Formats with large amount of sets in them are going to rise in complexity. Nothing can stop that. We’ll make sure to also have formats that are smaller and don’t require you knowing 20,000 plus cards. As I always say, we try not to hold the future of the game hostage to its past.

Dragon Art Feedback

New 12 Oct 2018 Asked by wassail 88 Comments

Hi Mark. I've noticed that recently the art has been depicting important dragons like Nicol Bolas and Niv Mizzet with weird goblin-y humanoid faces instead of traditional dragon faces. Is there any way you could put in my request to stop that?

I talked with our art directors about this. When you paint a dragon from the front straight on, it collapses the snout and makes the face look flatter. The dragons facial structure isn’t changing, it’s just a perspective choice of the artists.

EDH Game Politics

New 24 Aug 2018 Asked by jugglervr 64 Comments

Why do you always play EDH with political groups? My commander games are quite a-political. Very rarely people will make deals about not being attacked but most players I know (my shop hosts about 75 semi-regulars) hold things close to the vest and only bring politics in when there's someone who's very obviously about to take over the game "we need to stop that or they'll win". EDH is great without the politics.

Any game where there are more than two people and each person free to choose which others players to help or hurt is political.

Rules Interpretation Issue

New 20 Aug 2018 Asked by suggested-name-nick 33 Comments

I had an argument with a friend. He believed that R&D's secret lair prevents you from tapping basics as they have no text. However he also believed that he could cast his player reward Remove Soul to counter my Llanowar Elves. Who is right?

Basic lands being able to tap for color is baked into their rules and definition. R&D Secret Lair doesn’t stop that.

Learning from Dominaria Success

New 10 Apr 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 43 Comments

Dominaria has received apparently universal acclaim so far, a success that - if reflected in sales - I'd expect Wizards to try and emulate going forward. Yet when asked about popular elements such as the desirable reprints and interesting, complex designs at uncommon your response has amounted to "Don't get used to it". If Dominaria is successful, might Wizards be open to re-evaluating its approach to popular elements like this and potentially do more of it in future?

The goal of each set is to bend things towards what that set is about. If we don’t stop that to bend other sets in other directions, it would get super complicated.

Nonverbal Card Opinions

How do you feel about the nonverbal gotcha cards, "Stop That" & "Cardpekcer"?

They’re better but they still require pulling your focus rather than just having fun.

Doubling Effects

New 03 Jun 2017 Asked by astralwizard85 43 Comments

If someone in R&D were to create a card that said, "If an effect were to cause something to be doubled, prevent the doubling from occurring", would you do anything to stop that card from seeing print?

Perhaps I already have. : )It’s a pretty situational effect though so it would have trouble not getting cut along the way.

Card Flicking Reference

Is it possible in silver border to reference players flicking their cards?

We already did it on an Unhinged card called Stop That.

Un-set Interaction Rules

New 26 Aug 2016 Asked by garyoakriginal 15 Comments

Just wanted to say thanks for everything you do to make magic be so amazing! I have an Un-set question. If someone is flicking their cards, can I in response cast Stop that, have the gotcha trigger resolve , and cast it again?

The Gotcha doesn’t work until the card is in the graveyard so you’re giving your opponent a big warning to stop flicking. If they continue once the spell resolves and goes to the graveyard, then you can call “Gotcha!” on them.

Green in BFZ

New 10 Apr 2016 Asked by thepinkbattery 16 Comments

It's widely thought that green is below average power level in triple bfz. What could you do as lead designer to stop that from happening? Or is that all development?

It’s development.

Mental Misstep Query

im a fairly new player and i was searching on gatherer through the cards that cost phyrexian mana and i came across mental misstep, what was the thinking behind the card?

I tried to stop that card and failed. I think the thought behind it was development trying to make an exciting Phyrexian mana card.

Prerelease Card Secrecy

New 21 Sep 2014 Asked by wildfire149 95 Comments

When you and others at Wotc keep saying how you shouldn't keep information away from us the fans what was the rational behind not telling us what the prerelease cards were?

People were complaining that players were pre-deciding prerelease box choices based on the information of the prerelease cards. One way to stop that was to not tell everyone ahead what the cards were. How did all of you feel about that choice?
