Desperate Ravings

Narset Character Trivia

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by aork14 39 Comments

Hello Mark! For my birthday, I was wondering if you had any cool trivia about my favorite color combination (Jeskai), my favorite character (Narset), or my favorite card (Desperate Ravings)

Narset came about because we liked the idea of a character that in one timeline was a legendary creature of great renown, and in the other, a planeswalker. Happy Birthday!

Desperate Ravings Design

Ohgawd, I just realized a cool thing about Desperate Ravings. When you first cast it, you get no card Advantage which makes sense for red. BUT when you flashback it for BLUE mana, you get an extra card! Do you think that's brilliant design?

There are no coincidences. : )

Red Looting Inspiration

Was Desperate Ravings inspired by the "move looting into red" that was a popular answer to one of the GDS2 essay questions? Not that it was never printed in red before, but might we see more of this in the future?

You will see more “looting” in red. The idea came up during the GDS2. R&D liked the idea and we figured out how best to use it in red.

Random Card Selection

What method do you recommend to pick a card at random (e.g., to discard to Desperate Ravings, or to retrieve with Make a Wish) when you don't have a dice?

Unless you are playing in a format with cards that care about graveyard order (Tempest block or earlier), you are allowed to shuffle your graveyard to draw a random card. If you are playing legacy or vintage, I would recommend a die. If you have an iPhone, my favorite dice rolling app is Mach Dice which lets you roll dice of any size regardless of actual physics.
