Howling Mine

Artifact Design Space

New 14 Jan 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 32 Comments

When/if: an artifact that "turns off" when it's tapped, like howling mine or winter orb? I know it's a holdover from old rules about continuous artifacts, but I wonder if there's any potential design space with it.

If. It’s not particularly fruitful design space.

Color Identity

New 26 Aug 2023 Asked by ravenjoybower 26 Comments

Hey Mark, I remember you saying recently that you couldn’t print an equivalent of Howling Mine as a white card. If you did make a card like that today (let’s say without the tapping clause), and it needed to be coloured for some reason, what colour/s would it be?

Blue.

White's Controlled Drawing

New 14 Aug 2023 Asked by j-waffles 32 Comments

You mentioned that white can get effects that draw over time, like dawn of a new age or four knocks. Does that mean white could get “at the beginning of your upkeep, draw a card”? Or does there need to be some other condition that controls how much drawing gets to happen?

We’ve chosen not to give white Howling Mine straight up. The numbers of draws are limited or you have a hoop each turn to jump through.

Howling Mine Color Debate

What color should Howling Mine be? Is it white now?

It’s blue. If white is getting a card every turn, it’s supposed to be jumping through some hoop.

Roil Coaster Explanation

New 20 Feb 2023 Asked by dullwitandravens 32 Comments

the oracle text (at least on gatherer) for various copies of the roller coster calls it the "roil coaster" in every flavour text eg "The Roil Coaster moves faster than the speed of sound." whereas it has different names for each version of the printed card eg "The howling mine moves faster than the speed of sound." I don't know if this is your domain but why is this?

The Roil Coaster is one of many roller coasters at the Astrotorium. It is the biggest.

White's Possible Howling Mine Effects

New 21 Mar 2022 Asked by delicateturtleangel 22 Comments

Hi Mark!Would white now be allowed a normal Howling Mine type effect? If I understand the new philosophy, it definitely could. Then, would it be allowed a pumped version where at each opponent's turn, you both draw a card? While it does seem to fit within the word of the law (max of 1 card per turn), it doesn't seem to fit the spirit of it, or maybe that's just me being too prude haha.

White’s mutual draw is only one-shot. It can’t get repeatable multiple draw. It’s too efficient in white weenie.

White's Card Drawing Style

New 14 Mar 2022 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 26 Comments

Could white get a card similar to howling mine/temple bell?

No, that style of design leads to gameplay we don’t want in white. White’s group draws are one-shot and not ongoing.

Draw Effect Discrepancies

"White doesn’t get Howling Mine." If white can get symmetrical draw like Secret Rendezvous, why not?

Repeatable and one-shot effects function very differently.

Card Flash Possibilities

Since white is getting access to flash, could white get Dictate of Kruphix?

White doesn’t get Howling Mine.

Barrier Criteria for White's Card Draw

New 16 Jun 2021 Asked by oldtumblehome 39 Comments

Is just straight Howling Mine too small of a barrier for White’s card draw?

Yes. White has to meet some criteria. It sets up a rule and if it can follow it, it can get a card once a turn. Doing nothing is too low a criteria.

Assigning Howling Mine to White

New 27 Jan 2021 Asked by shadowman2099 56 Comments

Would you be OK with giving Howling Mine to White? Blue usually does shared card draw, but it's not something Blue doesn't us it often anyway and sharing is way more White than Blue.

It’s being talked about.

White's Draw Card Abilities

New 07 Dec 2020 Asked by evscfa1 36 Comments

Would it be in white's color pie to cause every player to draw a card during each player's upkeep/draw step?

No, when we decided to let white get group draw, we put limits on it including drawing every turn a la Howling Mine. Remember, while we’re finding ways to let white draw, it’s still fifth at drawing.

Potential Howling Mine Colorshift

Chance of getting a Howling Mine or Howling Golem colorshifted to white?

We’ve been talking about whether or not it properly fits with everyone draw. It’s being discussed.

