Blue Damage Mechanics

Hi Mark, in the color pie can blue still cause damage to players at instant speed like in Vapor Snag?

It’s not. It’s a bend.

I did not, but only because I was busy. I am a fan of Free Comic Day.

Addressing Tamiyo's Timeline

New 17 Dec 2021 Asked by demipizzalover 68 Comments

What about Tamiyo? We've seen her host Ajani at her home on Kamigawa in the present day? I like where Neon seems to be going, but this seems like continuity snag even though our original trip to Kamigawa was far in the past.

On the stream today, I talked about how the world’s core conflict is modernity vs. tradition. Parts of the world are modern, but parts of the world are still pretty ancient. Kamigawa denizens can live in either.

Lessons Mechanic in Commander

New 25 Mar 2021 Asked by evanopheusden 42 Comments

Hi Mark, are there any plans to have Lessons 'work' in Commander?

Here’s what was just posted on Twitter:“For those asking, for Constructed formats that don’t have sideboards (like Commander), you won’t be able to reveal a Lesson card from outside the game but you can still discard and draw as expected. Lessons are still sorceries you can add to your deck like any other card.

As always with Commander, talk with the table and see what will be the most fun for the group you’re playing with. If your playgroup wants to be able to snag Lesson cards with the Learn mechanic, go for it!“

Effects of Dismember and Vapor Snag

Do cards like Dismember and Vapor Snag damage the color pie since any color can play them as long as the player is willing to pay life?

Yes.

Phyrexians Color Pie

New 15 Jun 2016 Asked by extremeconsiderationthemovie 23 Comments

Do you think it's fine if Phyrexians have a tiny amount of color pie breaking like vapor snag and the Praetors?

Color bending? Yes. Color breaking? No.

Life Tax Cycle

New 02 Aug 2015 Asked by shukkets 20 Comments

Can I get some facts on the life tax cycle from New Phyrexia (Vapor Snag & friends)? Is that sort of thing available in every color like cantrips are?

It was a color bend we did to create the feel of New Phyrexia.

Graveyard Count Mechanics

New 28 Dec 2014 Asked by wujo444 26 Comments

Can we see back in standard cards that counts it's copies in graveyard, like Kindle or Rune Snag? I found them very funny to play.

There’s a chance. As the creator of Kindle, I’m a fan of the mechanic.

Color Pie Exception

New 15 Nov 2014 Asked by aazadan 28 Comments

Can you explain why blue got life loss in New Phyrexia? Vapor Snag and Psychic Barrier confuse me from a color pie standpoint.

All the colors got life loss. It was one of the ways we were trying to show Phyrexian influence through all of the colors.

Blue's Conditional Damage

New 29 Dec 2013 Asked by slysilverfoxx-deactivated201404 5 Comments

Do you think we'll ever see cards like Vapor Snag or Psychic Barrier where blue does a thing AND makes the opponent lose a small bit of life?

Only in environments where all five colors do it. It’s not inherently a blue thing.

Kindle Mechanic Return

New 29 Jun 2012 Asked by extremeconsiderationthemovie 2 Comments

Maro 8 ball, will we ever see the "Do X plus copys in the grave yard" mechanic again like on Kindle and Rune Snag? (I dont know what the mechanic is called)

We call it the Kindle mechanic in R&D. Maro Magic 8-Ball says: “It will be back.”

On Vapor Snag

Vapor Snag is very popular right now. Thoughts on it, and the NPH life taxing in general?

I thought it was a simple elegant way to have a Phyrexian feel.

Delver & Snapcaster Power

New 19 Jun 2012 Asked by acclimation6 5 Comments

I think that the "drawback" with Delver & Snapcaster in which you are required to run a lot of Instants/Sorceries isn't necessarily a drawback, given their color. If you look at the decks that rely on Delver(RUG in Legacy & UW in Standard), their game plan is Resolve, Flip, & Protect to victory. Due to Delver being in Blue, it's easy to run Ponder and Brainstorm to find and flip Delver, and then run Vapor Snag and Counters like Leak or Daze/FoW to protect. I think that's the problem people have.

My point isn’t that Snapcaster or Delver of Secrets are the right power level (that’s development’s call to make). I’m saying they do a good job of being blue creatures because their power doesn’t come from brute strength but rather from creating synergy with spells - blue’s thing.

Strictly Better Cards

New 06 Mar 2012 Asked by talinthas 3 Comments

what is your policy on making strictly better cards? It feels like there have been a lot of them these past few blocks--vapor snag vs unsummon, for instance, or the 2/2 zombie that isn't a scathe.

Our policy on strictly betters is pretty simple - we make them. Everything fluctuates in Magic meaning it’s okay for cards to exist that are just better than other cards.
