Liliana of the Veil

R&D Secrecy Protocol

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by theindigosystem 9 Comments

How much is R&D allowed to lie? If I specifically asked, say, "is Liliana of the Veil being reprinted in Dominaria United" prior to the set's spoiler season, could you say no even though it's true? Or is *that* why you have you signature maybes?

That’s a big part of the maybes. I have to answer questions without using the knowledge I have, because I don’t want to give away the future.

Addressing Power Creep

New 23 May 2024 Asked by pallidpunkprincess 6 Comments

Re:Power CreepI think the root of the issue is that some long time players are sad that multiformat all-stars are being outclassed. Cards like Liliana of the Veil barely see standard play let alone modern or legacy or Tarmogoyf being so relatively weak that a commander making token copies of it feels like a silly novelty more than a terrifying threat. These cards that are very powerful in theory. They haven't been 1 to 1 outclassed but never the less are functionally not relavent in modern/legacy. This is a hard pill for many players to swallow when these cards were titans for nearly a decade.I think calling the argument of calling this shift power creep or not power creep is splitting hairs and maybe there needs to be some new terminology coined.

It’s the nature of a game that keeps releasing new content. There are formats like Old School (which only use cards from ‘93, '94, and '95) if you want to play with exclusively older cards.

Premier Set Reprints

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by tompixt 32 Comments

Hi Mark, I noticed how premier set have been getting high profile reprints at rare/mythic level such as Monastery Mentor, phyrexian Obliterator, Diabolical Intent, Liliana of the Veil etc., in addition to some interesting common/uncommon reprints. I would like to express that this form of reprinting cards is the most satisfying form I experience as it blends the elements of worldbuilding, nostalgia and card accessibility really well! Neither core sets nor master sets really did the trick for me. I hope this trend will continue?

Where it makes sense.

Not a play designer, but probably.

Collector Boosters Content

New 21 Jul 2019 Asked by kynelan-mdw 25 Comments

The new Collector Boosters for Throne of Eldraine will only feature cards from that set and not past borderless planeswalkers, such as Jace, The Mind Sculptor from the WAR Mythic Edition Boxes or extended art walkers, such as Liliana of the Veil from UMA box topper packs?

The only borderless planeswalkers will be of planeswalker cards from the set.

Alternate Art Possibility

New 08 Dec 2018 Asked by turtle4774 60 Comments

I want to put Liliana of the Veil in a deck, but I don't really love the art. Is there a chance that Liliana of the Veil will get reprinted with alternate art sometime down the line?

It’s a popular card that I assume we’ll see other reprints, so yes, there’s a chance.

Planeswalker Reprints

New 19 Oct 2018 Asked by ironchefravnica 27 Comments

Regarding planeswalker reprints in a standard legal set, Liliana of the Dark Realms was in both M13 and M14. Liliana Vess, from Lorwyn, has turned up in three core sets (including M15, sadly, pushing out a Liliana of the Veil reprint at some late stage of development). Is it really a question of planeswalkers being reprinted in standard legal sets other than core sets?

The question implied other than core sets because most core sets with a planeswalker in it have had repeated planeswalkers.

Planeswalker Reprints Possible

You make it sound like we will never ever see Liliana of the Veil in standard if there's no longer any PW reprints!? Bummer

I didn’t say planeswalker reprints can’t happen.

Card Fit Analysis

New 01 May 2016 Asked by abundantfrog 42 Comments

I want to say that thoughtseize is different from a card like snapcaster mage or liliana of the veil, because thoughtseize can fit in most any deck in its colors and be a great fit. Snapcaster mage needs a significant amount of low-cost instants/sorceries that are relevant at all points in the game. Or more deck-specific cards like scapeshift at rare without the utility lands to make the combo, or ad nauseum, or cards along that line.

If Snapcaster Mage was in Shadows over Innistrad it would warp Standard. It warps formats with a lot more cards available to play.

Tarmogoyf in Standard

New 08 Sep 2015 Asked by wiltedwill-deactivated20220827 23 Comments

Is Tarmogoyf too powerful to ever be in standard again like Force of Will, or is he powerful enough where he just needs a specific environment like Liliana of the Veil?

Not a developer but Tarmogiyf is too powerful for Standard.

No. That matches the feel of Liliana.

Planeswalker Reprints

New 24 May 2015 Asked by carloszero 36 Comments

With the discontinuation of Core Sets, I am very worried we will never ever see reprints of planeswalker cards in Standard-legal sets. Have we seen the last of Liliana of the Veil in Standard?

The last of planeswalker reprints in Standard? No. The last of Liliana of the Veil? Talk with development.

Standard Power Level

New 29 Dec 2014 Asked by thesumofallnoobs 11 Comments

"Development aims for a specific power level for Standard so by definition certain cards and effects are 'too strong for Standard'." Why is that true for cards that where once Standard valid, like Liliana of the Veil or Cryptic Command?

Two things. One, Standard power level has changed over the years and two, we print things that turn out stronger than we expect and thus cannot reprint them in Standard.

Since core sets are going away, what is the planeswalker reprints like Liliana of the Veil or Ajani Goldmane?

I think we’re exploring the idea of using reprinted planeswalkers in normal expansions when they make sense. Thoughts?

Standard Environment Design

New 31 Jul 2014 Asked by jwiley129 18 Comments

Is it fair to say that there exists a Standard environment where any card could be considered fair, but Development tries to keep the power level of Standard within a certain range that prevents certain cards from being printed in a given Standard (e.g. Liliana of the Veil) or not at all (e.g. Doubling Season)?

“Could exist” and “Would lead to a fun play environment” are very different things.
