Seething Song

Hybrid Mana Generation

Can a U/R hybrid card get a "Seething Song" that generates colorless mana?

Maybe if the mana could only be used to cast or activate artifacts.

Mana Symbol Guidelines

New 12 Oct 2019 Asked by m00nsidian 32 Comments

What's the threshold beyond which you write "Add number [one mana symbol]" instead of "Add [certain number of symbols]" ? e.g. would a theoretical reprint of Seething Song say "add five R"? A theoretical reprint of Pyretic Ritual, "add three R"? Culling the Weak, "add four B"? Would that be decided at time of printing?

I think we use the number for four or more of the same mana symbol (in rules text).

Red Rituals Naming

New 26 Dec 2016 Asked by shadesofpink 40 Comments

What's the flavour justification for Red's "rituals" being called rituals? It makes sense for the Black ones to be called rituals (you know, because Occult practices and demonic worship). But why would the colour of emotion do a ritual for mana? Tbh, Seething Song is exactly the kind of naming for the red mana instants/sorceries.

The word “ritual” is more of a carry over due to slang. I agree that there are better words which are more Red for the ability.

Red Mana Flavor

New 11 Dec 2016 Asked by chandiggity-blog 63 Comments

What's the flavor justification for having red generate red mana? I.e. Chandra ToD, seething song, and the like.

Red is all about the here and now, using up whatever resources it has to get things in the present.

Seething Song Ban

New 06 Mar 2014 Asked by moak0-blog-blog-blog 37 Comments

Some players are still upset about Seething Song. Modern Storm was an easy deck to beat, so it just seemed malicious. Even though it's still a good deck, I don't spend any money on Modern, because I got the hint: my type of Magic isn't wanted.

Bannings are never done maliciously. We are trying the best we can to make a fun metagame for the largest possible amount of players.

Storm Mechanic Evaluation

New 31 Jan 2014 Asked by auhosj877 55 Comments

I don't really understand why storm is a 10 on the storm scale. Storm really isn't a broken mechanic if there are no cheap rituals in the format. Its pretty simple really. Last time it was in standard with seething song, rite of flame and lotus bloom so it was really good. Its like saying hyopnotic specter is overpowered because you can play it turn 1 off of a dark ritual.

Don’t let Storm sweet talk you. It’s not as harmless as it says it is.

Banning Combo Decks

New 22 Apr 2013 Asked by thejuggernautbitch-deactivated2 40 Comments

So you just keep banning and banning every combo deck that's even remotely good. My store just lost all it's modern players with Seething Song and Second Sunrise bannings. Why do you guys hate combo players so much?

We don’t hate combo. We dislike non-interaction. Magic is more fun if two people get to actually play one another.

WOTC Ban Philosophy

New 20 Mar 2013 Asked by nickdangel-blog 4 Comments

i like to play engine combo decks. in modern, i spent my money building storm, then, wizards ban seething song, i said: "well... okay... i can play eggs at least" and reccently seems that a lot of people wants the only real engine combo deck that stands without banning gone. What is the position of WOTC about this?

We try to ban as little as possible while still keeping formats healthy.

Modern Bannings

New 31 Jan 2013 Asked by dimirheadmaster-blog 13 Comments

Why cant people be accepting of R&Ds decisions for modern bannings? No one likes when a deck makes up the majority Meta. So many people are mad about bloodbraid and seething song..

Players are always angry when we ban anything and rightfully so. It sucks to have cards banned. That’s why we try so hard not to ban things. That said, having an unfun environment sucks even more so we ban to make things better.

Storm Deck Frustrations

New 28 Jan 2013 Asked by machuchang 10 Comments

Hey Maro. I've been really interested in Modern for a while, and had slowly been piecing together the cards needed for a Storm deck to make my big debut into the format. But the banning of Seething Song has rendered my efforts worthless. I can understand WOTC's problems with the Storm mechanic, but it really sucks when a deck you've made and gotten excited about turns to dust before you can even try it out. I know it's not really your field, but I just wanted to talk to someone. Any advice?

EDIT: Tumblr’s acting up again. The question was about Rabid Hybridization. I personally do not like it costing one mana. I personally do not like it being an instant. I’m leaning toward these effects exiling or being put on the bottom of the library. What I am saying is that it doesn’t violate the color pie which is not the same thing as saying it’s perfect as is.

Storm Bans Critique

New 28 Jan 2013 Asked by acclimation6 12 Comments

Bad R&D! BAD! Hit them all with newspapers for me for banning Seething Song. Killing Storm in that format is a good way to alienate a good chunk of your player base. Super unhappy with this banning.

If you read what Erik Lauer wrote the issue isn’t killing storm but trying to restrict wins that happen in the first three turns. Storm has proven it’s pretty versatile. I wouldn’t count it out just yet.
