Mistakes in Removal Balance

New 12 May 2018 Asked by necrofamicom 59 Comments

“White is not supposed to be better than black at creature destruction,” Says who? Swords to Plowshares was an Uncommon in Limited Edition and Ice Age while Terror was downgraded to Dark Banishing at the same time. It seems like White should have equal or better removal than Black, and the color pie doesn’t fall apart if that’s true.

Swords to Plowshares is considered to be a huge mistake because white eclipsed black as the creature killing color and that wasn’t the intent.

Rules Versus Design

New 25 Oct 2017 Asked by gabecampos89 27 Comments

I think the underlying issue on commander is that you're looking at the vantage point of a designer, while some of us are looking at it through rules point of view. Is Sygg, River Cutthroat targetable for Dark Banishing? No, he is black. Can Red Elemental Blast counter it? Yes, it is blue.

Of course I’m looking it as a designer. Magic is many games connected by a unified set of rules. When one version works differently than all the other versions it increases confusion and makes it harder to transition between formats.

Regeneration's Future

Does the removal of regeneration as a modern mechanic mean we won't see reprints of Terror/Dark Banishing again?

Not in Standard legal sets.

Dromar Trivia

New 03 Dec 2015 Asked by konfusingkobold 22 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday today, could I get some trivia on my favorite card, "Dromar, the Banisher"?

We had a big fight about Dromar’s name because “Banishing” (due to the card Dark Banishing) was slang for killing and the card didn’t directly kill anything. Happy Birthday!

Art Style Evolution

New 10 Mar 2013 Asked by ghostdaddotcx 19 Comments

As a kid I loved the watercolor art by Drew Tucker on lots of old cards like Dark Banishing, Necrite, Leshrac's Sigil, etc. Over time, Magic's art has grown a lot more heavily curated and we don't get the cool outside-the-box stuff like this as much. What are the chances we ever get some of that back?

Magic has chosen to take a path where the art has a more overall cohesive feel. This helps us create sets and blocks that have a stronger visceral feel and give the sense that they all are happening in a unified world. I too loved Drew Tucker but I think this sacrifice is for the overall greater good of the artistic quality of Magic.

Core Set Flavor Text

New 22 Jan 2013 Asked by chick3nfist 10 Comments

Please tell the relevant people that i very strongly feel that core set flavor text should have more literary quotes. It gives Magic a sense of sophistication and intelligence. Shakespeare on Dark Banishing was what caught my eye and brought me into mtg 6 years ago...

We’ve done some research on this topic and the majority of people actually enjoy in world Magic flavor text over real world quotes. We still do some real world quotes in the Core Set for players like yourself but I doubt we’re going up much in percentages any time soon.

Banisher Terminology

New 26 Aug 2012 Asked by puggfuggly 7 Comments

You say you wouldn't have named a creature that unsummons other creatures "Banisher." I think you forget that, since Dark Banishing back in Ice Age, a host of cards have used "banish" with the flavor of either bouncing or putting the creature back into the library. Examples of bouncing include Banishing Knack and Surrakar Banisher.

Three wrongs don’t make a right.

'Banish' in Magic

New 26 Mar 2012 Asked by solarthebanisher-deactivated201 3 Comments

Why is "banish" forever tainted in magic?

“Banish” has become Magic slang in some circles to mean “a black kill spell” because of the card Dark Banishing.
