Tarmagoyf Token Art Update Status

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 1 Comments

With Tarmagoyf tokens having the casting cost like the card, are existing tokens that are exact copies of a real card (Meteorite, Festering Goblin) likely to get the same treatment?

I don’t know of any planned errata.

Understanding Zombie Race-Class

New 13 Jun 2022 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 44 Comments

"Zombie is sometimes a race, sometimes a class. It depends what other creature types are on the card."I am actually glad this was brought up, as it is my biggest pet peeve about creature-typing. Why are humans the only race that can't synergize with their undead counterparts? It doesn't mechanically or flavorfully make sense that Discordant Piper, Dread Wanderer, or Festering Goblin would owe any allegiance to their respective races; isn't the point of a zombie that it loses what it once was?And if mechanics are the sole reason, then again, why are Humans the only race omitted? Human tribal is really only a problem in Modern and Legacy, so bannings can easily be made if there would truly be an issue.Just not sure what the justification is for this dissonant articulation of Zombies.

Humans are already so over-represented, we thought it was a spot we could let other creature types shine.

Zombie Typeline Consistency

Why is it that a human zombie is just a zombie while a zombie goblin is still a goblin (Festering goblin)? We have zombie crocodiles, elves, goblins, merfolk etc but zombie humans are just 'zombies'.

It’s anti-Human prejudice.

Gatherer Misunderstanding

New 02 May 2017 Asked by latsblaster 32 Comments

Read your article (as usual). What is wrong with your gatherer? "We already had to change the card, as it was a Goblin and we were looking for a Zombie". Festering Goblin is a zombie (and an old favorite)!!!

I meant just a Zombie. Goblins aren’t on Amonkhet.

Human Default Race

Why are Humans the default race for Spirits, Zombies, etc.? As in Walking Corpse is just a Zombie, but Festering Goblin is a Zombie Goblin.

Probably because Humans are the default players. : )

One-Drops Birthday Trivia

New 16 Mar 2016 Asked by gedgaroo 23 Comments

After years of following your blog, I finally have a Birthday Trivia. I love one drops that take another creature with them when they die. Any trivia on Festering Goblin, Typhoid Rats, Goblin Arsonist, or their ilk?

There was a lot of debate when we made Festering Goblin whether it was supposed to be a Goblin. At the time, there was only one monoBlack Goblin and we didn’t know whether we wanted another. We ended up keeping it because we liked the flavor. Then in Lorwyn, Black Goblins were a thing so we made a whole bunch. Happy Birthday!

Shambling Goblin Reasoning

Shambling Goblin, Maro? Couldn't you just have reprinted Festering Goblin? Good lenticular design, plus it has the same creature types!

The template was changed to restrict the effect to only going on your opponent’s creatures. It avoids bad misclicks on Magic Online.

Goblin Trivia

It's my birthday! Could I get some trivia on my favorite card, Festering Goblin?

I believe that is the first every black goblin. We would later do a bunch more in Lorwyn block. Happy birthday!
