Frozen Solid vs Dwindle

New 27 Mar 2019 Asked by mrfrinkinpuff 39 Comments

A couple of years ago, in your podcast, you mentioned how Frozen Solid (SCG) is a complete break of the color pie. Why is a card like Dwindle (M19) okay, whereas Frozen Solid is not?

Dwindle is a bit of a bend, but the creature’s controller has the choice when the creature dies, not the blue mage.

That’s some good Ooze. : )

Control in Pro Tour

New 23 Dec 2016 Asked by donaldwsrjr-deactivated20190710 19 Comments

A lot of people saying that the control mirror in the Pro Tour doesn't count because the metagame is so different. I'd like to remind them that Jeskai control that got 2nd at an SCG after the PT, UB Metallurgic Summons that lost a win and in at Denver, and Ari Lax’s 12-3 finish at Denver. Control isn’t top tier, but it is still very good.

A good point.

Pro Tour Format

New 31 Jan 2016 Asked by heshotmeagain 22 Comments

Why can't the pro tour be a split constructed format like the scg invitational.

Because we like draft being a part.

Content Creation Limits

New 11 Dec 2015 Asked by generalphilos 56 Comments

Are you allowed to write articles for other websites like Channel Fireball or Star City Games? If not, why?

I am not. Wizards does allow me to do a weekly column, a weekly podcast (with two episodes each week), a daily comic, a daily vote-off, numerous social media interactions and this blog (that just passed 60,000 posts). What more are you looking for me to do? : )

Community Inclusivity Efforts

New 20 Jun 2015 Asked by denvarte-blog 101 Comments

idk if there's much you can do about it seeing as they're a store and all but Today's Star City Games article about Women in Magic made me, and more importantly a lot of women who play magic uncomfortable. I thought you should know as "the mtg community guy"

I very much want to start a dialogue about what the Magic community as a whole can do to make women feel more comfortable. Thirty-eight percent of Magic players are women. I would love if we can start figuring out how to make in store representation closer to the larger number.

Inclusivity Priority

New 20 Jun 2015 Asked by elspethsunschampion 85 Comments

Dear Mark, As a female magic player I was a little concerned and alienated by a recent article on SCG, which seemed to be implying that focusing on female magic players was somehow unfair. But in a game that's so dominated by men (at the professional level), I feel it's important to showcase the achievements of women. Can you reassure me on this front?

Inclusivity both within the game and within the community around the game is a high priority for Wizards.

Metagame Data Release

New 16 Sep 2014 Asked by jeffderek 53 Comments

Can you elaborate on why Wizards has chosen to deliberate restrict the flow of metagame information by not releasing all MTGO results and asking SCG not to release their full metagame results? Is it really that bad if spikes analyze the data?

Yes, it is. The technology exists to process that amount of data. We don’t want formats cracked too fast.

Pre-release Proposal

New 27 Apr 2014 Asked by labratwhite-blog-blog 107 Comments

Hey MARO, just wanted to let you know that at the JOU pre-release yesterday I proposed to my boyfriend of 5 years! I had a playmat commissioned by Liz Nugent of SCG and, in lieu of rings, gave him a Sol Ring and 3 Force of Wills. He said yes. :)

Congratulations!

Legacy Format Support

New 10 Nov 2013 Asked by mazerin 19 Comments

Will Wizards ever make Legacy a supported format? As of now, if SCG didn't support, it would be almost a dead format.

We do support Legacy. It is sanctionable. We have events like Eternal Weekend. What you are asking for is Pro Tour/Grand Prix support. The problem is the limited availability of the cards created an unbalanced playing field for a world-wide supported organized play system.

Writing Magic Articles

New 07 Oct 2013 Asked by gpapyrus 10 Comments

The only circumstances I'd want to see a "How to Write a Magic Article" piece would be if you extolled the virtues of an editor. So many Magic articles are too long, full of fluff, and boring to read. The word-counts on most of the articles I read, especially from third-parties like SCG, are abysmal and un-necessary.

I have much to say on how to make Magic articles better. Having a good editor is bit one piece of advice I’d give.

Black's Competitive Presence

New 28 Jun 2013 Asked by ravenjax 7 Comments

Of the Top 8 at the SCG Open in Philadelphia recently, 6 of the decks had black in them. How exactly is black having trouble showing up in competitive constructed decks? Honestly, I don't understand why it's believed there's a problem with it.

You have to look at the bigger picture than one top eight of one tournament.

Magic Coverage Suggestions

New 26 Jun 2013 Asked by jeffderek 10 Comments

Do you have any responses to John Butler's excellent series on SCG right now about how to fix Magic Coverage? Do you think Wizards will respond at all, maybe even take some of his suggestions?

I think he has a few good ideas mixed in with a lot of misunderstandings about how our Organized Play system works. As with any good ideas put forth by our community, we will take time to absorb it and see if there is a way to use it.

Cards Named After People

New 16 Jun 2013 Asked by teluin 5 Comments

You forgot to mention Timbermare as a card named after someone. I thought that was a really nice move by you guys at WotC and worth sharing. (SCG has an article about it)

There are actually a bunch of cards named after people. The question was about cards named after R&D folk I believe. I forgot Mons, by the way, of Mons’s Goblin Raiders fame. Mons is an old friend of Richard Garfield.

Creatures vs. Spells

New 10 May 2013 Asked by justforaskingmaro 71 Comments

Hello. I've almost sent you (again) snarky comments. However, it does me no good, will not get answered, and is unfair towards you. Instead tell me just how to express in such powerful and potent words that you shall listen, how worried and bored I am at the endless swarms of creatures, sire/voice/ruric-type creatures hosing spells out of the game, and how control based on first FNM's and SCG's is finally out of T2 like combo has been for a long time. Magic with just creat's isn't a smart game..

My normal response to this type of question is to show how noncreature strategies are still valid (two Pro Tour winning decks in the last two years as an example), but I’m going to take a different approach today. You are playing right into the myth that spells are for “smart players” and creatures are for “dumb players”. There are a lot of decisions to be made while playing creatures. In fact, usually there are more decisions to be made when playing creatures and the decisions are far from simple. I remember talking many years ago to a pro player named Dave Price who was famous for playing aggro, beatdown decks. He said that it bothered him that everyone just assumed that beatdown was the easy deck to play. When you play a counter spell, for example, you only make a few decisions - “Do I counter this spell?” yes or no? When you’re playing a creature, you have to be making decisions every turn for many turns based on a wide amount of criteria that keeps changing. Dave felt he won a lot because so many players played creatures so poorly. In short, if you feel Magic with creatures isn’t a smart game, I believe you don’t fully understand the complexity of playing creatures.

Spike's Constructed Dominance

New 17 Feb 2013 Asked by silent7seven 11 Comments

I just want to chime in that I agree Spike does seem to get all the attention when it comes to competitive Constructed. Non-Spikes like competing, too, even if it's just for the social environment. (All my local FNMs are filled with the same decks as one would see in an SCG event or a Pro Tour; it's not a less competitive event in terms of cards played.) It would be nice to see a Standard in which Timmies, Johnnies, and Spikes could all play decks they preferred with equal viability.

There are Timmy and Johnny cards that show up in constructed. Note though that Spike determines what he likes by what is playable in competitive environments, so by definition Spike is always going to have more cards in tournament play.
