Unfun Card Design

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 38 Comments

Have you ever designed a card you didn’t think was fun? Not vanilla or smth, but like actively not fun. Also! Which card that you personally designed do you like playing against the least?

I have made cards that ended up being quite unfun, not on purpose, but mistakes have been made. Rishadan Port comes to mind.

Unexpected Hits

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by throwaway1743 50 Comments

“I’ve had designs that I thought people would adore which they didn’t, and cards that I thought nothing of that became huge hits.” What are some examples of cards that became huge hits that you thought nothing of at the time? What were your takeaways?

I thought Rishadan Port was nothing special. Takeaway lesson: Card power has a huge impact on whether people like a card. : )

White's Land Disruption

New 27 Jan 2020 Asked by shinygreninja 29 Comments

Assuming it doesn't already, can white ever have access to Rishadan Port effects (manually tapping people's lands)? Would a port that's activated with WW be unprintable?

It’s not an effect we want to do very often.

Design Regret

What card do you most regret designing?

Rishadan Port sucked a lot of fun out of the game.

Rishadan Port Insight

New 05 May 2018 Asked by ironchefravnica 42 Comments

I'm surprised by your take on Rishadan Port. I thought it was a relatively reasonable answer to some very unreasonable lands. Gaea's Cradle and Tolarian Academy come to mind immediately.

That just makes Gaea’s Cradle and Tolarian Academy also mistakes.

I regret making Rishadan Port. *That* was an unfun card.

Today we’ll say Rishadan Port.

Rishadan Port Standard

New 03 Feb 2017 Asked by kmalsom 18 Comments

Would Rishadan Port be too good for standard? I want to play D&T in standard.

While I do think it’s too powerful, it’s lack of fun is the bigger obstacle preventing a reprint.

Creature vs Land

New 13 Aug 2016 Asked by rowanalpha 27 Comments

"Look up the card Rishadan Port in Gatherer. It was the most broken card in its block. " If repeatable tap ability was on a creature instead of a land like Port, would that make it easier to balance? Lands were not simple to deal with back then, and land destruction has only gotten weaker since.

Would a creature with the ability be weaker than a land? Sure. Is it still too much? Absolutely.

Land Tapping Power

New 13 Aug 2016 Asked by theorderofdagon-blog 53 Comments

Would a permanent be too powerful if it had a once per turn, repeatable land tapping ability? Since you mentioned that the team was trying out the ability in red, I was thinking that locking an opponent out of a color temporarily via land tapping seemed like a pretty red thing to do, but I wasn't sure if that was considered unfun under the current design philosophy.

Look up the card Rishadan Port in Gatherer. It was the most broken card in its block.

Mercadia Return

New 30 Mar 2016 Asked by nivmizzetthefiremind 13 Comments

If we were to return to Mercadia, could we potentially see a reprint of Rishadan Port?

In Standard? Unlikely. Not a developer, yada, yada.

Unfun Cards Demand

New 04 Jan 2015 Asked by homerlaw 53 Comments

Mr. Rosewater, I really like unfun grindy cards (Rishadan Port, Smoke Stack, The Abyss, etc.) and while I get my kicks in legacy can I expect to see more "unfun" cards in standard?

Of the kind you listed? Not on purpose.

Rishadan Port in Standard?

New 04 Jan 2015 Asked by aazadan 15 Comments

Would a Rishadan Port for only non basics be something you would be willing to put into Standard and Modern?

Not a developer, but Rishadan Port was one of the most unfun cards of all time. Not being able to ever cast your spells is not fun Magic. So, no.

Reprint Policy Reasoning

New 13 Oct 2013 Asked by piaco 16 Comments

What are the reasons for not reprinting high-demand cards like Force of Will, Wasteland or Rishadan Port in supplemental, non-Standard products, the same way you did with Sol Ring in Commander?

There is a tightrope we walk between getting cards into the hands of players that don’t have them and not undermining the value for the players that already do have them.

Creating Powerful Cards

New 23 Sep 2013 Asked by agahin 13 Comments

really liked your podcast on lands, it was great. I find it funny that it was you the creator of Rishadan Port, have you made any other really broken cards?

During Mirrodin block, I passed Richard Garfield as the person to have designed the most banned cards, so yes, I’ve made a few broken cards. Probably my most broken is Tinker followed by Yagwmoth’s Will.

Rishadan Port Reprint

New 08 Sep 2013 Asked by agahin 29 Comments

is Rishadan Port too strong to be reprinted?

Let me start by reminding you that I am not a developer and thus power level is not my area of expertise. That said, yes.
