Liquid Fire

Silver Border Reasoning

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by rynosaur94 54 Comments

Looking at the decklists I noticed Super-Duper Death Ray is getting reprinted in the red deck. I always loved that card, but I wonder why it's silver border. It seems to me that it should work in black border, thought perhaps without the keyword, or maybe a different keyword.

Look at Liquid Fire from Odyssey. That was my first attempt to get this into black border.

Trample Mechanics Challenge

Some time ago, you mentioned that the rules can't support trample on sorceries and instants. Why not? How can it be worded so that sorceries/instants behave like they have trample?

Look at Liquid Fire. It gets ugly.

Spell Damage Mechanics

Isn't Arc Lightning a better example of the trample-like damage text in spells than Liquid Fire? (Granted, I know it's not exactly like trample, but it's close enough.) "Deal N damage divided between target creature and / or its controller" is much cleaner (I know the "or" is missing from Liquid Fire, probably accounting for the horrid, unintuitive, maybe unnecessary Oracle text).

There are plenty of ways to do it that are “kind of close”. The issue is we can’t do it exactly.

Trample-like Spells Complexity

Since Trample is spells doesn't work within the current rules, has a trample-like ability on spells been tried?

Yes, and the rules text is quite ugly. See Liquid Fire.

Standard Trample Spell

New 13 Dec 2017 Asked by macgyvercas-deactivated20171221 50 Comments

How likely is a card similar to Super-Duper Death Ray to appear in standard?

Not likely. The black border rules only let you put trample on a creature. Go look at the card Liquid Fire from Odyssey to see what happened when I tried to make a direct damage spell with trample.

Trample on Instants

I love that an instant in unstable has trample. What are the odds of that happening in black border?

Very small. It’s in silver border because it couldn’t be done in black border. I tried numerous times and ended up with things like Liquid Fire.

Trample Bolt Origins

isn't liquid fire from oddesey the card trample bolt... even though it is the confusing and un-elegant oracle text ever?

It was one of my attempts to make a trample bolt.

Trample Burn Spell

New 20 Jan 2013 Asked by chantryg 12 Comments

Why not just put Trample on a burn spell? The rules might need a tweak, but it'd be SUPER-grokable for anyone who knows what Trample does, and having access to it on burn spells could be interesting for Red!

I’ve tried to make a burn spell with trample for years. It never works out. See Liquid Fire from Odyssey for what I’m talking about. (That was the first direct dame spell with trample that I designed.)

Trample Mechanic for Damage

New 19 Nov 2012 Asked by mandramas 17 Comments

Could we print a trample-like mechanic for direct damage?

I’ve tried. Oh, how I’ve tried. Liquid Fire (from Odyssey) is about the closest I’ve seen to print which is not that close.
