Black's Turn Steal

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by zombsidian 22 Comments

So, there are no Final Fortune effects for black, but could Black "Steal" another player's turn steps? Or perhaps treat an enemy's turn as their own?So, for instance, an enchantment that lets the Black player play creatures during an opponent's main phase, play sorceries, ect.Or are the rules for something like that noncompatable

Black does get control the other player for a turn. Although, we usually give that player another turn after where they’re back in control.

Can black not get final fortune because of the color pie or due to design concerns with the effect?

Color pie, for sure. Play balance, possibly.

Color Shift Limits

Could red get a color-shifted Ancestral Recall with the proviso "At the end of the turn, you lose the game"?

Unlikely. Losing the game at end of turn, doesn’t turn effects red. (Yes, I’m aware Final Fortune exists.)

Turn Punishment in Red

New 10 Oct 2021 Asked by moonfolklore 46 Comments

Can red cause opponents who take an extra turn to lose the game? Like a punisher variant of Final Fortune.

It’s more likely it would prevent extra turns. I think that’s more white than red though.

Final Fortune Spell Trivia

New 31 May 2020 Asked by kalo-shin-blog 32 Comments

Hey Mark, my birthday was two days ago so I was hoping maybe I could get some trivia on my favorite spell, Final Fortune? (The red extra turn spell.). Thanks for reading!

The development team spent a lot of time talking about that card. Was it red? But we ended up saying yes, because they way it played out was so different and the “win next turn or lose” element felt red.Happy Belated Birthday!

Are effects like Final Fortune that give a cheap, substantial effect at the cost of losing during your end step still in Red's slice of the color pie?

Not really.

Red Time Manipulation

New 15 Mar 2015 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 23 Comments

Red has three cards that give them an extra turn, does that not count as messing with time?

Blue gets extra turns, it’s Time Walk and Time Warp. Red does and it’s Final Fortune or Last Chance so no I don’t think Red is flavored as using time manipulation.

I think so. It’s pretty “act now, damn the future consequences”.

Bending vs Breaking

New 02 Jan 2015 Asked by longtimegonemtgo 45 Comments

You've posted recently about how you are fine with bending the color pie, but are adamantly against breaking it. Can you explain the difference between bending and breaking here? How do you draw that line?

Bending the color pie is where you let a color do something it normally doesn’t but it’s not deviating too far from what the color can normally do. Red doesn’t normally get Time Walk but we allowed it Final Fortune because it does get things like Relentless Assault and it is a nice red twist to the ability. The key to color bleeding is it still stays true to the general essence of what colors can do pushing in a place that doesn’t cause long term problems. Color breaking is when you let a color do something it’s not supposed to do. You are filling in a color’s weakness or defining it in such a way that it contradicts something key about the color. Every block does color bending because Magic is always changing its focus and we want all the colors to play in the area that the block is about. For instance, Rescue from the Underworld was key to capturing the feel of Theros. It isn’t exactly how black normally functions but the essence of what it was doing was elements black can do and the overall feel was very black. Hornet Sting, in contrast, gave an ability to green (direct damage to creatures) that green is supposed to be poor at. It didn’t add much to the set it came in and was mostly only flavorful unto itself. Even though it was low powered in contrast to other colors, it still ended up getting played in tournament sideboards because it filled in a weakness Green had and kept players from having to go to another color.

Red's Extra Turns

New 08 May 2014 Asked by tnessfftto 28 Comments

Can I revive the old idea that's been floated on this blog a bunch of times about red getting "temporary" extra turns (you skip your next regular turn or you lose the game if you don't manage to win with your extra turn)?

Red had this spell in Mirage. It was called Final Fortune. We’ve talked about bringing back Final Fortune for red but so far we haven’t chosen to do it.

Are Final Fortune/Last Chance/Warrior's Oath cards that give you an extra turn but make you lose at the end of that turn still in Red's color pie?

Yes, that’s still in red’s color pie as it fits red’s “act now without thinking of the repercussions of your actions” philosophy.

Where do you stand on Red's "go-for-broke" and how it takes an extra turn but would lose after? Example: Final Fortune; Last Chance; Warrior's Oath

How do you feel about cards like Last Chance (i.e.: Red taking an extra "go for broke" turn)?

I liked it better as Final Fortune, but yes I’m fine with cards like this. It feels very red to me.
