Power Creep

Green Power Creep Issue

New 21 Dec 2019 Asked by evscfa1 45 Comments

Why does it seem like green has become extremely power crept in the last few years and can do almost anything except "destroy target creature" (and that is debatable with stuff like the etb fighting hydra recently printed), but white and red are vehemently not allowed to come close to the sheer magnitude of things green can do? For example, green gets rewarded for doing green things, but white can't be rewarded nearly as much for doing what white likes to do?

White can be rewarded for doing white things. The reward though have to be white rewards.

Creature Power Creep

New 02 Dec 2019 Asked by hyrosen-blog 52 Comments

Doesn't the power increase of creatures over the years minimize green's weakness?

Green was very weak in early Magic. You know all the mail I get about white. It used to be about green.

Curbing Power Creep

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by yourstarshipisgay-deactivated20 71 Comments

What strategies, if any, does Wizards take to avoid power creep? Or at least, make an attempt to curb it?

I did a whole podcast on it. We call it the Escher Stairwell where we lower one aspect while raising others, so it appears like it keeps going up while actually staying steady.

Magic's Biggest Threats

New 15 Sep 2019 Asked by shinygreninja 93 Comments

What it would take to kill Magic is a common joke around these parts, but serious question: what do you think is the *smallest*, most seemingly-inconsequential thing the creators of Magic at large could do to kill Magic?

The biggest realistic threat is complexity creep. Power creep is probably the second biggest risk if left unchecked.

Can Power Creep Reverse?

Is power creep reversible?

Only in formats where things rotate out.

Design Pendulum Monitoring

New 30 Jan 2019 Asked by paxaqua 37 Comments

You’ve said before that Magic design is a pendulum in order to avoid power creep. Are the measures on that pendulum actively monitored? For example, do you actively pull back on, say, burn spells, with the plan to push them again in 2-3 years?

That’s a Play Design question. I think they’re aware of general areas they’re pushing and pulling back on, but I’m not sure whether it’s all mapped out. I assume some of it is matching what sets are focusing on.

Standard Set Power-Level

New 19 Nov 2018 Asked by voxx-skies-blog-blog 27 Comments

Is there a static target power-level for standard sets? If so why have one power-level as opposed to having it vary, since anything undesireable will cycle out later?

We keep the overall power level of Standard somewhat consistent to avoid power creep issues, but we do ebb and flow the power level of different effects.
In Standard A, for instance, direct damage might be at the top of what’s allowed while land fetching might be weak while in Standard B, direct damage could be middle of the road while land fetching excels.

Power Level Decisions

New 11 Oct 2018 Asked by mgmegadog 35 Comments

In addition to your point about power creep, while not reprints, cards like Fatal Push and Assassin's Trophy have passed through standard just fine, so it's a not a case of standard not being able to handle that power, but about the individual cards and their effects on the meta.

We only get so many slots for that higher power level and we tend to want to reserve them most of the time for new cards.

Power Level Concerns

New 11 Oct 2018 Asked by tomorsomthing 58 Comments

Why not just make standard stronger so we can actually get impactful reprints of modern cards? You say "the power level of standard is supposed to fluctuate, with some sets being stronger than others", but the fact that standard hasnt been strong enough to support modern reprints since somewhere around m11 or m12, that doesn't seem to be the case. If anything were further away from a lightning bolts and Giants standard than ever, and that's a real waste.

In order to make a format with two years of cards powerful enough that it can easily include numerous cards that stand out in a format with fifteen years of cards, you’d have to make it insanely powerful and cause major power creep, neither of which would be good for the long term health of the game.

Standard Set Power Levels

New 01 Jul 2018 Asked by rekian 51 Comments

Hey Mark! I believe you act very carefully when releasing a Standard-legal set in order not to have a substantial power creep (i.e. cards like Arena Rector in Battlebond) but after all it’s a format that rotates every two years so can’t you be less strict from time to time? Or a little bit more often than you usually do (i.e. Snapcaster Mage 7 years ago)?

If we’ve made any mistakes in the last few years, I don’t think it’s an unwillingness to put strong cards in Standard. : )

Power Creep Explained

Can you explain power creep?

It’s constantly increasing the power level of a game to make the new things more exciting.

Return to Homelands

New 20 Mar 2017 Asked by phyrexian-without-a-cause 29 Comments

Would a Return to Homelands in some form or another (an actual set, references in another set, etc) ever be conceivable? Having forced a draft with it, I realize that the set design and power creep were weak, to say the least, but I feel like it could redeem itself, given the strong plot, settings, characters, and lore of Ulgrotha itself.

It’s a hard sell when we have another Gothic horror setting that’s much more popular.

Power Creep Discussion

New 17 Mar 2017 Asked by birdofablackfeather 23 Comments

" Are you taking suggestions for future point/counterpoint articles? If so, may I recommend power creep? That requires someone advocating power creep which neither Sam nor I want to do." How about making beneficial abilities 'may' abilities or not?

That one has potential. I think Sam and I might actually be on opposite sides.

Creature Power Creep

New 10 Feb 2017 Asked by jalnuel-blog 38 Comments

Hey Mark, over the last 5-8 years we've seen a serious power creep in relation to creatures, is there any plan to reel that back a bit for those of us who love to cast everything else?

Go back and look at the best creatures 5-8 years ago. If you compare them to the best creatures now, they aren’t more powerful. I would argue they’re a little weaker.

Avoiding Power Creep

New 11 Jan 2017 Asked by mcsleuthburger 41 Comments

Talking about R&D pushing cards in a set. What would be the concerns with pushing no cards in order to reduce power creep?

A big driver of sales is players excited by new powerful cards they can put in their decks.

Pushed Cards Philosophy

New 11 Jan 2017 Asked by enfranchised-player-blog 52 Comments

As an avid listener to your podcast and a long time magic player, I love the credo "restriction breeds creativity", as well as much of your design philosophy. If restrictions lead to creativity, why does R&D always create "pushed" cards in each set? They seem to be saying; "Hey, do what you want, be creative, but also you must play with these 8-16 cards of you will just lose."

We want each set to be relevant to Standard, but if every card was potentially tournament viable, we’d create massive power creep. So, we choose a group of cards (far more than 16) that have potential for tournament play and let the players steer the meta game.

Addressing Power Creep

New 28 Aug 2016 Asked by gaygatsbyy 29 Comments

"Awesome things await you. : )" will all these awesome sets, are you/Wotc worried about power creep like what happened other trading card games?

Erik Lauer is doing an amazing job (along with the whole development team) of keeping power level in check and making sure there’s no power creep.

Apparently.

Powerful Standard Considerations

New 22 May 2016 Asked by pimpedupmonk-blog 44 Comments

Have you ever considered getting around the modern reprints by having a single super powerful standard, with cards such as counterspell, bolt, path, dark confidant all in the same format but with terrible mana fixing?

Introducing power creep and unstabilizing years of development work for the possible potential to reprint old cards seems a dubious strategy.
