Concerns about Type-line Crowding

New 19 Mar 2022 Asked by j-waffles 56 Comments

I’m really disappointed nameless race isn’t the only creature without a creature type anymore. With the advent of “phyrexian” as a creature type, and with cards like the reality chip or the new shrines being so cramped, I hope a new look is being taken to the type-line on ways to make more room for more wordy type-lines, allowing for fewer cards to invade my special space

With 20,000+ cards, exclusivity of effect/quality really isn’t a luxury we have. I remember when we made Changeling, I got a bunch of messages from players about how we were making Mistform Ultimus less special. Your particular case is an odder case, as we did it out of necessity. We are looking into the issue of crowded creature type lines.

About Go-Shintai Shrine Creatures

New 21 Feb 2022 Asked by you140 33 Comments

Are the Go-Shintai Shrine creatures nothing for their creature type like Nameless Race or [Undefined] as they weren't given a creature sub-type?

They have no creature type like Nameless Race.

Do all creatures now have at least a creature type, enchantment type or artifact type? With the special exception of Nameless Race.

I believe so.

Subtype of New Shrines

So about the whole shrine "enchantment vs creature subtype" thing... does this mean the new shrines are creatures without any creature type, like Nameless Race?

Yes.

So Go-Shintai of Shared Purpose has no creature type, for cards that care about that?

Correct, much like Nameless Race.

Point of information: nameless race has no creature type

That’s done as a special one-of joke and is not meant as a precedent.

Creature Without Subtype

New 09 Oct 2017 Asked by macgyvercas-deactivated20171221 38 Comments

Would you ever make a creature without a subtype again, a la Nameless Race?

It’s not the kind of joke that gets funnier in volume.

Creature Type Specificity

New 15 Apr 2017 Asked by bloodstonegoth 31 Comments

When you'll get too specific with creature types, you might as well go back to the "Nameless Race" days. If there's a serious split between people wanting Naga or Snakes, good gameplay should decide - and less types overwhelmingly lead to better gameplay.

This is a classic example of a Vorthos/Mel split. For Vorthos, the creature types are about flavor. They love seeing variety because it’s a place to sneak more flavor into the game. For Mel, the creature types are about mechanics. The more concentrated they are, the easier it is to enable tribal decks. No one is correct here. It’s just different players prioritizing what matters to them in the game. That means we have to balance between these two desires and strike a balance between flavorful variety and mechanical concentration. The Naga/Snake fight is right on the line and why it’s so contentious. Each side feels they’re on the right side of the line.

Token Type Consistency

New 13 Apr 2017 Asked by siamkor 29 Comments

Why don't Soldier / Warrior / Cleric tokens have the Human type except in Innistrad? I know that in Innistrad Human mechanically matters, but it seems so weird that everywhere else Class tokens are of the Nameless Race - particularly when most of the times the token art clearly depicts them as human.

The default is tokens have just one creature type for simplicity. We break that rule usually when it mechanically matters as it did in Innistrad.

Creature Type Rule

New 12 Oct 2016 Asked by fenfensden 44 Comments

The Exception to the "every creature must have a creature type" rule was Arcanis, the Omnipotent, was it not? Who after the rule was implemented retained only the type "Wizard" and no indication of his race.

Wizard is a creature type.Nameless Race is the card without a creature type.

Creature Type Rule Exception

New 11 Oct 2016 Asked by doubleatam 26 Comments

"We have a rule that every creature (yes, there's one exception) must have a creature type." Did you mean the exception was Nameless Race, or all Vehicles? I understand that was a throwaway remark, but I think addressing Vehicles would've been relevant, since it's counterintuitive to me.

Vehicles aren’t creatures in a flavor sense. It a mechanical execution to replicate them moving and doing damage.

Quirky Creatures in Standard

New 07 Oct 2016 Asked by tommo999 50 Comments

i have been playing magic for years, i have seen alot of cool ideas go and pass. but may i ask, will we ever see cards like the following: Force of Savagery (aka a creature with 0 toughness but no way to pump itself or clone a creature), Nameless Race (aka a creature with no creature types) or Spinal Parasite (aka a creature minus power and/or toughness) in standard?

We continue to do quirky creatures from time to time.

Creature Type Necessity

New 18 Jun 2016 Asked by mraptronym 28 Comments

In your podcast on subtypes you mention that creatures need subtypes. To be pedantic, they don't really need them, and you made Nameless Race very sad. They get along just fine!

I said “need” because it’s a requirement. All creatures have to be given a creature type. Nameless Race is the one exception to the rule.

The current policy is  that all creatures, without a very strong reason, must have a creature type.