White's Draw Mechanic

New 09 Dec 2019 Asked by captainjackharness 23 Comments

Does Happily Ever After mean group hug everyone draw effects are in white's realm now, rather then blue? Like a white color shifted Vision Skeins? Or a white Artifact version of Howling Mine? Properly mana costed, of course, those are definitely not card advantage, especially in multi-player.

We’re trying out group draw in white, currently just one-shot effects.

Alternative Howling Mine Concept

New 15 Oct 2019 Asked by jonaskoebele 35 Comments

Regarding your time travel article. Would you do a two mana howling mine enchantment in blue to shy away from the original? Or would you not, as it is just a worse howling mine?

In my alternate world, Howling Mine would have just been a blue enchantment (with a different flavor). Being blue would make it different, not worse. You could discard it to cast Force of Will, for example.

Monowhite Drawing Mechanic

Could monowhite get a Howling Mine effect? The opponents drawing first seems to fit well with white's card drawing downside.

White doesn’t get repeatable “everyone draw”.

Artifacts vs. Enchantments

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by clarknes 40 Comments

So I am not particularly bothered by the colored artifacts being like enchantments, but why not feed into the tapped distinction? Accept that older artifacts like howling mine are grandfathered in, and now say artifacts can’t have static effects? Or maybe even just bring back the old mono artifact rule if you want to add static effects? Now seems like a good time to rehash the question you mentioned came up in Mirrodin.

If I couldn’t win the argument with inertia of ten years, I’m not winning it with the inertia of twenty-six years.

Artifact Enchantment Overlap

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by suigenyukiouji 73 Comments

The biggest mechanical distinction between artifacts and enchantments, now that colored artifacts are evergreen, is that artifacts can have tap abilities. Flavor alone doesn't satisfy us enchantment fans, as having colored artifacts without tap abilities just feels like you're eroding away enchantments' place in the game. Midnight Clock is ok because it taps, Embercleave is ok because it's an equipment, Glass Casket is not ok because there's no reason it couldn't be an enchantment instead.

That statement would carry more weight if Magic hadn’t been making artifacts with continuous effects for twenty-six years. Interestingly, back in original Mirrodin, Tyler Bielman and I made a bold proposal where we made a very firm delineation between what artifacts and enchantments could do, but it meant that we couldn’t ever reprint things like Howling Mine and R&D shot down the plan.Essentially, this is a fight I once tried to have, but I lost that fight sixteen years ago. The delineation that you seem to think exists, never really has, except in mana cost, and as I’ve explained, for the good of the game, Magic needs to adapt in this area.

Enchantment Niches

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by snescontroller 53 Comments

Glass Casket has me concerned. It feels like, ever since colored artifacts became an every-set thing, there just aren't that many mechanical niches for enchantments anymore. Artifacts get to also be creatures, cost generic mana, have tap abilities... the list goes on. The only thing enchantments can do that artifacts can't is attach to objects other than creatures you control.

Artifacts have had global effects since the game began back in Alpha (Ankh of Mishra, Black Lotus, Copper Tablet, Dingus Egg, Gauntlet of Might, Howling Mine, Kormus Bell, Meekstone, Sunglasses of Urza, and Winter Orb). The change is we’re allowing artifacts to have colored mana costs (and even this we’ve done for over ten years - just not at the current levels). This means the overlap between artifacts and enchantments, which has always been there, is a little more noticeable. The color pie is determined by the mana cost of the card, so if white can do something as an enchantment, it means it can do it as an artifact, The result of this is we have to lean a little more on the flavor to help make them feel different from one another.

Colored Artifacts Role

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by jimharbor 39 Comments

With colored artifacts being more common will you be making less of them that are functionally like global enchantments (Howling Mine, Panharmonicon) and if not, may I recommend you do? Thanks for answering put questions sir.

I don’t see a lot of advantage of limiting artifacts and enchantments. They represent very different things flavorfully, and allow us to make similar things that get to interact differently. Red can handle Glass Casket, but not Oblivion Ring.
