Odds of Old Cards

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by lordleovold 30 Comments

First time ever using my birthday question. What are the odds of getting some of the oldest cards printed on the List? For example, the winter Mishra's Factory, original art Mana Crypt, original art Force of Will and Mana Drain? Or basically any card from the first 4 expansions?

I’ll say the odds aren’t high. Happy Birthday.

Reserved List Vs. Card Value

New 09 Aug 2021 Asked by mikecarlucci 32 Comments

Hi Mark! Not sure if you can get into it but if the Reserved List promise is so important why did the list go away after Masques? Jace, Goyf, Mana Crypt, lands all still hold value.

The Reserved List covers the period of time where Magic was produced in much smaller quantities of cards. By Mercadian Masques, we were printing a much larger amount of cards per set.

Understanding Reprints

New 31 May 2020 Asked by juzamsgrin 25 Comments

What goes into the decision making when reprints are considered? Mana Crypt is one of my favorite cards, but why is it getting reprinted yet again, while a card like Grim Tutor, a much needed and desired card, still hasn't been?

While there is talk between designers on products to make sure they’re not doing the same reprint too close to one another, most decisions are based within the context of that set.

Grimlock Rarity

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by djscrub 60 Comments

I'll re-ask a tough question you missed: please explain Grimlock to me. I want to build a Commander deck with him, and have since he was previewed, but the card has been virtually unobtainable from the second it was released. The only cards available in the 8th Edition frame that command higher trade value are Gifts Given (a joke of interest only to collectors) and Mana Crypt (an Eternal powerhouse). Grimlock is a mechanically unique, fun card that is absurdly exclusive. Gold Spider-Man?

Grimlock, much like the holiday cards, is a silver-border card not playable in any of the major formats. It was printed in the thousands equal to the rate of other collectible Magic cards. It was available everyday of Hascon and could be purchased by anyone attending. It was also sold online. In contrast, there are fifty gold Spidermen Minimates in existence. I attended the event (SDCC) it was released at, but you had to win a lottery to have the right to purchase one. (Rumors also has it that over half of them were given away to specific people and not even in the auction for the public.) And it was never sold online. Since it’s release over fifteen years ago, I have seen in on eBay once. (In contrast when I just looked, there are four Grimlock cards on auction right now.) As Magic cards go, I admit Grimlock is a hard to get collectible, but it is nowhere as inaccessible as the gold Spiderman Minimates.

Baron Von Count Trigger

New 03 Jun 2018 Asked by bonfireforeighty-blog 51 Comments

BARON VON COUNT: cards like mana crypt said add 2, but now say add diamond diamond. Does count get the trigger for 2???

Only if you have a printing that has a 2 on it.

Masterpiece Series Reprint Policy

New 12 Sep 2016 Asked by swmystery27 70 Comments

I must oppose the Masterpiece Series. Whilst I think the arts are amazing, cards like Mana Crypt deserve a "proper" (i.e. large-scale) reprint, not one in such limited numbers. And a card that is printed in this way is not likely be reprinted elsewhere, so that's not going to happen now. Or am I missing something?

Cards in a Masterpiece series can be printed elsewhere just not in the same special frame and treatment.

Mana Crypt Rebate

New 27 May 2016 Asked by wohki-deactivated20190328 27 Comments

A friend of mine has one of the very old books with a mail-in rebate to get a mana crypt, if he sends that in, can he still get one?

No, they ran out long ago.

Ramp Card Perspective

New 06 Oct 2015 Asked by bokkiedoke 60 Comments

I think out of all the card "types", ramp is one of the only ones that doesn't have a so-called broken card. The strongest one I can think of is Harrow. Good job on that one R&D!

Sol Ring and Mana Crypt are both clearly ramp cards that are broken.

Book Promo Legality

New 29 Mar 2012 Asked by dukkhasatva 1 Comments

When the original book promo's like mana crypt were released, in what formats were they legal? Were they ever playable in standard or extended?

When the book promos were released there weren’t any formats yet, there was just Magic.
