Token Evolution

New 08 Apr 2012 Asked by drsylvan 0 Comments

What brought about the shift from Bear tokens (Grizzly Fate, Caller of the Claw) to Wolf tokens (Master of the Wild Hunt, Wolfbriar Elemental) as the staple 2/2 green token? Avoiding overlap with Grizzly/Runeclaw Bears?

We tend to choose tokens based on the flavor at hand. We wanted to round out the werewolf tribe in Innistrad (because they were all on double-faced cards which restricted their numbers) so we made a bunch of wolves to play with them. It only make logical sense to also turn the green 2/2 token of the block into wolves. Note that this isn’t some permanent shift. Tokens like many aspects of Magic are ever evolving.
