Set Boosters

Transition to Value Boosters

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by marlarkey01 12 Comments

Hey Mark, why was it decided to remove the draft and set the booster because of confusion amongst them, but putting value booster is better, is supposed to be a support for pauper/pauper commander?

You’re conflating two things that have nothing to do with one another. Draft boosters went away because the majority of the audience preferred set boosters. Play boosters were a way to keep the essence of set boosters while still providing limited play. All of that is mostly centered in local game stores. Value boosters are addressing a need of certain mass market stores to have Magic boosters at a lower price point. They are not a product the vast majority of enfranchised players will ever interact with, and their existence has nothing to do with organized play.

Reprints of Secret Lair Exclusives

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by izzet-always-r-versus-u 4 Comments

Any news on reprints of secret lair exclusives? After the initial few SLX runs, exclusives without non-lair reprints have started to pile up again (Honor Among Thieves, Doctor Who, Lara Croft, Arden Angel). Did the switch from Set Boosters to Play Boosters affect getting these out in the wild at all, and if so, is there a new solution in place yet?

Play boosters have added some new challenges to work through.

Token Slot Complexity

New 06 May 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 15 Comments

About the suggestion of a second token slot being surprisingly complicated. There was a time when there was no token/ad/minigame slot in packs. How complicated was it when the pro tour player profile cards were added then turned into the ad/token slot?

Making a draft booster is a different animal than making a set booster. The play boosters are far closer to a set booster than a draft booster, so comparing it to old draft booster executions is comparing apples and oranges.

Drafts & Play Boosters

New 06 May 2024 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 24 Comments

Maybe I am in the minority, but I previously only bought set boosters and never really cared for draft as I was primarily a constructed player. With Play Booster, I actually started to play in drafts and prereleases. So it's actually a win for me and my play group who would never play any form of limited.

I haven’t seen the data on this yet, but I believe you’re part of a larger group than you think.

Booster Pricing Explanation

New 06 May 2024 Asked by luna--flare 36 Comments

"You are getting something for that price increase, more rares/mythic rares per dollar spent."This is an appeal primarily to the audience who were previously buying Set Boosters. Limited players are more interested in a good limited experience, and the OTJ format is showing this can be actively detrimental. I understand compromises had to be made to save limited, but I wish it wouldn't be spun like an active positive for draft players.

I’m not trying to spin it like a positive. I’m trying to explain how it’s not a case of us being greedy or trying to sell you less for more.

Play Booster Pricing

New 06 May 2024 Asked by theothin 25 Comments

For someone buying Play Boosters as a replacement for Set Boosters, the price of a booster has not changed. For someone buying Play Boosters as a replacement for Draft Boosters, the price of a booster has increased.

You are getting something for that price increase, more rares/mythic rares per dollar spent.

Booster Price Clarification

New 05 May 2024 Asked by mrmoustachemm 28 Comments

"I will note that the price of boosters didn’t go up." - Maybe what you mean by this is that the wholesale price didn't go up, but (at least in my country) the price of Play Boosters is more than the price Set Boosters were. Maybe this is a distributor issue, but the fact is I've had to pay more since the change.

Wizards is charging the same price for a play booster that we charged for a set booster. The price of a booster box went up because set booster boxes were 30 booster packs and play booster boxes have 36 booster packs.

Booster Cost Concerns

New 05 May 2024 Asked by anyguy 10 Comments

More a note and I don't even know if there is a solution to my problem: I am a 100% limited player with a tight budget. With play boosters being more expensive then draft booster, due to budget, this just leads to me playing less. Also inflation is additional stress on my budget. I feel, that I'm getting less and less enfranchised and engaged because now I do less drafts. I fear loosing MTG as a hobby. I mostly play in my LGS and don't have a private playgroup, where we could play cheaper options like cube. I know WotC is a company and has to show growing revenue but it just sucks, that I may loose this great hobby and game because of monetary aspects.

I hear your frustration. The popularity of set boosters meant when we consolidated draft boosters and set boosters, they were crafted more to match set boosters. We essentially made set boosters draftable. I will note that the price of boosters didn’t go up. Play boosters cost the same as set boosters, and, like set boosters, you do get a higher amount of rares/mythic rares, on average, to match the higher price point. But yes, if all you do is draft, the individual drafts got more expensive. None of this change was done to somehow squeeze extra money out of people. We just took the most popular booster product and sold it at the same price, but with added value (more cards per booster and made it draftable).

Play Boosters Purpose

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by randomfusilier 16 Comments

what was the rationale behind play boosters? as s fan of set boosters, I was disappointed by the contents of the several packs of play boosters (mkm) I got. only a few hits on art series, and one of my cards was actually those very flimsy token cards.

To save limited play.

Reprint Timing Adaptation

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by j-waffles 32 Comments

In 2021, WotC released an article saying that mechanically unique universes beyond secret lair cards would get universes within reprints approximately 6 months later. The exact wording of this was “The [universes within] versions will be available in The List, findable in Set Boosters…” Set boosters no longer exist, but The List still does. With the advent of play boosters, is the rule of “approximately 6 months later” still the case? Or is that promise now void because there are no Set Boosters anymore?

