Possibilities for Mood Swings

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 8 Comments

you mention 'mood swings' quite often, and you clearly have a lot of faith that it is a good game despite not being able to get it to production. have you considered doing a kickstarter for it? is that something that you would be allowed to do given your position at wotc? with your game design notoriety and dream-infiltrating levels of popularity it would seem like a pretty viable route to take.

I don’t think Kickstarter is currently a viable option, but I haven’t given up the fight. My plan is to get it to print someday. For those unaware, Mood Swings is my mass market TCG that I’ve been trying to get made for twenty-six years.

Transition to Value Boosters

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by marlarkey01 12 Comments

Hey Mark, why was it decided to remove the draft and set the booster because of confusion amongst them, but putting value booster is better, is supposed to be a support for pauper/pauper commander?

You’re conflating two things that have nothing to do with one another. Draft boosters went away because the majority of the audience preferred set boosters. Play boosters were a way to keep the essence of set boosters while still providing limited play. All of that is mostly centered in local game stores. Value boosters are addressing a need of certain mass market stores to have Magic boosters at a lower price point. They are not a product the vast majority of enfranchised players will ever interact with, and their existence has nothing to do with organized play.

5-Card Booster Pack

New 20 Feb 2023 Asked by gman-003 34 Comments

Today's my birthday! If you're not too busy answering questions about MOM, do you have any trivia about nonstandard pack structures, interesting uses of counters, or a time you made the rule manager's eye twitch? Thanks in advance!

Many years ago, one of the big mass market outlets was interested in a 5-card booster pack, so we worked with them to make one. Happy Birthday!

Prerelease Timing Explained

New 21 Dec 2022 Asked by filobel 48 Comments

With the announcement that cards of a new set are now legal in constructed formats on the same day as the set's prerelease, what about the prerelease is "pre"? Are there plans to change the name of the prerelease event now that it's not "pre" anything?

Only stores that can run prereleases can sell product on that day. All other stores, including mass market stores, can’t sell it until the release date. So, it’s still pre.

Designing Games for Children

New 10 Jul 2022 Asked by strangecards 43 Comments

Hello Mark, I used to work at an after school center where some of the older kids played MTG, the younger kids tried but it was clearly over their head. Seeing this made me think if I could design a simpler TCG for them. Do you have experience in designing a game meant for younger minds?

I designed a whole mass market TCG, called Mood Swings, whose major purpose was to introduce many of the cool aspects of TCG’s with way less complexity (and a shorter play time).

Rosewater's Side Project Trivia

Hello, Mark! It is my birthday. Can I get some trivia about a side project you worked on? Thanks!

Over twenty years ago, I made a mass market trading card game called Mood Swings. I’ve been trying to get it published ever since. I keep returning it and trying new avenues to get it made. One day…Happy Birthday!

Query on Mood Swings

I tried searching for Mood Swings and could not find it on your blog. What is it exactly?

It’s a mass market trading card game I’ve been trying to get made for twenty plus years.

Sales at Game Stores vs Mass Market

New 27 May 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 51 Comments

"Local Game Stores (LGS) and Mass Market Stores are very different things. None of your examples are an LGS, they’re all Mass Market. I don’t have percentages, but I do know a decent chunk of players don’t live within a few hours of an LGS." I'm aware that LGS's and MMS's are not the same. Let me rephrase. Do you think more Magic cards are sold at LGS's or at MMS's?

MMSs (in America, at least), but that’s just because a larger group of players live closer (let’s say within an hour drive) of an MMS than a LGS. Local game stores are a super important part of Magic’s ecosystem, but a lot of players don’t live near one.

Sales distribution of Magic cards

New 27 May 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 35 Comments

In the United States of America, what percentage of Magic cards sold do you think are NOT sold in LGS's (i.e. Wal Mart, Target, Amazon, Barnes and Noble)?

Local Game Stores (LGS) and Mass Market Stores are very different things. None of your examples are an LGS, they’re all Mass Market. I don’t have percentages, but I do know a decent chunk of players don’t live within a few hours of an LGS.

Core Set Year Labeling

New 13 Dec 2019 Asked by legitimatesnappingturtle 69 Comments

Hi, I’m relatively new to magic and I was wondering why the core sets are released a year early? It seems odd to me that we have a 2020 set released in 2019.

The Core Set is sold for a whole year, as it’s an introductory set, and mass market stores won’t carry a product with the previous year written on it.

Mystery Boosters Distribution

New 09 Nov 2019 Asked by drummerjon131 30 Comments

Are Mystery Boosters coming to the mass market/ lgs? Or are they just a convention thing? because they look super neat, even if they dont have the super cool play-test cards.

They are coming to local gaming stores. There will be an article on Monday giving all the details about it.

Explaining Mood Swings

New 29 Oct 2019 Asked by karakur1-blog 47 Comments

Mood Swings? I'm afraid I don't get the reference.

I designed a mass market trading card game over twenty years ago and gave been trying to get Wizards to make it ever since. I’m very proud of the game’s design.

Naming Convention Rationale

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by tomasaki19 48 Comments

Why are the core sets named for the year after they're released, while the commander sets are named for the current year? Obviously it's too late now to change but I'm curious.

Core sets need to be on shelves for a year and the mass market stores won’t do that on a product with an old year in its name. Commander sets are on sale for less time, so the year they are sold is what’s used.

Core Sets' Year Naming

New 23 Oct 2018 Asked by placid-platypus 48 Comments

Hi Mark, why do Core Sets come out a year early? It seems especially weird that eg Core 2019 won't even be Standard legal for all of 2019.

They’re labeled that way so mass market stores will carry them for a full year.

Core Set Discussions

New 13 May 2018 Asked by winterwarp 46 Comments

So when R&D decided to bring back core sets (which I think is a good decision), was there a discussion about doing a core set every two years like how it was up to 10th Edition? On a related note, why is it preferable to have core sets every year?

Because we need an introductory product year long and mass markets are helped by yearly refreshing.

Commander Precons Labeling

New 06 Apr 2018 Asked by venalvizier-blog 45 Comments

I get why Core sets are labelled a year ahead, to extend their shelf life... so how come the same reasoning isn't used for Commander precons?

They don’t stay in mass market stores as long.

Core Set Naming

New 17 Mar 2018 Asked by gaelan 67 Comments

Why is it M19 and not M18?

Core sets are designed to be sold for a whole year, but mass market won’t carry products with a past year in their name.

Core Set Naming

New 13 Jan 2018 Asked by pneumatichugdispenser-blog 74 Comments

Hi Mark, why is it that Core Set 2019 is being released in 2018? Why not just name it Core Set 2018? Was it a result of sets being shuffled around, or was it planned that way? Thanks.

Mass market stores won’t carry products with outdated years in the product name. We want this core set to be in mass market stores for a year, so we have to do the car thing of labeling them a year ahead.

Product Naming Logic

New 21 Sep 2017 Asked by papillon94 56 Comments

What do you mean "Stay around in mass?" I've always kinda been perplexed by that naming style of cars as well.

Mass market stores will stop selling something that has 2018 on it in 2019. By calling it Core 2019, it can sell for longer.

Mood Swings Game Details

New 30 Apr 2016 Asked by 4blackout 36 Comments

You told me to get back to you after Question Time was over, so I'm back to ask: Could you reveal all you're allowed to about Mood Swings? I'm super curious! :D

Mood Swings was a mass market trading card game I designed back in 1998. All the cards represent emotions, there’s no necessary deck building (you can just shuffle and play) and the average game is about five minutes long. It can support limited and “constructed” play. The game is well liked by many at Wizards but I’ve yet to convince anyone at Wizards to publish it.
