Ken Nagle

Bant Design Team

New 16 May 2024 Asked by cooldude46290 17 Comments

On this, my most birthiest of days, I invoke the holy right of trivia! Specifically, about Bant (the mini-plane, not WUG).

The Bant mini-design team was led by Brian Tinsman and included Ken Nagle and myself. When Brian first pitched exalted, I was very skeptical. I said it seemed like too small a hoop to jump through. We playteested and it played great, so I went to Brian and said, “I was wrong. Exalted is great.” I think Bant was the first team to settle on its keyword.Happy Birthday!

Bant Trivia Fact

Invoking the ancient right of birthday trivia, can I ask for a fact about Bant? (The place or the colour combination)

The Bant mini team was led by Brian Tinsman and included Ken Nagle and myself. When Brian first pitched exalted, I didn’t like it as it felt like too small a hoop. We playtested it, and after that first playtest, I told Brian I was wrong. Exalted was a great mechanic. Happy Birthday!

Great Designer Search

New 08 Jul 2023 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

You’ve mentioned how GDS requires a lot of setup and infrastructure to do. I don’t really know very much about the last two, would you mind explaining what kinds of things went into it, and also what it was?

You could enter if you were 18 or older and capable of working in the U.S. To make it to each next step, you had to qualify.Step 1 - Answer 10 essay questions (3000 words total).Step 2 - Take a multiple choice test on Magic knowledge.Step 3 - Do a design test.Top 8 compete in a competition that resembles a reality show that tests a skill (think Project Runway or Top Chef). Each week there is a design challenge. Judges review all the entries and give public notes. The person doing the worst overall is eliminated. The top three get flown to Wizards for a day of interviews and other tests. The winner gets a 6 month internship in R&D. The top three of each of the three Great Designer Searches, as well as a few others, were eventually hired full time by Wizards (although not all in R&D).Top 3 Finalists:GDS1 Alexis Jansen - winnerKen Nagle - runner-upGraeme Hopkins - thirdGDS2 Ethan Fleischer - winner Shawn Main - runner-upScott Van Essen - thirdGDS3Ari Nieh - winner Jeremy Geist - runner-up Chris Mooney - third

Return to Ravnica Trivia

New 03 Jul 2023 Asked by gollumni 26 Comments

Dear Mark,I would like to invoke the rite of Birthday Trivia! (even if it was yesterday and I forgot) I’d love to know more about Return to Ravnica, as it was the set that I started playing magic in. Thank you I’m advance for your consideration

Return to Ravnica was the first large set where the design was led by Ken Nagle. I felt a return would be a good first opportunity, and moved things around, so Ken could lead it. This allowed me to do a winter set for the first time (Dark Ascension).Happy Birthday!

Lorwyn Noggles Trivia

New 30 Apr 2023 Asked by bartholious 66 Comments

How about some birthday trivia about the noggles of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor?

When making Eventide, the creative team needed creatures that made sense being enemy colors, so they turned to Celtic mythology. R&D liked to joke about Noggles because one of the designers was Ken Nagle. Happy Birthday!

Platinum Angel Origin

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by puggfuggly 41 Comments

In "Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto" you note Platinum Angel was created by the development team of Brandon Bozzi, Randy Buehler, Elaine Chase, Brian Schneider, Henry Stern, and Brian Tinsman. Then later on whenever you tell the story of its creation, you express regret that you can't remember who designed it. The Ken Nagle mixup might be because he designed a twist on it in Abyssal Persecutor.

I think platinum angel came out well before Ken Nagle joined Wizards, so it couldn’t have been him who designed it.

That is a good point.

Platinum Angel Creation

New 03 Aug 2022 Asked by su92 28 Comments

Do you remember who created Platinum Angel or how it was made?

We commissioned the art before we knew what it did. We loved the idea of an artifact Angel. I don’t remember who designed it. My best guess is Ken Nagle. EDIT: It couldn’t have been Ken Nagle as he didn’t work at Wizards yet.

Ken Nagle's Role in Mirrodin

Was Ken Nagle working on Magic when Mirrodin came out?

A fine point. He was not. It must have been a different designer.

Platinum Angel Card Trivia

New 19 Jun 2022 Asked by thelongcorgi 56 Comments

I forgot to ask on my birthday, so I hope you don’t mind giving me some late birthday trivia on my favorite card: platinum angel

Platinum Angel was commissioned as a piece of art long before we knew what it would do. We just knew we wanted a mechanical Angel. The art came back great, so we knew it needed a cool design. I think Ken Nagle came up with it. Happy Belated Birthday!

Omnath Lore and Development

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by thunder-jack 60 Comments

It is my birthday. May I ask, Can you give me some Omnath lore or behind the scenes stories or fun fact or something? He is my favorite character.

Ken Nagle designed the original Omnath as a cool one of. The second version added a color just to try and fit an open space in a cycle. Two points often make a line though, and the third version was just us having fun. The fourth version caused endless discussion about what the fourth color should be. Happy Birthday!

Trivia about Dark Ascension

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by havensglow-reblogs 90 Comments

Yesterday was my birthday! Can I get some trivia about my favorite set, Dark Ascension?

I’ve led forty something sets and the only small winter set I ever led was Dark Ascension. I did it because I want Ken Nagle to lead his first large set and a return to a known world (Ravnica) seemed like the right spot. My favorite design story from the set was I was trying to find a cool monster mechanic and was talking with my wife about it, venting my frustration. I really wanted to use persist because monsters have a whole trope of coming back after you think they’re dead, but the set used +1/+1 counters instead of -1/-1 counters. My wife said, “Why can’t you use +1/+1 counters?” And I’m like, “I can!” and undying was born.Happy Birthday!

Dinosaur Versus Hydra Iconics

New 05 Apr 2021 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 56 Comments

Recently in the Commander Theory Podcast, Ken Nagle stated that Dinosaurs are being experimented with to replace hydras as Greens Iconic race. How's the future fare for hydras?

I’m skeptical that experiment is going to work. I think Dinosaurs work better showing up at all rarities.

Holiday Cards Design

New 18 Dec 2020 Asked by gutturalcoprolalia 42 Comments

I just wanted to say, the Holiday cards are all marvelous designs, and I feel like most players always forget/don't know about them. Who designs them? I'd guess it's mostly you, because it's silver bordered.

I designed many of the early ones, but haven’t designed them in years. I believe Ken Nagle is currently in charge of them.

Hey, Mark! Today is my birthday! Could I please request that you share some trivia regarding the Praetors of New Phyrexia?

I designed the initial “help me and hurt the opponent regarding the same resource” cycle as just a Phyrexian thing. I think it was Ken Nagle that suggested it be used to represent the praetors.Happy Birthday!

Dryad Arbor Origin

New 08 Sep 2019 Asked by ben-craig-blog 36 Comments

Ken Nagle didn't design Dryad Arbor. He joined WoTC just before Future Sight was released. Ken _did_ design a card very similar to Dryad Arbor in GDS1 though. It was a 2/2/ forest that ETB tapped.

That’s right. He parallel designed it. Yeah, it was already in Future Sight when I saw his GDS1 design test.