As the game evolves, we have to adapt. We still plan to make sure unique mechanical Secret Lair cards, in some form, find a home in randomized booster product.

Praise for Play Boosters

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by unknownwarrior33 17 Comments

I just wanted to say, I love Play Boosters. They're part of the reason I played in the prerelease this time; in the past I've had to choose between the prerelease and getting set boosters, so this was awesome.

Happy to hear that.

Set Booster Changes

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by bethlehemslouch-blog 23 Comments

Mark! Just realized something looking through MKC spoilers - Does the consolidation of set boosters into play boosters mean no more booster-exclusive cards from the commander set? Like, all the commander cards will be in the commander decks again, for good?? I really hope so.

They won’t be in play boosters if I understand what you’re asking.

UB Cards in Boosters

New 24 Dec 2023 Asked by thunderweb 41 Comments

Set boosters of some premier sets have Universes Beyond cards inserted. (BRO had Transformers, and LCI had Jurassic World.)Will Play boosters have UB cards as well? If they do, will those cards be used in Limited?

No current sets in design have Universe Beyond cards inserted a la Transformers and Jurassic World.

Boosters for Drafting

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by slapcastermage 34 Comments

The limited sets in the past 4 years have been unbelievable! I have been having an absolute blast, I have drafted them all! I was crushed to hear that draft boosters were going away. Why were draft boosters added, taken away, and replaced with play boosters? With the additional rare slot and less commons to fuse with the now obsolete set boosters, it feels like the push to make everything more profitable is creeping into limited play. Some things I like about limited 1) Each set is usually not impacted by must-have or oppressive commander or modern cards. 2) I like is that it's common centric. 3) I like that there is a lower frequency of rares. 4) low cost of entry, 15 bucks at my local lgs, 10 on Arena. In general, I am not happy about the limited booster changes but I will wait to try them.I am concerned that one day limited will be deemed "not profitable" and this golden age will end.

Play boosters are us ensuring that draft continues on. Draft boosters were selling so poorly, they were eventually going to be eliminated. We took steps to make sure you can keep drafting.

Dr Who Secret Lair

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by jambrose 35 Comments

Oh Hi Mark, with the dr who secret lair with mechanically unique cards being revealed and the timeline putting it after set boosters have gone away. Are the universe within versions going to be in play booster and therefore in draft or is there going to be another venue for getting these?

I believe that is still being figured out. Or if they have figured it out, no one’s told me yet.

UB Distribution Feedback

New 23 Nov 2023 Asked by jimmycomments 95 Comments

Hi Mark - I just wanted to offer my opinion on the UB distribution methods. When the Transformers cards came out, I thought that them being in set boosters was fine. It turns out that's just because I'm not that into Transformers. Now the Jurassic Park/World stuff is around, I really dislike this method. I like those films, and I have friends and loved ones I could get to play if I had more of the cards, but they're hard to obtain. LotR, Street Fighter, and Dr Who were better for this.

Commander Cards Availability

New 27 Oct 2023 Asked by mjawadb 23 Comments

My favorite part of the previous (new) sets were the commander cards seeded in set boosters, like the Myr commander and the Food Golems commander, with them gone, are there plans to find a way to bring them back somehow? or are they gone for good

There gone from premier play boosters, but we make a lot of products, so we can find other homes from those type of designs.

Commander Precon Exclusivity

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by abxxxy 27 Comments

Sorry to repeat this question but I just want some clarification. Cards that are unique designs for a commander precon that releases alongside a premiere set (ex. Murders at Karlov Commander) will not appear in any boosters. This means that unique precon designs will only be accessible in their precon.

I believe that was always true. There were a handful of Commander-focused designs that appeared in set boosters, but not draft boosters. That’s what’s going away.

Set Boosters Analysis

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by qanadhar 28 Comments

Hi Mark. Zendikar Rising came out in September 2020, in the heart of the pandemic when in person limited play was effectively non-existent and would be for nearly 2 more years. Did the analysts take that massive warping factor into consideration as to why Set Boosters outsold Draft Boosters?Seems like a pretty significant external factor to me.That said, I stopped buying draft boosters to crack and only play in-store, so have no need to acquire boxes for at home draft, so this change is no impact personally, but I think the pandemic may have skewed the data too much to support such a significant change.

The downward trend of draft boosters have gotten worse over time, not better. The data fights against this being a pandemic effect.

Excitement for Play Boosters

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by pascal314 26 Comments

Hi Mark. I'm actually really looking forward to play boosters. I like to play drafts occasionally, but the people I play with aren't the biggest fans, and I don't tend to go to draft events. So usually I get set boosters normally, and get a few draft boosters that sit around waiting to be drafted. But play boosters unifying the two packs means I don't have to decide what packs to get, I can choose how to use packs after getting them. This versatility means that, for me at least, play boosters aren't a substandard replacement for set or draft boosters, but are instead better than either of them on their own. So I'm very excited for this new product.

Happy you’re excited.
