Mitzi Statue Naming History

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by makesasound 7 Comments

Why is the Shivan Dragon statue named Mitzi?

I don’t know who named her. She’s been called that as long as we’ve had the statue at the offices.

Moving Day Stories

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by dkirzane 10 Comments

We're moving today! Any stories from one of your moves (personal or WotC offices)?

When we moved to Wizards second offices to our third (we’re now in our fourth), we moved across the street. There’s a great picture of us stopping traffic to move Mitzi, the Shivan Dragon statue.Happy Moving Day!

Flavor Words Opinion

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by yuleooze 47 Comments

Long overdue feedback on flavor words in the text box: I'm a huge fan on 'show, dont tell' storytelling and world building so having the card literally tell me what its referencing feels hollow. If Shivan Dragon had the word firebreathing on it, it would feel less rewarding for the first time reader than it was for us. Thanks in advance.

We tend to lean into it more in Universes Beyond than Magic IP sets. The reason is there is language we want to reference to make fans of the property happy, and sometimes flavor words are the best place to do them. There are players on both sides of the issue, so it’s a balance.

Birthday Request Insight

Birthday ask. I cut my teeth on Revised..so anything related to Icy Manipator or Shivan Dragon would be great!

The “Shivan” of Shivan Dragon came from a reference to Shiva of Hindu mythology.Happy Birthday!

Dragon Element in Forgotten Realms

New 07 May 2021 Asked by blaze-1013 66 Comments

"Dragons have been a mainstay of Magic since the days of Shivan Dragon, and you can count on Adventures in the Forgotten Realms to show off plenty from their range of colors in Dungeons & Dragons." Please tell me Forgotten Realms is gonna have a decent dragon element to it? I know it's too early for you to really give info on the set, but it would make me very happy to hear that I can expect many scaly friends in the near future.

We showed off Tiamat today and it’s a five color legendary Dragon with a Dragon tribal component. : )

Firebreathing Evolution

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 57 Comments

Mark, I was wondering why Wizards moved away from classic Firebreathing being something baked into a creature. Now I see creatures that have a cost of 1R for +2/+0 or something like that, but the old R for +1/+0 seems to have fallen by the wayside. I know Shivan Dragon gets put into Welcome Decks, but that seems like an exception more than anything else.

The 1R: +2/+0 is a stronger version that allows two-color decks to play with the cards.

Wizards HQ Visit

New 14 Apr 2019 Asked by fredfrisbee 43 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm an aspiring writer/game designer and I'm in seatle tomorrow looking at colleges... should I bother stopping by WoTC? Or is it not super tourist/visitor friendly?

There aren’t any tours per de. Sometimes the front desk will let you see the Shivan Dragon statue in the old lobby.

Nightmare Card Decision

New 22 Jun 2018 Asked by aferalrose-blog 39 Comments

With M19 already fully spoiled, I have to ask... No Nightmare? Between this set being a core set and having a horse sub-theme I was /really/ expecting to see her around again. Instead it seems she is getting replaced by the new black bird, Gravewaker on the upcoming Welcome Decks 2019. Meanwhile, red still gets to keep Shivan Dragon for at least another rotation?

We tried Nightmare at uncommon, but it ended up being a trap in limited, so we took it out.

Shivan Dragon Rarity Concern

Is Shivan Dragon too strong at uncommon?

It would be problematic in limited.

Why is the Shivan Dragon statue named Mitzi?

I have no idea. My guess is someone just called her that as a joke and it stuck.

Retail Store Trivia

New 01 Oct 2017 Asked by bordergeist 41 Comments

HI Maro. It's my brithday, and I've turned 42. Do you have any trivia about the no longer existent Wizards of the Coast retail stores?

We made a whole bunch of statues for the stores, mostly Magic and Star Wars stuff. When we shut them down, most of the statues moved to Wizards. That’s where Mitzi, the Shivan Dragon that hangs in the lobby came from. Happy Birthday!

Mono-Red Dragons Query

New 18 Aug 2017 Asked by zillasmasher 53 Comments

Mr Rosewater, as a huge fan of anything and everything Mono-Red Dragons I have to ask, will we be getting at least one Mono-Red Dragon in Dominaria? Maybe a reference to Shivan Dragon or something similar, like a modernized/upgraded version of the original dragon?

It is red’s iconic creature…

Early Magic Memories

I was out today,so I missed storytime. Here's mine. I started in 94 with a Revised starter deck. It had a few hurloons and a serra angel in it, so I played R/W... for 4 years. I traded 3 duallands and a Nightmare for my 1st Shivan Dragon. oh well : )

Wizards HQ Visit

New 25 Apr 2015 Asked by bfbonatto 29 Comments

I will in the near future go to Seattle and would really like to visit or just go in the lobby of Wizards, is there any way I can drop by? Do you guys have tours or a gift shop or something?

There is no gift shop and no tour. You can come to the fourth floor lobby to see Mitzi (the Shivan Dragon) but that’s about it.

Alpha Iconics Identified

New 06 Jan 2015 Asked by luckylooter 42 Comments

I would consider Sengir Vampire, Serra Angel, and Shivan Dragon the Iconic Iconics. Do you agree? What would the other two be, for Green and Blue?

Those are the Alpha iconics. The others are probably Vesuvan Doppelgänger and Force of Nature.

Shivan Dragon Trivia

New 31 Dec 2014 Asked by buggyracer 36 Comments

So it's my (40th) birthday- yes, I've been playing this game for 19 years! Any trivia on the first rare I ever pulled, Shivan Dragon? Thanks for all you've done for this game!

The dragon was named originally after Shiva, the Indian god. It was then retroactively changed to reference the city of Shiv on Domnaria. Happy Birthday!

Red Flyers Rule

New 11 Dec 2014 Asked by lazcarno 22 Comments

You said that red isn't supposed to have non-dragon flyers. Discounting the "bad" red flyers at common which I know are supposed to be a thing (Impetuous Sunchaser, Goblin Balloon Brigade, etc), does that mean you don't approve of Geyser Glider from Zendikar? It may not be Shivan Dragon, but it seems far from a "bad card."

Red gets dragons and phoenix as well as the occasional bad smaller flier.
