Mistakes Were Made

Dovin Baan Trivia

New 12 Oct 2016 Asked by slimegirl-pseudopod 22 Comments

MARO! HI! My birthday was several days ago, and my trivia was eaten. But that's okay, I asked for the wrong character. Mistakes were made, but I intend to fix them. So this time I'll ask for the right card. Can I get some trivia on Dovin Baan? Preferably the card.

Dovin Baan, like all Vedalken, has six fingers on each hand.Happy Birthday!

Volcanic Island Release

Do you know the reason volcanic island wasn't printed until beta? If so, can you tell us? : )

The real reason is Wizards was new to making press sheets and a lot of mistakes were made. A lot!

BFZ Enjoyment Validated

New 10 May 2016 Asked by corvus-abyssus 25 Comments

Regarding BFZ as a mistake: I started playing lightly during Theros, but didn't own cards until BFZ. As a new player, everything in BFZ made sense and felt like it was done right. I dove hard into the story, went to the OGW prerelease, and never looked back.

Just because mistakes were made doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot for players to enjoy.

Time Spiral Reflections

New 03 Jan 2016 Asked by mana-ramp-matoran-deactivated20 64 Comments

What were the mistakes Time Spiral made? Wasn't the point of it to break out of the color pie restrictions and do things you couldn't otherwise do or explain flavor wise? Could you extrapolate on what it's successes and failures were? Thanks Mark.

Failures:
Way, way, way too complicated. Most three set blocks had somewhere between eight and twelve mechanics. Time Spiral block had well over thirty. Constantly broke color pie. Sometimes because we did it in the past. Sometimes because it was an alternate reality. Sometimes because we were exploring potential future mechanics. It, to this day, causes confusion. Too insular. Less established players didn’t get much of what was being referenced and felt left out. Successes: The bonus sheet was a cool idea and used interestingly. The nostalgia factor was compelling and while mistakes were made, it created a strong positive emotion in many players. We managed to do some good fixes on some old mechanics. Morph was executed better. Vanishing did what most players though Fading did. We managed to rein in what Kicker meant.

Roboblogatog, what is your favorite banned card from Urza's Saga?

Mistakes were made. If I tell my favorite, mechanics will die.

Helvault Event Feedback

New 03 May 2012 Asked by steinlockchen 38 Comments

Im glad how even after the helvault fiasco no one will stop playing Magic, and that's because we love the game but you people are taking advantage of that. Dont take me wrong i like your work, but what you did it's like telling to all the players who didn't get the premium stuff you dont give a shit about them.

Let me start by saying that it is very clear that the helvault upset some people and obviously we aren’t in the business of making people unhappy, so I heartfully apologize to anyone who was made to feel bad by our actions. We are using this experience to learn and I hope future prerelease experiences will be more universally loved. (Note, by the way, that while there are those upset, there were also many players who enjoyed the helvault.) That said, I am a little offended at the number of people acting like we were somehow out to do wrong by the players. We were trying to do something you guys would love. Obviously, a giant event like this is very complex and requires all sorts of decisions that you guys never see, but please don’t ever doubt that we weren’t trying to create something memorable. Yes, mistakes were made but do you honestly feel like we don’t care about the players?  Wizards’ staff goes above and beyond to try and connect with our players and keep open a line of communication. Yes, we’re not going to do everything perfectly, but we sure as hell are trying our best.
